The Costa Brava/Catalonia region
Located between the beautiful Garraf Natural Park to the west, Barcelona’s welcoming metropolis to the east and the warm waters of the Mediterranean to the south, Castelldefels' privileged setting offers the ultimate beach-and-city holiday. Casa Castelledefels is just a few steps from the longest and widest stretch of golden-sand beach in the Barcelona area. At the same time, it is only a 20-minute drive (or taxi ride) to the bustle and energy of Barcelona city centre, with all the art, architecture, style and warm welcome that its regular visitors have come to know and love. With no great rush, you can enjoy Gaudi, Picasso, Miro, or the FC Barcelona museum in the morning, lunch a la "Vicky, Cristina Barcelona", and still be back on Castelldefels beach for the best of the afternoon sun.
The Castelldefels Beach area has a predominantly Spanish and Catalan feel, with Barcelona residents dining out here weekdays and weekends throughout the year. There are some 20 restaurants, both traditional and modern, within 10 minutes' walk of the property. At the top end, several of these rival Barcelona's finest establishments. In the mid-range, there are plenty of family-run restaurants serving the typical "Menu del Dia", tapas and pinchos. Along the Paseo Maritimo, there are a dozen permenant beach bars/restaurants serving all the local specialities. The Beach has won Blue Flag status in 2009 for the fourth year straight, and Q Quality and Cleanliness rating for the third consecutive season. The Blue Flag designation is from Spain's Consumer Association, and the Q rating comes from central government inspections, specifically the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce.
There is a local mini-market within a couple of minutes' walk for all the necessary items.
Barcelona / Castelldefels area
Castelldefels has a busy cultural agenda, featuring the annual Festival of Spanish Dance, New Mood Jazz Festival, a Classic Car Rally as well as the time-honoured local “fiestas” throughout the calendar. These include The Night of San Juan on 24 June, famous for fireworks and bonfires to banish evil spirits, the “Fiesta del Mar on 19-20 July, when the Virgin Mary is borne ashore by the local fishermen; and of course the Fiesta Mayor 13-17 August, comemorating the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
Castelldefels town centre has a lively commercial atmosphere, with dozens of boutique shops, delicatessens, bars and restaurants. There is also a major Shopping Mall, "Anec Blau", home to all the all the main High Street store brands, both Spanish and International.
On the sporting front, there are two sailing clubs for windsurfing, kite-surfing and traditional sailing for all levels. In addition, Port Ginesta, the local yachting marina, offers more adventurous sailing and deep sea-fishing trips. There is also golf and horse-riding available nearby, as well as mountain-biking and hill-walking in the Garraf Natural Park.
For those taking tennis seriously, there are several top-flight tennis academies both for adults and children within a few minutes drive of the property.
For rowing enthusiasts, Castelldefels is home to the rowing lake built for the 1992 Olympic Games, still thriving and well-maintained complete with its TV Tower and Grandstand. The lake is also used for windsurfing and waterski-ing.
Casa Castelldefels is also conveniently located for all the major national and international trade shows and congresses held at Barcelona's Fira Exhibition Centre, about 15 minutes drive away. The major events in the latter part of 2009 include: Expohogar 19-21 Sept; Sonimag & Multimedia 7-11 Oct; Caravaning Outlet 9-11 Oct; Piscina BCN 20-23 Oct; Barcelona Meeting Point 27 Oct - 1 Nov; BNF 2009 29-31 Oct; Magic International 6-8 Nov; ExpoMiner 6-8 Nov; the Salon Nautico (Boat Show) 7 - 15 Nov; Bodas & Bodas 14-15 Nov; Salon Hobby 27-29 Nov; Ocasion 2009 28 Nov - 6 Dec; EIBTM Global Business Events & Hotel Congress 1-3 Dec; Auto Retro 4-8 Dec. Above this, the penthouse level is reserved exclusively for the master bedroom and en-suite bathroom, with french windows leading to a large sun terrace.
Further details outdoors: From the master bedroom terrace at penthouse level, a spiral staircase leads to a solarium offering magnificent 360-degree views south across the Mediterranean Sea and west toward the Garraf Natural Park. El Garraf's 300-400m peaks rise dramatically from sea-level, providing a stunning backdrop to Castelldefels town and its Medieval Castle.
While a car is not necessary to enjoy the numerous amenities in and around Castelldefels beach and the Paseo Maritimo, private transport would be useful for those intending to explore further afield. This could be simply shuttling to and from Barcelona city centre or touring the neighbouring coastline (Sitges, Vilanova etc..). Inland there, is limitless scope to explore upcountry to the vinyards of El Penedes (fine Catalan reds and whites), El Priorat (one of Spain's least-known but highest-prized wine regions) and Sant Sadurni (the home of Cava).
A garage for secure car-parking is located in the basement, with direct access down a flight of stairs from the entrance hall. The garage level has two electric gates leading to street access.
