About this location
The Catalunia region
In Short: diamond-in-the-rough whose reputation precedes it. Very central district but you might want to steer clear of certain streets.
Highlights: the modern art museum MACBA, a whole host of bars and clubs, the oldest church in Barcelona (Sant Pau del Camp) and the Gaudí-designed Güell Palace.
Getting around: the metro is your best friend in this neighbourhood. Plus, the Raval is right next to the Ramblas, the old port and Plaça Catalunya, so exploring on foot is another option.
Why stay: to be based in the city centre, to experience the grittier side of Barcelona, to take advantage of the jumping nightlife.
Description: The Raval is Barcelona´s hectic, noisy, and sometimes seedy melting pot. Once notorious as the citys red light district, its still in the process of being gentrified, albeit at a slightly slower pace than other parts of Barcelonas old town. In keeping with its edgy reputation Raval has plenty to offer when it comes to nightlife and offers an eclectic mix of places to eat reflecting the areas multicultural nature. The area abounds with visitor attractions such has the Maritime Museum, MACBA, Palau Güell and the little- known Església de Sant Pau del Camp, which is Barcelonas oldest church. It has good access to several metro stops and its central location puts many of the citys most famous sights within walking distance.
