The West Country region

This is an entire region of fascinating depth and historical context. The area has varied geography including river valleys and rolling hills. The history of human habitation is long but expanded massively during Roman times, and played significant roles in the Saxon era and English civil war. Industry developed from a largely agricultural basis to include coal mining with the coming of canals and railways. Bath itself developed as a spa resort in Georgian times and remains a major cultural tourism centre having gained World Heritage City status.

Batheaston was named Estone in the Domesday Book and is overlooked by Solsbury Hill which is within the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and was an Iron Age hill fort occupied between 300 BC and 100 BC. It is also linked to Bathampton on the south bank of the river via a toll bridge. Near the river crossing is the site of a Roman villa. Elsewhere in secluded St Catherine's valley is the Tudor manor house, St Catherine's Court.

There are many places to visit including tithe barns, ancient churches, pristine villages and the Cotswold Way. The West Country features not only the amazing city of Bath, but Stonehenge, Avebury, Salisbury and Glastonbury. Longleat Safari Park and many National Trust country houses are less than one hour by car.

Bath

You will be just minutes from The Royal Crescent, The Circus and the recently opened Thermae Bath Spa and Roman Baths. You will be a few minutes from The Theatre Royal, Abbey Square and some world class restaurants, famous pubs and clubs. Well placed to enjoy music festivals, quality free pub music, film festival, art galleries, Literary Festival, rugby, the Christmas market and many museums.

Batheaston is a small historic village on the edge of the Cotswolds and St. Catherine's Valley, a few minutes from Bath City Centre. Access by car or bus takes a few minutes and it takes about 40 minutes to walk to Bath along the canal tow path. Within a short walk from the cottage there are several good local pubs and restaurants, a small supermarket, chemist, fish and chip shop and hairdressers. Click here for more on Batheaston.

"Loved the area, I would have no hesitation in staying in The Batch again"

Ideally located for trips to Bath, Bristol and the surrounding countryside. Property great for two or a small family, not to good for people who would struggle with stairs. Car parking is an issue, n… More

Actually there are no restrictions for parking except the small area opposite. Even this is unrestricted at weekends. Normally there is plenty of free parking but I think it was difficult when you were here because of the rugby, university open day and the bike Tour of Britain all happening at the same time.
I am glad you enjoyed your stay and I hope we will see you again soon.

"Brilliant cottage, great location!"

We stayed here for a week. The cottage was exactly what we had hopped for, beautifully presented, fully equipped. The location is perfect, whether to go to Bath or to explore other local tows/country side. A 10 mins walk takes you to a very good pub by the tool bridge (The Bathampton Mill - normal pub prices but delicious food!)

Glad you discovered Bathampton Mill. Actually there are several pubs within walking distance and at least three serve good food.
Thanks for the review and I hope we will see you again soon.

"Lovely, quiet, comfortable apartment!"

This is the best apartment I have ever stayed! Paul is the renter and he replies email quickly. The apartment provides everything you need. Although it is in Batheaston, the bus stop to Bath city cent… More

Thank you for your review.
The bus really does work. You can have the best of both worlds, out of the hustle and bustle of the City at night and in the middle of it in the day.

"Clean, comfortable and excellent value for money"

We were delighted with our stay in this quirky cottage. We have stayed in a number of guesthouses and self catering apartments when visiting our daughter at the University of Bath and this property definitely wins on location, quality of accommodation and value for money. Would recommend the walk to Bath along the canal via Bathampton. We will certainly come again.

Many thanks for taking the time to review our property. The walk along the canal is lovely and quite easy being level. During the season there is also a river bus to town with is another nice alternative to the bus or taxi.
I hope we will see you soon.

"Perfect weekend"

My partner and I had a lovely stay in the batch. It is perfectly situated to bath (be warned - the bus costs £3 per person for a 5 min drive, whereas a Cab was only £8 for two) and got som… More

I am very glad you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for the comment about the cab price. It really is a better bet than the bus. In better weather the walk along the canal is a great way to get into town and in the season there is a river taxi.
I hope we will see you again soon.

"lovely quirky cottage"

So pleased you liked it. Actually you can be staying in Bath and find it takes longer to walk to the centre of Bath that catching the bus in. It's actually a wonderful base for a proper week or two week holiday. There are some world class sites within an hour and so many country estates, game parks, museums villages and market towns to explore.

"Super clean and cosy appartment"

We spent 25 days in "The Batch" and our stay was great. There were 5 of us, and the landlord provided us with everything (from extra bedding to towels). The house was fully equipped with all necessary amenities and all the rooms were nicely decorated. There was also enough space for all of us. Nice and quiet family area with regular buses to the city centre (about £4.30 return).

It can be difficult and expensive to drive into Bath. The bus really works well, deliverers you to the centre and only takes a few minutes because of the dedicated bus lane.

We listen very carefully to what our guests tell us about their stay and we work hard to deliver the best we can. It is very rewarding when this is noticed.

"Delightful accommodation with easy access to beautiful surroundings"

Well planned accommodation serving as a great base to explore the surrounding countryside. All the modern conveniences one would wish for, plus the added advantage of cardio workout from climbing stairs! The layout is rather odd - the kitchen and bathroom are on the top floor, sitting room middle floor and bedroom at the bottom - quite a hike to use the bathroom in the middle of the night! Parking a bit of a challenge but not insurmountable.

The building is a converted Georgian church furniture workshop next to a converted forge. It is an upside down house but people seem to like the quirky nature of the place. Perhaps not ideal as a permanent home it is nice to experience something different while on holiday.
Most people find parking easy. As you said yourself in your email to me “Incidentally, we had no trouble with parking - had the car on the Batch for the duration.”
As you say it is a great base and I do hope we will see you again soon.

"good value for money"

A well located and well prepared. Just as advertised. In the large kitchen everything works perfectly. The bedroom is spacious and the bed is comfortable. House Ideal for 2 adults and 1 child.

It does work well with a child and we do not apply the three persons rate for a child.
