The West Country region

The West Country has a myriad of amazing places to see and discover. The cathedrals and abbeys of Salisbury, Wells and Bath together with the ancient monuments at Stonehenge, the caves of Wookey Hole and Cheddar.

Wiltshire and Somerset are two of the most interesting and diverse counties, rich in architectural history and famed for Cheese and cider production - the whole area boasts the widest selection of top quality farm shops, many of whom supply the restaurants and pubs in the region.

From farm shops to galleries, plus artisan and farmers markets, there is plenty to inspire you. The individual shops in Bradford on Avon will delight you.

The National Trust and English Heritage have a wide selection of houses, gardens and villages in the area - Lacock is an example of a village frozen in time and scene of many films including Harry Potter.

Castle Combe (scene of the recent War Horse film) is another quintessential English village and well worth a visit.

There are many farm shops in the locality, many of which also have great cafes for a good lunch or coffee. Local produce includes cider, cheese and strawberries with cattle and dairy farming being prolific in the area.

The Bath area is a great base from which to explore the Cotswolds and a day trip to London is made very feasible as there is a direct line from Bradford on Avon to London Waterloo (2 hours).

Bath

You can enjoy some wonderful walks in Bradford on Avon - along the canal or river and there is also a town walk which takes in the stunning views.

Bath is, without doubt, a most incredible city, which was enjoyed by the Romans and also the Georgians. Today, visitors come from around the world to marvel at the beautiful architecture made up of the Roman remnants and Georgian crescents and terraces.

There are museums and art galleries and the diversity of eateries will cater for most tastes.

To mis-quote Samuel Johnson "if a man is tired of Bradford on Avon, he is tired of life......" .Bradford on Avon is a pure gem and canal walks, canoe and bike hire plus the picturesque and quirky town with many locally renowned pubs and restaurants (from Thai to traditional tea rooms and everything in between!) will make you want to return.

"A beautiful cottage, comfortably & tastefully furnished to suit all needs."

Anyone looking for a beautifully furnished cottage with views over Bradford on Avon, in a lovely part of the UK, should look no further. John & Jan Bird really do have the magic touch for having made our stay a very memorable one. The cottage was fully equipped for day to day living but nearby Pubs and Restaurants, reasonably priced, were in a abundance. The cottage is ideally located to allow visits to the many attractions this area has to offer. There is an excellent train and bus service just a short distance from the cottage for this not wishing to use a car.

Your review is very much appreciated and it was a pleasure to have you to stay at Woolley Cottage. Bradford is a very special place and I am pleased you enjoyed your visit. Best wishes, Jan

"Perfect period cottage in picturesque location"

We had an extended stay in Woolley Cottage between September and December and could not have been happier. Jan and John are the perfect hosts and went out of their way to make us welcome throughout our stay. The cottage is very well appointed and tastefully furnished, it felt like home from home. The views from both bedrooms are amazing and the amenities of Bradford on Avon are only a short walk away. We would definitely return and recommend the cottage to both friends and family.

Your review is much appreciated and it was a genuine pleasure to have you as guests at Woolley Cottage. I hope to welcome you back again very soon but good luck with your travels in the meantime! With very best wishes, Jan

"A dream cottage"

Everything you dream a country cottage should be! Very pretty with amazing views, beautifully maintained and very, very comfortable. All the rooms were luxurious and in perfect condition. A small but delightful front garden to sit in and relax while sipping the cooled wine thoughtfully provided by the owner.

Thank you so much for your lovely review of Woolley Cottage and I am delighted you enjoyed your stay. I hope you will come and stay again when you are next in the area - you would be very welcome! Best wishes, Jan

"Delightful Cottage"

Delightful and charming cottage. We felt at home as soon as we walked through the door and much appreciated all the little extras Jan had left for us. Especially the chilled wine which we enjoyed sitting in the sunny garden.
With four adults in our party one of whom is 6ft 6ins tall we were very pleased how spacious and light the cottage felt.
We hope to return again soon.

Thank you so much for your kind review and I am very pleased you enjoyed your stay. I look forward to welcoming you back to Woolley Cottage! Best wishes, Jan

"Lovely little cottage and really helpful owner"

In March 2012 we stayed in Jan's Kemble Cottage, and we have really fond memories of our visit. But I have to say, we liked Woolley Cottage even better. As other reviewers have noted, Jan pays immense attention to detail. Everything is clean and beautifully presented - yet luckily for us Jan was happy for us to visit with our two and a half year old, and even left a little packet of chocolate buttons for him!
Jan is always efficient, highly professional and eager to please. Before I realised she had Woolley Cottage I checked Kemble but it was booked during the week we wanted. So I approached three other owners in the area, and none of them responded to me. I then contacted Jan to say 'Please let us know if you get any cancellations'. She got back to me immediately and offered us Woolley Cottage.

I'm so glad she did, as it is such a sweet, characterful place to stay. The things I loved best were the view from the top bedroom, and the delightful little garden. The beds are also worthy of mention - so comfy!

During our visit the temperature reached 29 degrees, and after a few sleepless nights I was thinking of going to buy a fan, when Jan rang to offer us two. She also rang to see how our little boy was as he had heat exhaustion, and again at the end of our visit to make sure that everything had been okay. We all felt quite sad to leave, and will definitely book again if we come back to Bradford on Avon.

Your review has truly made my day! My main focus, always, is to ensure your stay will be one you will want to repeat and I enjoy it when guests really feel at home and are able to relax - that is what holidays are all about! It would be a pleasure to welcome you back and thank you very much for your review. Best wishes, Jan

Thank you for your review of Woolley Cottage and I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay. You are quite right to mention the second staircase, which, as we point out on our listing, is fairly steep. Naturally, we would advise those less mobile to discuss this before booking the cottage. Enjoy the rest of the summer and thank you for choosing to stay at Woolley Cottage! Best wishes, Jan

"Charming cottage in a beautiful location, but not for the big and tall!"

My daughter and I loved our stay at Woolley Cottage. The location is convenient, the cottage is furnished tastefully, and there is lots of parking nearby. The owner was very professional and helpful. However, my husband and father-in-law (who are both over 5'10") felt a bit like wizards in a hobbit house and never quite felt comfortable. Highly recommended for petit travelers!

Thank you so much for your review, which is very much appreciated. I totally agree that the two areas of low height (namely the front door and the door leading into the kitchen) are a little lower than one would normally expect. Although we cannot change it, as these are just quirks of the character of this very old cottage, I will certainly make that clear on our listings. I know everything here in England is on a much smaller scale than in the US - and the population were not so tall here 200 years ago! Thank you again and I send you my very best wishes, Jan
