The New South Wales region

The unspoilt natural beauty of the southern coastline of New South Wales unfolds in a series of bays and coves. Little townships, many with interesting histories, are known for their fine food and wines, and great country markets. Superb local cheeses are a speciality.
Marine mammals take pride of place – pods of dolphins and migratory whales cruise past secluded white-sand beaches, and Australian fur seals thrive on Montague Island. There are two marine parks here - at Jervis Bay and Batemans Bay.

The Batemans Bay / South Durras area
Batemans Bay is a bustling coastal town with majestic seascapes located on the estuary of the Clyde River.
From watercolour artists and rock fishermen to sandcastle builders, there’s something for everyone both in Batemans Bay and along its sublime stretch of coast.
Extensive shell middens in the national parks to the north and south are evidence of Aboriginal habitation in the area. These parks also boast abundant animal life.
The 27-hole Catalina Country Club is rated one of the finest courses on the South Coast.
History
Timber and fishing were the town’s economic mainstays in the 19th century, but at the time Batemans Bay was much smaller than the nearby towns of Mogo and Nelligen. It was not until a bridge was built across the Clyde River in 1956 that Batemans Bay began to thrive as the main service centre for a popular holiday region.
Things to do
Take a lunchtime cruise along the Clyde River from Batemans Bay as far as Nelligen, 11 km up-river. Or hire a houseboat and stay overnight.
Drive south from Batemans Bay along Beach Road, which winds past a string of picturesque coves and beaches.
Drop a line off the rock wall and hook a bream.
Explore Murramarang National Park, with its friendly eastern grey kangaroos.
Savour Clyde River oysters fresh from the estuary.
Browse the local art and craft galleries.
Walk along the Durras Discovery Trail.
Events
The George Bass Marathon, held each January in even-numbered years, is the world’s toughest surfboat race. After a thrilling, colourful send-off from Batemans Bay, crews row 170 km south to Eden.
Don’t miss
Birdland Animal Park, which has a huge collection of Australian native birds, an animal nursery, duck ponds, waterfalls as well as rides on the Birdsville Express train through 3 hectares of parkland.
Browsing in the local art and craft galleries.

Guestbook for Lyrebird Dell
My family and I had a great time, thanks! My father and I went fishing every day, but we only caught two fish :(. we also saw a seal in the surt. --Oliver
We had a wonderful weekend getaway! Such a lovely place--enjoyed the fire at night. Very nice to use the well-maintained BBQ--enjoyed cooking and eating local seafood... --Raelene & Ben
We found and booked this house over the internet from Scotland...the property and area were so much more than we could have hoped for. The house feels immediately welcoming and relaxing. The location in the woods suited us perfectly--we saw a variety of birds in the garden and kangaroos, and lizards. The walking round here is good. The beach is paradise. Thank you. Jenny and John
We enjoyed our visits from the kangaroos and the peacock. We loved exploring the national park, swimming with rays at the south end of Cookies Beach, cooking fabulous seafood in the well-equipt kitchen and watching a film in front of the fire at the end of it all. Thanks very much. Annabelle and Virginia
Within the first 3 hours of our stay, we managed a 7km bike run up the headland, through bush, rode along the beach, and explored rock pools. As you provided kayaks and life jackets, we explored the lake. We have seen just about every type of wild animal here and that was BEFORE we hit Mogo Zoo! Absolutely everything we could've thought to need, want or supplement was provided for, which has helped make Lyrebird become one of our best and most romantic holidays ever. Jina and Nick
