In Short: historical, trendy but not overly touristy district to the right of the Gothic quarter.
Highlights: the beautiful basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, the Picasso Museum at close quarters, hanging out in Ciutadella Park and trying not to fall into the water on the boating lake.
Getting around: metro stops of Jaume 1, on Via Laietana, Arc de Triomf, near the top, and Barceloneta to the south. You're also close to one of the city's main train stations - the Estació de França. It's about a quarter of an hour walk to the Ramblas.
Why stay: very centrally located, unique shopping options, atmospheric streets, good range of bars and eateries. Plus Javier Bardem recommends it.
Description: On the opposite side of Barcelonas Gothic quarter, separated by Via Laietana, is the barrio of Born. Although its similar in many ways to its Gothic neighbour, it doesnt draw the same number of tourists. Since the 1980s it has provided a focal point for the city´s artistic scene and now boasts some of the highest property prices in the city like many other parts of Barcelona it has moved on substantially from its down-at-heel roots to attain such desirability. Attractions in this area streets are everywhere the opulent Modernisme of the Palau de la Música, the post-modern Mercat de Santa Caterina, and the Gothic splendour of the basilica Santa Maria del Mar are all within 10 minutes walk of each other. The area is also home to the acclaimed Picasso museum. Another advantage is being located right next to Parc de la Ciutadella, where you can get a break from the narrow streets of the old town. Born is right in the centre of Barcelona and as a result it provides a well-placed and characterful base from which to explore the rest of the city.
