The North Wales region

This area of North Wales is almost entirely part of Snowdonia National Park. Known for it's dramatic scenery,it also benefits from numerous sandy beaches and lakes.Tourism is it's main industry and so you will find you are well catered for whether it's walking, climbing, cycling, swimming, sailing, touring, castles, gardens, stately homes, art exhibitions, nature trails etc. 2 best known local walks are Panorama Walk & The Mawddach Trail. There is still a main line train service which provides wonderful coastal views but you may be more interested in the 9 Little Trains plus the Snowdon Mountain Railway all within 50 miles of your cottage. The most popular local sights for visitors are Harlech Castle, various Slate Caverns and the famous and unusual village of Portmeirion. The climate is mild Oceanic greatly influenced by the Gulf Stream.

In a nutshell you would describe Barmouth as having a wonderful 2km. long beach; an attractive and lively Harbour area; spectacular scenery especially up one of the most beautiful estuaries in the world; birthplace of The National Trust and a walkers paradise. The town hosts 4 festivals. In July there is Country & Western and a Kite Flying Festival. 1st. week in September there's an Art Festival and for 9 days around the 3rd. week there is a very popular Walking Festival catering for all abilities. The local Theatre holds events throughout the year but the most popular is a Jazz/Soul/Folk evening held every 4th. Friday in a cabaret setting. Originally, Barmouth was a tiny hamlet built almost entirely on the rock over-looking the river mouth and frequented by pirates. The sea receded, access improved and a small fishing and ship building industry grew.In the 19th. Century the train came and Barmouth almost immediately moved over to tourism and expanded. Barmouth's most well known feature is the 1km. long railway bridge over the Mawddach river which doubles as a footpath & cycle route giving spectacular views up the estuary towards Cader Idris. Queen Victoria once stopped her train to admire the view!

Dear Peter R.; Thank you for taking the time to write a review and we're very glad you enjoyed your week there. Improvements are ongoing with wi-fi recently installed but you are correct; the television is due for modernisation and will be replaced soon although we feel the sound quality on these modern flat screen televisions will not match up. The carpet is exactly the same upstairs & down but will feel different because the flooring downstairs is concrete. We're looking forward to your next stay. S J.
