The Lake District National Park lies at the heart of Cumbria and contains well known and much loved holiday destinations such as Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere, here there are lots of charming Lakeland villages to discover and visitor attractions for all the family. The northern and western lakes have miles of untouched natural rugged beauty and rural villages as well as being home to the historic northern lakes town of Keswick with its many shops, pubs and restaurants; providing a great holiday base. Other areas to discover include the Eden Valley, Cartmel peninsula, south east Cumbria and the Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall area; all equally beautiful and very handy for day trips into the lakes.
Walks from the doorstep of The Ruddings are endless. The open country that surrounds the barn is ideal for hikers with the magnificent Skiddaw rising up above the village and Grisedale Pike to the south west just waiting to be climbed. Bassenthwaite Lake is a great place to fish or to sail. Ospreys can be spotted here and inbetween May and September you can watch the adults raising their youngsters from the live web camera feeds at Whinlatter Forest Park. Bassenthwaite village is largely an agricultural community with a small shop and pub serving both residents and visitors. Keswick and the ancient market town of Cockermouth are both within easy reach. Here more useful amenities can be found as well as an array of attractions, lakeside walks and interesting landmarks.
