La Cabana: though named "the cabin", this restored 18thC farmhouse is enormous and quite luxurious, with 7 rooms (6 doubles and a triple), each room with private bath. With two large living rooms, a well-equipped kitchen, an outdoor covered BBQ area, a huge indoor banquet hall with bar, this well-decorated house offers a very high standard of comfort, and the owners have put in a new swimming pool measuring 9m x 4.5m right in front of the house. Located a short walk to Casserres, a small agricultural town with a smattering of shops and restaurants, about 10kms off the main road to Barcelona.

The Costa Brava/Catalonia region
Climate is always a factor when planning a holiday. Barcelona's average yearly temperature during the day is a very comfortable 19.5ºC (70ºF). With global warming and erratic weather generally, it's hard to say when it rains (in '97 and '98 it hardly rained at all, and local authorities are studying plans to divert water all the way from the Rhône in France), but usually there are a few days of rain in Autumn and Spring. Because of the sea, humidity is often a factor, exacerbating summer stickiness and winter chill, though today, January 30, 2000, it was 17ºC and the beaches were packed.
Barcelona is full of tourists year-round, especially now that the city hosts so many important trade shows and conventions. Travellers in August should know what a good part of the city shuts down for most of the month. (Goethe's dictum about Rome in August also holds true for Barcelona.) Nevertheless, I find the city especially seductive in summer, when the beaches are full, plenty of interesting traveller´s about, everybody taking it easy, and there is little to no traffic, so exploring the city is a joy. It is a time of year for long rests at terraced cafés... and at night you have the festivals in Gracia or in Sants.
Barcelona / Berga area
Berga, 95 kms northwest of Barcelona, in the central Pyrenean foothills, a scenic area of dairy farms that has been popular with Barcelonans for years.
Situated just outside of Casserres, a small and sleepy but not unpleasant agricultural town just 7 kms west of Puig Reig and the main C-16 road between Barcelona and Toulouse, La Cabana is on the edge of town, which means you have privacy and lots of room to yourselves, but you can still walk or zip in town by car in minutes to shop or have a meal or a drink or pick up fresh croissants at the bakery for breakfast. Directly behind La Cabana is the town´s municipal pool and sports complex. The pool - with lifeguards on duty - is open only in summer months, and the complex includes a couple of pools, a football pitch, dressing rooms, and a small bar. This is a very welcome feature for kids, and daily entry fee is about 3 Euros. Perhaps the most stiking feature of this hilltop house are the lovely views of the Caplot and Berguedà mountains to the north.
How to get there
La Cabana is a five minute walk to the centre of the villas, with cafés, butcher shops and bakeries and supermarkets and a couple of restaurants.
Fly in to Barcelona airport with the likes of British Air or EZ Jet and it is just one hour by car.
Fly in to Girona airport with the likes of RyanAir and it is 75 minutes by car.
Otherwise, drive down through France or take the ferry to Santander and drive across Spain to Barcelona.

Further details outdoors: Aside from the fenced in pool and the outdoor dining area with BBQ, there is a walled in play area for kids and just outside that wall, clearly visible from the house, are large playing fields where kids can kick around a ball in perfect safety.

Mid-season is June and September.

A deposit of 25% of total rental fee is required to secure the booking.
This could be made with a VISA or MASTERCARD charge or by bank transfer to our account in Spain.
I will explain all the proceedures in detail, but they are time tested and true.
The balance due (the remaining 75%) is due either prepayed well in advance of your arrival, or preferrably in Euros cash upon arrival, once you have seen the property and verified that it is as described in the website.

Weekend rates are roughly 950 Euros for Friday and Saturday nights, and an additional 350 Euros per night for additional nights.

Just wanted to let you know that we had a wonderful time at La Cabana. When I first saw the house from the outside, I wondered how we'd all fit in, but there was plenty of room for us all and it didn't feel at all cramped, infact it was one of the most comfortable houses we've stayed in. Added to that Jose Niubo and his wife were very friendly and welcoming and we loved the region, so unspoilt and not at all touristy. Thanks for all your help and I hope you're not too exhausted after a busy summer.
The outdoor covered area is brilliant - the icing on the cake. It is enormous with a built in barbecue, sink and a very long table. Loads of room. At first we thought that lugging all the cutlery and plates up and down the stairs from the kitchen would be a real pain but with everyone doing there bit it wasn't so much of a chore.
When I spoke to you about the house and before I booked the place you mentioned that the public pool across the road could be a little noisy - it was all very peaceful when we were there - didn't hear so much as a splash - I don't think that it's a concern at all.
By all means use my comments and thanks again for everything. I've been telling all my friends what a great part of Spain it is - away from the madding crowds - hope it drums up more business for you.

Tout c'est bien déroulé et nous avons passé de super vacances. Tout le monde a été enchanté de son séjour. La Cabana est une trés belle maison, spacieuse et de qualité, au calme (sauf le tracteur le matin !). La piscine à fait le bonheur des petits et des grands. Joseph et sa famille sont trés sympa et disponibles.
Bref, une addresse à conseiller, d'autant plus que la région est trés jolie.

Our summer in Catalunya was a dream come true. La cabana is a comfortable house, well furnished and very easy to live in although we did not mind the stairs (as the living quarters are on the first floor) but it could be a problem for some people. The house itself has everything you need, service is impeccable, the pool, well maintained, many lounge chairs, a patio where we spent most of our days when we were not out visiting. The location cannot be better, 10 minute walking distance to the village, a plus. A great view of the Pyrenees which meant a nice breeze day and night wonderful because it can be very hot. Also being right in the centre of Catalunya allows you to travel very easily.
We just loved our summer. The owners, the Niubos were absolutely perfect, to us they were almost part of the family, very helpful we greatly appreciated their kindness. In other words, for us the everything worked all very well and we were exceptionnally pleased. I must add that the info that you provided to us was helpful , a great help in planning our visits our trips. Thank you very much Charlie for your help.
