About the home
THE LOOKING GLASS HOUSE is an absolutely stunning stone and glass, architect designed, house of much style and plenty of substance. It has been built into the hillside and set in an enormous garden, surrounded by decks and stone patios, and featuring one of the most astonishing views in Bath.
This amazing house has the added benefit of GATED ON-SITE PARKING SPACES as well as exclusive use of the large Garden and patios.
The house is mainly on one floor with a wide hallway opening into the amazing living area. The solid wood flooring and much glass give a feeling of light and space throughout. The gracious living room overlooks the beautiful hillside and garden with pleasant views from every side.
The living room is surrounded by glass and the floor to ceiling windows let in plenty of light along with the astonishing view. There is a handsome modern kitchen adjoining the dining area with views to the garden and patio below.
The house has been beautifully furnished in a combination of contemporary and "Orientalist" period, with elegant sofa and dining space for 6. There is lovely large window overlooking the garden, and of course there is flat screen TV with DVD, as well as stereo with Ipod dock, and of course, WIFI
There are two main bedrooms, one with king sized bed and one with double bed only. Both bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms. There is also a downstairs area with additional sitting and sleeping space as well as shower room. The bed in the downstairs area is an attractive "Trundle Bed" and can be either a single or a double.
This house is on Lyncombe Hill, one of the 7 hills that form the little city of Bath and is a 20 minute walk to the centre or a £5 cab ride.
The Looking Glass House is simply fantastic in its style and totally unique to our roster. Spacious, stylish and bright, its unusual features and stunning views make it a magical location for your visit to Bath.
PLEASE NOTE: PARTIES: The Owners of the Looking Glass House do not want what is generally though of as "Hen Parties" in this house. If you think you may be too high spirited for the Looking Glass House, another choice might be preferable.
WHIY: Although the neighbours are all far away, the owners expect you all to be very civilised as the house is overlooking a quiet valley, so that all sound will reverberate throughout the pristine hillside neighbourhood - and the neighbours will not tolerate too many high jinks going on.
Otherwise, this is an absolutely amazing house and a pleasure to stay in.

The West Country / Somerset region

This is Bath, the centre of the West Country, with Stonehenge, Glastonbury, Wells and Wales just a short drive away.
Surrounding Bath:
Bath is in a wonderfully central position in the Southwest, laying at the foot of the Cotswolds and at the gate to the Mendips. There are fascinating prehistoric and heritage sites fanning out in all directions - most in less than an hours drive. Here are some of the highlights:
To the South West:
Stonehenge
http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.876
Yes it looks exactly like the Stonehenge you have seen in pictures! But it is the real thing! Thousands and thousands of years old and no one really knows what its true purpose was or who built it. Exceedingly interesting audio guides and fine gift shop as well as outside tea shop serving yummy and comforting "rock cakes". There are many tours that include Stonehenge you will find in our Tours around Bath section.
Salisbury and Old Sarum:
http://www.salisburycathedral.org.uk/
http://www3.iath.virginia.edu/salisbury/docs/cathedral.html
On the route that will lead you to Stonehenge is the city of Salisbury, renowned for its amazing Medieval Cathedral, which is unique in Britain. Built entirely in the 13th century, between 1220 and 1256, its unity of vision is remarkable. Its beauty has inspired generations of artists, including Constable, to capture with paintbrush or camera, its famous spire, the tallest spire in England (at 404 feet), rising above the Salisbury meadows and the River Avon.
Old Sarum:
http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/oldsarum/
Just a few miles from the cathedral city of Salisbury lies Old Sarum, the original site of Salisbury. This is a massive Iron Age hill fort which was reused succeeding conquerors, including the Romans, the Saxons and the Normans, flourishing in medieval England. This dramatic site at Old Sarum contains the ruins of a castle, a Cathedral and Bishop's Palace. The Iron Age ramparts give fine views of the surrounding landscape.
Stourhead Gardens:
http://www.gardenvisit.com/g/stour2.htm
The splendid Gardens of Stourhead
Stourhead is acclaimed as one of Brittains most picturesque gardens. The garden was designed in 1741 and enhanced by new species of trees from America in the 1790s. It surrounds a peaceful lake in the middle of a 2,650 acre estate, and has many classical architectural features dotted about in strategic spots around the shores. It is a picture perfect example of landscape gardening and a fine day our in the gorgeous English countryside.
Longleat:
http://www.longleat.co.uk/
This amazing home of our own Marquis of Bath is about half way between Bath and Stonehenge and makes another full days outing. It is an amazing home - more like an Elizabethan Castle than a house, and it is set alongside a lake in glorious parkland.
The principal contribution to the grounds was made by the 3rd Viscount of Weymouth (1734-1796) who employed Capability Brown to create the park as it is seen today. Oh, and it also is home to a fantastic Wild Animal Park! In 1966, Longleat caused a revolution in the world of zoological collections by becoming the first location outside of Africa to open a drive through Safari Park. Despite the understandable initial concerns of locals with regard to the introduction of lions to Wiltshire, the Safari Park concept has been a great success and LongleatÕs ground-breaking innovation has been repeated at wildlife collections all over the world.
To the West:
Avebury Stone Circles:

The view of the Village surrounded by the ancient Stones
The Stones
Lacock:
http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/chippenham/lacock/
This National Trust Village is a real Living Museum!
Lacock is a well-preserved medieval village under the protection of the National Trust. Many movies are filmed here as it is a perfect period village setting, once you remove the automobiles. The ancient Lacock Abbey also has been used in the Harry Potter movies.
To the North:
Castle Combe and the Cotswolds
http://www.cotswolds.info/places/castle-combe.shtml
The unbelievably pristine village of Castle Combe. Just 20 minutes from Bath!
The Cotswolds are centred on the gentle slopes of the Cotswolds Hills and are officially designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the largest in England and Wales, and made up from parts of 6 English Counties.
The region is famous for its ancient mellow 'honey' coloured limestone villages that blend perfectly into the countryside and its bustling market towns. Many have scarcely altered since they grew up on the prosperity of the medieval wool trade in the 15th and 16th centuries and subsequently forgotten about for more then 300 years. This sequence of events now makes the Cotswolds region one of the most treasured, toured and vacation in England and the UK for nowhere else will you see such timeless uniqueness and heart warming preservation on such a scale.
The Bath / Central Bath area
You are in the city of Bath, World Heritage Site and home of the Roman Baths, the new Thermae Bath Spa, the Assembly Rooms, the Jane Austen Centre. There is also fantastic shopping in Bath and all within the most glorious Georgian architecture.

Guestbook for Looking Glass House 7005
26 & 27 of November 2010 in The Looking Glass House - Kate Eastman
The Looking Glass House
Dear Laura,
The looking Glass House was fabulous, it far exceeded our expectations, the setting , it’s lay out and facilities. It was a great base for our shopping weekend and so comfortable we ate in both nights instead of hitting the town. The little extras - tea, coffee, biscuits, milk and croissants were appreciated and a nice touch . It was an easy walk into town even in the snow and it would have been possible to walk home but we were carrying too much!! so taxis were needed.
I will certainly recommend it to anyone wanting a weekend away in Bath and as we didn’t get time for the spa we hope to return in the spring.
Many thanks
Kate Eastman
