About this location

The Rutland region

Well-renowned as the smallest county in England, Rutland is your quintessentially English county, steeped in history with stunning rural surroundings and offering many attractions and activities throughout the year. Located between the cities of Peterborough and Leicester, it is accessible by train to London only 1 hr away. Rutland is a well-kept secret and consequently still a peaceful unspoilt part of rural England. Those who visit Rutland are looking to enjoy beautiful countryside, with scenic villages and market towns to explore, with the added attraction of the famous Rutland Water and all it offers right on your doorstep. This is the perfect location to escape to, surrounded by peace and tranquility but also with plenty on offer to do and see when desired.

Barrowden, Rutland

The picturesque village of Barrowden is situated in the heart of Rutland within 20 minutes from the 3 historic market towns of Oakham, Uppingham and Stamford. Famous for their well-known public schools, these towns offer stunning architecture and churches, as well as wonderful boutique shops, restaurants, pubs and theatres, plus the weekly outdoor markets offering the chance to sample and local produce.

Throughout the year there are numerous events to attend around the county from open-air Shakespeare at Tolethorpe Hall, Burghley Horse Trials and many sporting events held at Rutland Water, to Christmas fairs and food festivals, and magnificent stately homes such as Burghley House, Rockingham and Belvoir Castles to name but a few.

Rutland Water offers many attractions and activities for those who want a sporting challenge and for those who wish to enjoy a leisurely walk on the shores of the water. There is a sailing club at Edith Weston where you can hire boats and wind surfers, a Watersports centre at Whitwell for a variety of activities for adults and children. There is a climbing wall and high wire activity centre open all year round. There are several cycle centres situated around the Water where you can hire bikes and trailers to enjoy the 25 mile cycle route with cafes, pubs and restaurants en route. There is a fishing lodge and bird watching centre where people come from far and wide to enjoy the nature reserve of Rutland Water and all the wildlife it attracts. There is the internationally renowned Birdfair which takes place every Summer. There is something here in Rutland to please everyone!

"A comfortable and well-equipped cottage in a beautiful village."

The owner made the whole booking experience very straightforward, and was there to welcome us on arrival. The cottage was extremely comfortable, stylish, and well-equipped, and the perfect base for exploring the beautiful Rutland countryside together with the attractive town of Stamford. Most of the mod cons people need were present and were of a high standard. All-in-all, the perfect accommodation for a country getaway. Am loath to write anything negative, but if pushed will say that it is the bathroom being downstairs, although not unusual in a period cottage such as this.
