The Devon region

With a very mild climate all year round North Devon is a wonderful location at any time of year

Barnstaple is the commercial centre of the region, combining sophisticated shopping with the bustling atmosphere of markets and speciality shops. The modern Green Lanes Shopping Centre compliments the traditional Pannier and Craft Markets held since 1855 in the Pannier Market Hall.

This attractive market town is the oldest and largest town in North Devon, nestling in the Taw valley on the other side of the estuary which the Saxons first settled in Barnstaple (Barum) over 1000 years ago.

The Long Bridge, crossing the tidal River Taw was thought to have been built in the 12th and 13th centuries and in Litchdon Street are located the Penrose Almshouses built in the early 17th century.

"Superb value for money, don't miss out!"

Everything you could wish for, beautiful cottage, spotlessly clean and very we'll maintained we enjoyed another totally chilled out stay at Combrew Farm, this place really is a jewel in North Devon, Sue & John make sure your stay is so comfortable you don't want to leave! Everything is within walking distance or a short drive away. we stayed in Tuckers cottage again, lots of little extras surprise you, from fresh eggs from the chickens to biscuits to have with your first cuppa after a long journey. We took the dog this time which made the long walks even more enjoyable and when we got back we were able to relax in the jacuzzi before dinner, where else can you do this without paying top hotel prices? Superb value for money we will definitely return.

"All you need, clean tidy and presentable"

Stayed at Tuckers retreat during Feb half term 2015 with my wife and 2 teenage boys and our small dog. The accommodation is excellent, everything we needed and even that which we didn't, dishwasher, washing machine, WiFi large TV plus TV in the main bedroom. 2 bathrooms and a well equipped kitchen. Boys made good use of the well heated swimming pool which features jacuzzi and water jets. Owners Sue and John made us very welcome supplying complimentary milk and some eggs which you can buy for a £1 when you run out. Good walk from the house to Fremington Quay which tired out the dog on a daily basis. Good area to explore too, recommend Clovelly, Lynton and Lynmouth and the Valley of Rocks. Would love to go back one day, its faultless.

"So much to do in one place!"

It would be quite possible to stay here without once using a car, as there is so much to do around the farm, and the village only 10 minutes walk away. Fremington Quay was beautiful (don't rely on the bike shop there though, he advertises as open, but wasn't actually there), we swam every day, and enjoyed walks from the farm. But we had to use the car, because I couldn't resist the delights of Exmoor, and the walks on the Hangman Hills. The cottage was so comfortable and beautiful, and all that was missing was a vegetable peeler and something to poke the fire with! We came in February, and I'd like to come back in the summer and make even more of the many outdoor spaces.

"Fantastic family holiday"

We spent our first family holiday here with our 4 month baby and dog, the cottages are really comfortable, have everything you need in a great setting. We found lots of walks, on the beach even with the buggy, it is a stunning coastline. Our daughter loved the warm pool and we all appreciated the log burner in the evenings, very cosy. I would recommend to anyone with (or without) young children.

"Ideal location for walking, cycling and shopping with a cosy cottage to return to"

We stayed for a weekend and enjoyed walking from Fremington Quay along the Tarka Trail to Instow. The Instow Arms had a lovely setting looking out over the beach. The Cafe at Fremington is also worth a visit for the cakes!

The cottage itself was warm and cosy - clean - spacious bathrooms. We enjoyed the wonderful pool and sauna area. Returned home feeling relaxed and refreshed.

"One of the best self catering cottages we have stayed in"

This was an amazing find, we have been visiting friends in Fremington for many years and never realised this small complex was there. We received a warm welcome and were immediately impressed with the quality of the decor and the furnishings and how well equipped our cottage was. We spent the week walking our dogs and exploring the local area so, unfortunately, did not use the facilities but everything seemed very well maintained. We have been using self catering cottages, 2 or 3 times a year, for over 15 years and this is one of the best we have ever stayed in.

"What a Gem!"

We loved our stay at Tuckers Retreat. The facilities are 5 star and Sue is a wonderful host. We will definitely be visiting again with Stan the dog, who enjoyed the long walks and bike rides as much as we did.

"Fantastic Cottage in a great location"

This is our third visit to Tuckers retreat and our fourth to Combrew Farm. As always excellent accomodation and facilities in a brilliant setting. Combrew has easy access to many attractions. The added benefit of cycle hire on site was a real bonus. Looking forward to returning to Combrew in the future.

"Go and stay at Combrew Farm Cottages"

Lovely cottage and very friendly and helpful owner.
Lots of facilities; pool, games room, outside play area. Our children didn't use them as much as we thought they would because we had a week of fantastic weather and we were out all day. Had it been raining the facilities would have really helped to keep the children entertained.
Although all the cottages were full, we rarely met anyone else and it was lovely and peaceful.
The location was great as it was only a short ride to get on to the Tarka trail. We went towards Bideford one day and Braunton on another. There is lots to do in this area and we never ran out of things to do.
