About this location
The Catalunia region
In Short: mountain to the south of the city centre, bordered by several residential areas. Site of the 1992 Olympic Games.
Highlights: the evening's Magic Fountain display, climbing over canons at the Castle, smelling the roses in the various gorgeous gardens.
Getting around: the vertiginous cable car up to the Castle, some very handy escalators, good old-fashioned walking boots, or a horse-drawn carriage for two.
Why stay: easy access to superb parks, gardens and museums, not to mention breathtaking views over the city.
Description: Two major events in Barcelonas history the International Exposition in 1929 and the Olympic Games in 1992 have turned Montjuïc into a vast open-air museum dotted with stadia, art galleries and sculptures. A large hilly area to the south of the city, Montjuïcs strategic position saw it used a the site of Barcelonas Castle, which is now open for visitors to wander around and cosy up to canons overlooking its western slopes. Whether youre taking in the Olympic legacy or relaxing in one of its lush gardens, this is a great area if youre seeking an antidote to Barcelonas often claustrophobic streets. However for food, drink and shopping, nearby areas such as Poble Sec, Sants and Sant Antoni clearly have more to offer. Plaça de Espanya at the foot of Montjuïc is a good place to start looking and also has excellent transport links.
