A range of quality new mountain bikes, adults, teenagers and child's, are now available - cycle from Tuckers Retreat and join the famous nearby Tarka Trail - the 180 mile dedicated scenic cycling and walking route.

The Barnstaple area

Barnstaple is the commercial centre of the region, combining sophisticated shopping with the bustling atmosphere of markets and speciality shops. The modern Green Lanes Shopping Centre compliments the traditional Pannier and Craft Markets held since 1855 in the Pannier Market Hall.

This attractive market town is the oldest and largest town in North Devon, nestling in the Taw valley on the other side of the estuary which the Saxons first settled in Barnstaple (Barum) over 1000 years ago.

The Long Bridge, crossing the tidal River Taw was thought to have been built in the 12th and 13th centuries and in Litchdon Street are located the Penrose Almshouses built in the early 17th century.

“Excellent accommodation” Combrew Farm was fabulous. The accommodation - Tuckers Retreat - was cosy and well-appointed. The owners left us lovely welcoming gifts, and it was reassuring to have them on site. The facilities are great - the pool was particularly appreciated by our two girls. Great to have bike hire too, at a reasonable price. Had a wonderful holiday, wouldn't hesitate to go again.

“Tuckers Retreat a lovely relaxing cosy holiday cottage.” Combrew Farm a lovely place to stay,quiet and peaceful with a lovely relaxing swimming pool and spa. Owners very welcoming and helpful. Plenty to do in the area with plenty of cycle paths,walking,beaches or just relaxing and dining in the lovely pubs around the area. Excellent 5 star holiday.

“A lovely cottage in lovely surroundings complete with fabulous hosts” Despite the bad weather, which was a first for us in Devon at this time of year, the cottage was lovely and we had a very well earned tranquil vacation. This was made even better with our nightly visits from Arthur, the farm cat who snuggled up with us of an evening on the sofa until he had had enough and went before bedtime. Even better were the goats who we fed daily and my daughter fell in love with them.

“Wonderful, relaxing, highly recommended.” A superb cottage in a beautiful location. Lovely and clean and welcoming. The swimming pool is really warm (like a hot bath) and the children loved the trampolines. Very easy access to the Tarka Trail and the beaches at Croyde, Woolacombe and Instow are all within a 30 minute drive.

“Excellent holiday base” Excellent on site facilities after great days out on the Tarka trail and surfing. A central base for discovering North Devon. Accomodated in Tuckers Retreat Cottage which had home from home facilities, fully fitted kitchen, wood burner and new large LCD TV's in main bedroom and lounge. Very warm welcome from host with good local knowledge.

“Fell in love with Combrew Farm” What a find this place was. It felt like we were right out in the country but we were only a five minute walk from the main road; a15 minute walk to Fremington Quay and 10 minutes on the bus to Barnstaple. In fact everything we needed was within easy distance. The cottage was lovely as was the whole farm set up; spacious, beautifully designed and with very pretty gardens. There are also plenty of facilities so if the weather isn't good there are things to do. The pool is great and there is a fitness room, tennis court, badminton court and games room (darts, pool and table tennis) as well as a big play area for the children and an information room with access to the internet and plenty of books. Tuckers Retreat cottage is compact and very cosy but has lots of natural light. It had everything we needed and the beds were really comfortable. The kitchen door led to a lovely courtyard with a fish pond, it was so relaxing sitting out there in the sun. The only suggestion we would make would be to invest in more up to date integrated digital TV's (especially the one in the main bedroom) rather than have the separate digi boxes as turning on the TV was not straightforward and we were often pressing all the wrong buttons!, However that is a minor issue in the great scheme of things and I am sure it would not bother many people; it's just that we do like our TV's. We didn't go out much but we didn't feel the need to, it was just nice chilling out in the cottage and using all the facilities. We did walk to Fremington Quay which is really pretty and there is a great little cafe there, you can also hire bikes to cycle the Tarka trail. The warm hospitality of the Tucker family - Sue, John and Ross - was second to none; they were so friendly and approachable and anything we asked for was always met with a smiling face and a 'no problem' attitude. We absolutely loved staying here and we have already booked our spot for next year, can't wait to go back to this little spot of heaven. Response: latest LED tv's now added - 42" in the lounge and 32" in the master bedroom, and brand new mountain bikes now available from the farm.

“Warm, homely and welcoming cottage in a beautiful location” The cottage was beautiful and very comfortable, with lots of added extras like a log burner (for those chilly evenings) and little touches such as a pint of milk in the fridge on arrival and teabags in the caddy - all things that help to make you feel welcome and at home. Everything is provided so it's easy to cater for yourself, or Barnstaple is a short taxi ride away (about £10) if you want a night out. The bus stop is at the end of the lane so you can take the bus to Instow and visit the Boathouse fish restaurant - an stunning setting on the seafront and lovely food. Or you can walk down to Fremington Quay for breakfast at the cafe beside the picturesque estuary. The pool was clean and luxuriously warm, just the thing after a day walking along the Tarka Trail or on the Braunton Burrows. We can thoroughly recommend Combrew Cottages - the welcome is warm and friendly, the location is spot on (in the beautiful North Devon countryside but a short drive to town), and the cottages are just like a home away from home.
