The Northern England / Northumberland region

The cottages are set in an elevated area of the North Pennines, an area of outstanding and unspoilt natural beauty.
The North Pennines are a wonder of millions of years of geological shaping from High Force on the River Tees to the U-shaped valley of High Cup Gill above Dufton. Designated as Britain’s first Geopark and member of UNESCOs Global Geoparks Network.
Some of the differences in the land can be seen in the white stone building of the tip of the North Pennines and the red sandstone villages at its foot.
An area famous for its volume and variety of flora and fauna, many areas left unfarmed have enabled significant wildlife area to establish. So untouched it is one of the few areas left that remains home to the elusive red squirrel and rare arctic-alpine plants.
The Barnard Castle / Baldersdale area
Baldersdale is a branch dale off Teesdale, where you will find the reservoirs of Hury, Blackton & Balderhead. Baldersdale came to fame in the 1970s as the home of Hannah Hauxwell who ran her farm single handedly and without running water. Hannah’s meadow is now managed by Durham Wildlife Trust as a nature reserve and can be visited to learn more about her life and work.
Definitely a place for discovering rare and profuse wildlife and flora Baldersdale is a bird watcher's paradise. For wild flowers venture to Upper Teesdale Nature Reserve or Flatts Woods at Barnard Castle.
There are purpose built cycle routes through Hamsterley Forest, much more moutain biking around Co Durham, the 'Wanly to Wear' cycle route and also a coast to coast route.
If you prefer to discover the area on foot wander along the Pennine Way or Cauldron Snout, visit Killhope Lead Mining Centre, the Weardales Railway Project, Barnard Castle, Raby Castle or Eggleston Hall and gardens.
If horses are your thing your can go trekking locally or attend the races at Redcar, Sedgefield or Newcastle. Fish at Hury Reservoir or dingy sail and windsurf at Grassholme Reservoir.
