The Barnstaple area
Barnstaple is the commercial centre of the region, combining sophisticated shopping with the bustling atmosphere of markets and speciality shops. The modern Green Lanes Shopping Centre compliments the traditional Pannier and Craft Markets held since 1855 in the Pannier Market Hall.
This attractive market town is the oldest and largest town in North Devon, nestling in the Taw valley on the other side of the estuary which the Saxons first settled in Barnstaple (Barum) over 1000 years ago.
The Long Bridge, crossing the tidal River Taw was thought to have been built in the 12th and 13th centuries and in Litchdon Street are located the Penrose Almshouses built in the early 17th century.

We had a great stay at Rose Barn cottage, 12 of us went for new year and was everything we could have wanted. The pool, sauna and bikes were great. The cottage has everything that you could ever need and more. I would highly recommend this property and location so much so, that we have booked for next year. |

Where to start? The web site, I had to compliment the owners early on for an excellent web site that gives you almost all the information you need. Due to the constant improvements being carried out the published brochure that we received was a little out of date but that's understandable. Just before arrival why not book a veg and fruit delivery – ours was excellent! When booking any accommodation the published photos are usually well out of date and on arrival you often find the interior rather tired looking but not with this property, every room, every facility met or exceeded our expectations. Sadly the sauna was out of order for our stay but the pool was great and used at least once a day by the family. If you are into badminton equipment is supplied so you don't need your own. A few comments for dog owners (and if you are not rest assured some of the accommodation is strictly pet free). Local walks are excellent but be careful on the single track road outside the complex. If you enjoy walking with a watering hole on route, turning either left or to the right on the main road will take you to a dog friendly pub, both of which serve food. According to my mate Tom Tom one is 0.7 miles and the other a little further at 0.75 miles. Of course that is fine for we owners but what do our canine friends really like? For ours it was the beaches. As far as we could see most beaches had seasonal restrictions but only for part of the area. Even in November some beach car parks were still charging but nothing extortionate and the quality of the beaches made that worthwhile. As much as we have enjoyed our pre-Christmas family get-togethers over the years we have always found somewhere new for the next gathering. Combrew Cottages will be the first destination where we all agree that it is a place that we will return to at some point in the future – what more can I say? |

The Cottage is a lovely reteat from a busy city life. Cosy but very spacious. It really is wonderful place for a family of all ages, our party ranged from 3months to 76years and each and every one of us enjoyed the break. The kids loved the play ground, feeding the animals and playing in the swimming pool whilst the adults enjoyed working out in the gym, playing table tennis and generally relaxing within the cottage. Waking up to fresh eggs was something everyone looked forward to! We were lucky enough to have some beautiful weather to enjoy a BBQ in the garden, and would highly recommend visiting Woolacombe beach. There is an aray of attractions close by,there is lots of leaflets in the cottage for you to look at, we visited several!! Sue and her family were fantastic hosts, really friendly and very helpful. On call whenever to help us. Would love to visit again! |
