The West Country region

This extraordinarily beautiful region of wooded hills and river meadows has a long history. The mighty footprints of the Romans were subsequently trodden by Saxon yeomen, and eventually the region became important during the Industrial Revolution and afterwards for the weaving of woollen fabrics. Many traces of these activities remain in the architecture of the countryside.

Bath

The local town of Bradford-on-Avon (45 minutes walk along the canal tow-path, or a short train ride) offers a snapshot of a stone-built mill town, with lovely architecture and many tourist attractions from a 14th century tithe barn to a Saxon church. The city of Bath has a really huge number of restaurants, museums, activities and shops as well as many festivals and an astonishing wealth of history, all packed into this small quintessentially Georgian World Heritage city. You couldn't find a nicer or more interesting place to spend quality holiday time.

"Lovely place for a weekend away"

Five old schoolfriends stayed here for a girls weekend. House is immaculate with everything we needed. Situated in a very quiet village with excellent train connections to Bath (10 mins away) Bristol, Cardiff and Portsmouth. Good size bedrooms with very comfortable beds. Small but well equipped kitchen. Free wifi and landline much appreciated as mobile phone network in the village is patchy. We wished we could have stayed longer. Highly recommended as a base for a stay in Bath or the lovely Somerset and Wiltshire countryside.

The tiny train to Bath is an idyllic way of getting to the city centre in less than ten minutes. It is an outstandingly beautiful valley that the train travels through. In fact it is quicker to get to Bath City Centre from here is quicker than most places in Batch, unless you are staying right in the noisy middle. It is also much quicker to get to the University of Bath via Brass Knocker Hill, mainly because it avoids all the traffic.
You will be very welcome to stay again.

"Excellent accomodation, great village"

The Old Stables was really well furnished. It had every thing you could need. Everything was in excellent condition and there was loads of space. It was a great village, very pretty with lots of opportunities for walking. The local pub was excellent and very welcoming. The Community shop, though a little pricy, had a great range of food and everyone here and in the village was extremely friendly and helpful. Great access to Bath and surrounding areas. Good public transport too

Thank you for this lovely review.
The Community shop is quite expensive but it is good to know that any profits are spent on good causes in the community.

"Great place and location"

My husband and I, our 19yo son and 12yo daughter stayed here for 4 nights. The cottage was perfect for the 4 of us as we needed three bedrooms. The proximity to the local train station was great and it is only a 9 minute train trip to Bath. The Freshford Inn is as good as everyone says it is, great meals and friendly service. Would recommend the cottage to any family.

Our guests are often surprised how easy it is to get into Bath. Much easier than if you were staying just outside and had the hassle of finding parking. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay.

"Excellent, comfortable and well equipped accommodation, an ideal base from which to explore Bath and surrounding areas."

The accommodation was easy to book and lived upto all expecations in the information given. It is located in a very pretty and quiet village, within easy walking distance to the local station where it is easy to get trains into Bath and to the surrounding area. If you want a few days of no driving but still exploring the area, this accommodation is ideal.
The Old Stables are homely, clean, comfortable and well equipped and have a relaxing feel to them. Beds are very comfortable. We all said that we could live there just as the accommodation is.
We had 5 adults in our group and found that we had plenty of space. The layout would not allow but it would be really good to have two bathrooms as 5 people getting showered and ready for a wedding on the Saturday did need a bit of regimental planning and time limiting!!
All in all the Old Stables accommodation helped to make our weekend in Bath very enjoyable, we certainly recommend it, and would return next time we visit Bath or the surrounding area.

Thank you for a lovely review. You make a good point with the train service to Bath or Bristol. There is also a good bus service. You can explore the area and have a break from the car. See you soon.

"A peaceful location with lovely scenery and the ability to leave the car behind and travel on the local train."

A lovely cottage which was exremely comfortable and provided everything required and situated in a very quiet location. Although there was no garden 2 seats with a small table were available to sit outside the patio doors in the courtyard. The railway station which was a 5 minute walk away was ideal for getting into the centre of Bath and to Bradford-on-Avon. The local village shop provided good quality food and all we required for our week's stay. We were lucky with the weather and had a warm sunny week, perhaps on darker days the lights would need to be on in the cottage all the time.

Bradford-on-Avon is a really interesting tow to visit. It has a long history and many interesting buildings, some dating from Roman times. The are also several well preserved Saxon buildings that are well worth a visit.

"Lovely house, town, pub and walks"

We loved the old, stone terraced house - big rooms, plenty of space and well equipped. The owners were very friendly and accommodating (bringing a jug of milk when I asked for some for a cuppa). The pub at the bottom of the hill was great, and the walks around the town and countryside were lovely (all helped by glorious weather). The parking is tight but you have your own space. The whole family had a great time!

It is one of my favourite pubs. It has a great atmosphere, good pub food and live music at least once a week.

"Very tranquil"

We stayed for 4 nights in Easter school hols. We went to Cheddar Gorge ( just under an hour), Longleat (25 mins) and Bath, both by train and car.WORD OF WARNING RE TRAIN!! When we caught the train bac… More

I hadn't realized how short the platform is. That is really worth knowing, specially if you are on the last train of the night.
We invested in a quality mattress and it seems to have been a good investment. A good nights sleep is a big part of a successful holiday I always think.
Hope you will be staying with us again soon.
