Home description
Enter a world of Regency splendour through the formal parterre and stately front door into the elegant Entrance Hall with fabulous views of Bath from the fine Drawing Room with its Steinway grand-piano and the candle-lit Dining Room, magnificently furnished with an even grander mahogany pedestal-table for 14 guests.
There is a private walled garden with panoramic views of Bath – where you can sit, relax, drink, dine and BBQ, beneath the vast colonial canopy on the wide stone terrace, reached from the convivial Breakfast Room. The expansive contemporary Kitchen has an Aga among all usual mod-cons and across the hall is the sunny Day Room with music, television and books to entertain.
This majestic townhouse is one of Bath's very few detached properties - most being terraced or in crescents - and has been carefully and meticulously restored and tastefully decorated with distinctive English and European furniture and lighting to reflect the lifestyle of the first and original occupant in 1817, a Mrs Emma Goodhart.
With three magnificent reception rooms among the 20 or so rooms in total, Emma Goodhart's is a grand home and perfect venue for large parties, yet offering peace, elegance and tranquillity.

The West Country / Somerset region
From Emma Goodhart's Townhouse there is a really exciting choice of day-trips you can make easily by car and several of these places by train also, including London Paddington.
In under 1 hour by car visit any of:- - the village of Tetbury and the Prince of Wales' new Highgrove shop; - the Mulberry Factory Shop at Shepton Mallet; - the mystical town of Glastonbury and its summertime classical extravaganza concerts - Westonbirt Aboretum and home to Jools Holland's July boogie-woodie concerts among others - England's smallest City of Wells and its Cathedral; - Bristol's Suspension Bridge and SS Great Britten in Bristol Docks; - the lions at Longleat; - Salisbury Cathedral and Stonehenge en route; - Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole Caves, Badminton (for the Horse Trials).
In the more imediate vacinity of Bath is NT Dyrhram Park - film set for 'Remains of the Day'.
Closer still, with views from the Townhouse, is the newly opened NT Prior Park looking up to the very mansion house which inspired the building of this famous Bath spa-town in the 1750's.
Bath / Central Bath area
Emma Goodhart was the lady recorded in 1817 as having built this imposing townhouse - one of the very few detached houses in Bath - just around the time of the Napoleonic Wars.
By then it had become fashionable to live just a short stone's throw away from the city centre and its early Georgian aristrocratic debauchery and to enjoy the clean living in the fresher air, and not surprisingly this is still so.
Today in Bath you can be transported back to Emma Goodhart's days at the brilliant No 1 Royal Crescent Museum house, and nearby visit the Fashion Museum for more on the dress code of the day as well as read all about it at the delightful Jane Austin centre.
Nearby there is the charming Margaret's Buildings between the Royal Crescent and Circus where Bath's fashion-bag deigner Liz Cox has her shop alongside other fine boutiques in what was Bath's West End
The Building of Bath museum is one for everyone with details on fabrics and home decor of the day as well as how cleverly they built and decorated these imposing townhouses.
There's a fabulous annual Music Festival (May/June) and the famous Bath Christmas Market (late Nov) plus the appetite-whetting Taste of Bath, Bath's Young Musician of the Year, the Bath Flower Show.
And many of the West End's best plays and actors appear throughout the year at the adorable and very accessible Theatre Royal - you will be pressed to pick a visit to Bath where nothing is going on!
From home at the foot of Lyncombe Hill, the wide open canal path boasts a charming walk right up to Pultney Bridge in the very heart of Bath and all the veritable attractions of city today - with magificent sights along the way from Bath Abbey (past the famous Bath Rugby ground) to the weir.
Various boat rides are on offer along the way and day-canal boats can be hired to run up the Avon Canal to Bathampton or as far as Bradford on Avon for the adventurous.
Whether on foot, by taxi or car (there are horse drawn taxi carriages available too) the whole of Bath is accessible from this charming and elegant location - a walk from the townhouse to the far West End of Bath will take no more than 20 minutes and earn you afternoon-cream-tea at the Royal Crescent for example - this really is a small city you can get around easily (and a taxi will get you there for £5 in under ten minutes if you're trying to pack it all in).
Closer still and not without mention is the newly opened Bath Thermae Spa, but a 10 minute walk from Lyncombe Hill.
How to get there
This is a very accessible place on the lower foothills of Bath, to the southern side of the city, just up Lyncombe Hill, one of Bath's most sought after residential roads becuase of it's proximity to the town centre - a 6 minute walk down over the footbridge where the Avon canal meets the River Avon and through the arches at Bath Spa station (allow a 9 minute back up).
Enjoy spectacular rural views and delightful gardens yet be in Bath City. The natural road around Bath brings you through the charming little Widcombe village with all its eateries and deli pantry to the turning into Lyncombe Hill and 250 metres up are the high black railings to the imposing double-fronted Emma Goodhart's No 45 Townhouse.
Thrifty car rental at Bath Spa station is a deal-maker on many wheels from Jags to jallopies and Bristol Airport is a gentle 40 minutes by taxi. Driving from Heathrow airport is a 90-minute direct and easily navigable journey. Central London is a 2 hour drive straight up the M4 into Knightsbridge; Or a more civilised 90 minute train journey on the Inter-City express which serves Paddington every half hour.

Further details indoors: Across the four floors 8-12 guests will enjoy a comfortable and unforgettable stay in the 6 spacious and well-appointed bedrooms - 4 doubles and 2 twins - each elegantly furnished with antique furniture and beautiful chandeliers - but not to be swung from please – and you can choose from any of the 4 bathrooms.
There is additional space for up to 14 guests, with use of the prestige king-size sofa-bed quietly tucked away in its own corner room adjacent one of the large bathrooms. And with Bath on the 18c door-step you can use the driveway to park up to 3 cars and walk easily to the historic town centre, Thermae Spa, and amazing choice of shops and fine eateries.
The craftsmen’s skills of the late 18c have been professionally conserved and are visible in the wealth of elegant cornice decoration, woodwork panelling, window shutters, metal and stone work throughout the inside and outside of this stylish private home.
History apart, the hallmark of an enjoyable break at Emma Goodhart’s is sleeping soundly and bathing in home-from-home comfort. You will find best-quality beds with pocket-spring mattresses dressed in crisp white cotton bed linen – professionally laundered. And you can indulge in steaming hot showers in the 3 spacious bathrooms each with grand showers and 1 further en-suite shower-room, each luxuriously finished with contemporary fixtures and fittings, and supplied with an abundance of fluffy white bath towels.
All other services and facilities are as you would expect included – and the kitchen and house is equipped with all the utensils and amenities you would normally expect. The scullery offers washing machines and a spin dryer and the key is available on request.
This is a no-smoking property and for everyone’s protection the house is wired with heat and smoke detectors.
Further details outdoors: Within the safety of the walled garden, there are sweeping lawns, hidden pathways and stone steps down to the fruit trees, lower terraces and a high-quality trampoline.
For those less energetic moments, the large designer-canopy provides outdoor dining and under-cover seating for 14, with a nearby barbecue and chiminea to warm any evening chill. This is the perfect place to enjoy a quiet breakfast-coffee on a sunny morning and a place to sit over tea, as delightful as it gets, or a pre-prandial to long convivial evenings when the weather is favourable.
Parking is eased with space for 2/3 cars in the drive-way and the area is quiet and residential without being suburban - this is Bath City after all! Once parked you do not need your car(s) to get around Bath - it is all within comfortable walking distance.
There are very local shops for last minutes necessities but also fine gifts, great clothing as well as deli comestibles and a choice of some of the best eateries on offer in Bath at the moment. They say that Widcombe is the fashionable place to be seen!
Reassuringly there is a good pharmacy and a multi practice surgery on hand too, just in case.
Further details
In keeping with the welcoming warmth of this magnificent Townhouse, you will be greeted with a complimentary welcome hamper of cold wine in the fridge, red wine on the table, fresh milk and a selection of teas and coffee to ensure you are revived on arrival and set to celebrate a great stay at Emma Goodhart's Townhouse.
The flat and welcoming entrance to the ground floor of this 4-storey house situated on Lyncombe Hill cannot conceal the number of internal stairs and outside steps and slopes needed to enjoy the house to its full.
Indeed, many older guests have much enjoyed being in the house although regretfully there is little we can do to make it truely accesible to the infirm or less abled against our best wishes.
