The Tuscany region

Tuscany is famous world wide for wine and rolling hills, but there is a little known part of Tuscany - The Garfgnana.

Set amongst the splendour of the Serchio Vally between the Appenines and Apuan Alps, the region is well known to a select few for being one of the friendliest and welcoming in Italy.

It is packed with history and here you will find Italy as lived by the Italians.

From local Festas and carnivals to picturesque villages where you can sample locally produced delicacies, all made from organically grown produce. Specialities include porcini mushrooms, harvested from the forest as well as wild berries such as bilberries. Wild boar is hunted in the woodlands and available on many menus in the mainly family run restaurants which abound.

Barga is a Medieaval City and is known as the most Scottish town in Italy. It has strong connections with Glasgow and East Lothian, dating back from emigration in the 18th Century.

Many Anglo Italians have now returned to their traditional roots, bringing an annual fish and chip festival which is held in July and August. Every year in the same months wednesday evenings see a series of artisan markets under the stars, accompanied by food, drink and typical Italian joy of the good things in life.

The whole of the surrounding area features ample opportunity to enjoy the many local traditions and museums of traditions, artefacts and historical sites. There are abundant clearly marked walking and cycling trails, a magnificent open air swimming pool, tennis courts and horse riding facilities.

Plenty to satisfy your athletic needs, followed by the great food and wine to relax in peace at the many local bars and cafes.
