The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
This villa was purchased mostly because of it's superb location. It's only 2 hours from the capital, Sofia, mostly by motorway - handy for the airport or for a day out sightseeing or shopping. It's also only an hour from the second largest city, Plovdiv, which has a wonderful medieval old town, original Byzantine city walls and numerous historical remains, e.g. Roman Forum and Amphiteatre.
The area around is also rich in history and you will find Thracian tombs, ancient Churches and Monasteries, forts etc. There are also numerous traditional villages frozen in time, offering folk festivals and traditional dancing and bagpipe playing. There's also many natural wonders, including the famous Devil's Throat cave, the place where Orpheus decended into the underworld. The nearby Trigrad gorge is also quite an experience to drive through.
In Summer, this area in famous for fishing and hiking. Other mountain sports e.g. white water rafting, climbing, mountain biking, caving etc can be arranged.
In Winter, this is a popular ski resort for Bulgarians, with Batak ski centre being only a 5 minute drive away. It is smaller and less sophisticated than the 3 big Bulgarian ski resorts, but offers fantastic views from the piste over the lake and excellent value for money. Check out: http://www.bulgariaski.com/otherresorts/tsigovchark.shtml
Last but not least, do not miss a trip to nearby Velingrad. This is Bulgaria's biggest spa resort, where Bulgarian and Russian tourists have been flocking for years to be cured of their ailments. If you have Rhumatism or just fancy a day of pampering, this is the place to go. Luxury 5 star hotels with top quality facilities offer treatments at amazing prices e.g. mud bath or massage £6, full day (swimming pool, sauna, gym, steam bath, turkish bath) £11.
An excellent time to visit is Autumn, when you will not believe the colours of the forests! As well as the higher peaks covered in pine trees, there are forests very close to the Villa which you can drive through to see the dense woodland splashed with bright reds, yellows and oranges. Truely Europe's New England.
Batak area
Batak itself is a small town, lying in a valley with the mountains all around. Life is simple here and people are not well off, but they genuinely welcome visitors with great warmth. Here you will see typical mountain life rather than a tourist resort - truely an experience. This is one of the most famous towns in Bulgaria, being the site of a famous battle against the Turks. There are 2 museums and other places of interest. There are 2 churches, one with a lovely dome and fantastic colours inside and out. The other is not for the faint hearted, still having bullet holes in the thick stone walls and bones on display in the vault, from the Turkish massacre. There are plenty of cafes and shops and a couple of small restaurants, plus a big new restaurant offering superb food and occasional entertainment. Out of town by the lake there is another very good and cheap restaurant. Typical prices in the area: Double vodka / beer: 50p Main course: £1 - £3 Full day's skiing - £5 Supermarket - beer: 35p per litre
How to get there
Return flights from UK -> Sofia are about £60 per person from wizzair.com - including taxes! Price for family of 4, peak season (Feb 06), is currently approx £240. It's also possible to fly to Plovdiv which is even nearer to the villa.
Car hire is available from www.bulgariacarrent.com. Approx £11 per day inc unlimited miles and full insurance. They also offer a chauffeur driven transfer service for those not wishing to drive. A regular public bus runs every hour from Sofia.
