Ty'r Adar is part of a converted slate cutting shed

House | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 6

Key Info
  • Great for children of all ages
  • Pets welcome
  • Car not necessary

The stylishly converted Victorian slate cutting mill is in an amazing location just outside Arthog near Barmouth and Dolgellau with direct access to the beautiful Mawddach Estuary. Ty'r Adar is a spacious property adjoining three other holiday homes, our B & B and small camp site.

Guests are welcome to explore Graig Wen's 45 acres of beautiful woods and meadows. With the spectacular (and family friendly) Mawddach cycle trail at the bottom of our track, you'll probably want to bring your bike.

The large open plan lounge/kitchen has a woodburning stove and is decorated in cosy colours with big comfy sofas and lots of books, games and DVDs. The two large bedrooms have Welsh blankets on the beds which can be set up as superkings or singles. There's also a good quality sofa bed downstairs by the woodburner.

Ty'r Adar means "House of Birds". There's no estuary view but the feeder outside the window is always alive with finches, tits, siskins and many other birds - and there's something special about lying in bed and listening to the owls hooting outside. If you are looking for a comfortable place to unwind after a day in Snowdonia Ty'r Adar is a good choice.

For mountain bikers visiting nearby Coed-y-Brenin, we can provide lockable storage. As well as cycling and walking trails and events on site, there's horse riding, fishing, golf, a sandy beach and wonderful wildlife within 10 minutes drive. Situated mid way between the Centre for Alternative Technology to the south and Portmeirion and Harlech Castle to the north, there's lots to do in the Dolgellau area.

Owners Sarah and John live on site so if you want to know about the best places to eat, walk, or where to hear a Welsh Male Voice choir rehearse, just pop round and ask. Let us know if you would like to book a breakfast hamper for your arrival.

The North Wales region

Snowdonia National Park in North Wales has the highest mountain in Wales and England, miles of quiet beaches, ancient castles and activities to suit all sorts of ages. From taking a steam train to the top of Mount Snowdon to cycling car-free paths through stunning scenery, Snowdonia offers memorable experiences for all the family. Climb the battlements of Harlech castle one day, explore an old slate mine the next and feast on a fabulous lunch in the Italianate village of Portmerion -one man's extraordinary vision and folly.

In sunshine the scenery is extraordinary - some say it reminds them of New Zeland. Even if it rains there's loads to do - from Europe's longest zip wire to world class biking trails...or tucking into the best Welsh lamb you will ever eat in one of oue quality places to eat.

Southern Snowdonia is quieter than the Northern mountains - you can lose yourself in the hills all day and rarely see a soul. It's a slower pace of life round here. You will meet Welsh speaking people from shepherds to shop keepers who are happy to share their love and knowledge of the area. You won't have traffic problems, but make sure you bring some spare change for the quirky old toll briges or passengers ferries that help you get around.

Barmouth

Just a few minutes from our Snowdonia B & B, camping and self-catering accommodation, you can go horse-riding on sandy beaches, mountain biking at Coed-y-Brenin, fishing, sailing or kayaking. You can walk for hours in our quiet corner of Snowdonia National Park and see just mountains, sky and sheep.

You can walk directly through our 45 acres of wild woodland and meadows to the edge of the Mawddach Estuary and Mawddach Trail. The stunning waterside path from Dolgellau right over the iconic bridge into Barmouth is a 15km disused railway line so it's a superb flat path ideal for walking or cycling.
