The Costa Brava/Catalonia region
Best known apart from the capital, Barcelona, is of course the Mediterranean coast, Costa Brava, with ample beaches and mild climate, doubtlessly a first rate touristical attraction. Catalonia also offers high mountain ranges, the Pyrenees in the north, the curious formations of Montserrat, the inactive volcanoes of Garrotxa, and a wide plain area in the region's centre.
Catalonia has a very marked culture of its own, most evidently of Mediterranean tradition, and is distinguished of most other Spanish regions in several aspects, not at least by its language, Catalonian (although everybody speaks and understands Castilian Spanish perfectly). Certainly it is one of the most cosmopolitan places in Spain, thanks to its long tradition of international commerce.
The coast offers ideal facilities for all sorts of water sports, but everywhere you will realize about that special talent to combine the beauty of nature or monuments with modern attractions, a main reason why Catalonia developed into one of the preferred touristical destinations.
Catalonia's excellent gastronomy is characterized by seafood, rice dishes, wines of great international reputation, and traditional desserts like the famous "Catalonian Cream".
As many other European regions, Barcelona has well defined seasons in which temperatures and general weather are fairly predictable. Being a coast city, the relative humidity level is very high, always around 70%.
The warmest season is between June to August, with temperatures that sometimes can go higher than 30 degrees (Celsius), perfect for a holiday close to the sea. Enjoy the beaches and pools, walk the city wearing light clothing or just relax and have a cold drink at the various terraces available in the city.
Barcelona / Gothic Quarter area
Barcelona's 'Barri Gótic' or Gothic Quarter, is perhaps the most original area of the city since its buildings show a wide variety of sculptures and monuments that correspond to different time periods making it an area which has undergone changes through time. Hence, it is not strange to find a 10th century building nearby a contemporary sculpture. The contrast between modern and history gives this area a special charm.
The heart of Barcelona's old quarter, Sant Jaume Square, is where you'll find the main political institutions; the City Hall and the Generalitat buildings, located opposite each other. This is an open and large square which leads to the main streets of the Roman city. From there, you can take a stroll and get lost in the precious side streets of the old quarter. You will find such squares as Sant Felip Neri, small and charming, or the most concurred and emblematic Plaza del Pi that deserves a lot of visits for its beauty and environment. Here, you can experience the typical atmosphere of the town, with all walks of life including street musicians, artists, picturesque bars and terraces, along with design stores and avant-guarde fashion in the Ferran and Aviñó streets.
Passing by Ferran street, you'll arrive to Plaza Real, one of the squares with more traditions and tourist interest in the city. Here, you'll find a mix of people, locals and tourists alike. There are many bars of various styles where you can have a drink and tapas under pretty arches, very characteristic of this square, where we also discover the presence of some original modernist lanterns, a work of Antoni Gaudí.
Just off Las Ramblas is the Boquería market which is not similar to any market in Barcelona. Actually this impressive modernist style building located in Las Ramblas, has been converted not only into a place where the Barcelonians go to buy fresh products, but also one of the main tourist attractions of the city without losing its charm. Take a stroll inside as it is an authentic pleasure for the senses. All kinds of food can be found here: fruits, vegetables, fish, exotic specialities and an infinity of surprises. It is worth discovering it by yourself.
