The Costa Brava/Catalonia/Barcelona region
Catalonia has a wide diversity and variety of sceneries, from the Mediterranean beaches to the high Pyrenean mountains; a rich historical, cultural and artistic heritage capable of arousing the most demanding of people; world leading cuisine and many other opportunities and amusements of all kinds that will allow you to get the most out of your holidays.
At the forefront of Catalonia, Barcelona offers you the best of a Mediterranean city facing the sea, a city that combines: tradition with modernity; an ancient quarter with over 2000 years of history with new districts that have become a benchmark of world architecture and urban development; the hustle and bustle of the shopping axes with the peacefulness of strolls by the sea; museums and culture in every district with one of the best football teams in history, and many other attractions and charms that we encourage you to discover.
However, beyond the capital, in Catalonia we have been fortunate that every stage of history has left its stamp on some part of our province. In the Berguedá region you can discover more than 3000 dinosaur footprints, in the Tarragones region the Roman mausoleum of Centelles, and there are numerous mediaeval castles throughout the area.
But beyond the beaches, the monuments, the most famous places and everything to be found in the tourist guides, we recommend to take a trip to our villages and towns, to enjoy the numerous summer festivals, to satisfy your taste for calçotades, grilled sadines, the cuisine of the sea and the mountains and to discover tastes, flavours and aromas that you will love.
We hope that your visit to Catalonia does but whet your appetite, that your stay among us is pleasant and profitable and that you return home looking forward to the time when you will come back.
El Garraf is a small area full of curiosities. Geology has given us a massif that deserves to be discovered and history has made it a place brimming with treasures worth getting to know. The Mediterranean embraces the coast from Cubellas, a family tourism town, to Port Ginesta, and offers nautical sports, thanks to the yacht harbours, or recreation in the beach. Sitges conserves the spirit of Catalan Art Nouveau, thanks to the legacy of Santiago Rusiñol, and Vilanova I la Geltru preserves the work of Victor Balaguer, one of the outstanding men of contemporary Catalonia.
As well as the geography, history and art, the small but varied area of El Garraf - sea, mountain, sand and vineyards, gastronomy and wine – offers the finest services and infrastructures to welcome visitors.
Beaches, hotels, restaurants, apartments, bars, nightlife, nature centres and secluded landscapes wait to delight you. Canyelles and OLIVELLA are small inland towns where serenity contrasts with the more bustling life of the coastal towns. In the middle of the area, San Pedro de Ribas also offers the possibility of enjoying rural tourism.
El Garraf, sea and mountains, near Barcelona but far from the indomitable roar of the capital, will provide you with pleasant stays which stimulate the senses. You only need to come with an open spirit and a desire to discover.
A WALK THROUGH OLIVELLA
OLIVELLA is located in the north of the area, in the midst of El Garraf Park. This is exactly what confers on Olivella its own landscape beauty. The village comprises Olivella, several farmhouses and six housing estates.
Before arriving at the village, by the BV-2111, there is already a magnificent example of rural architecture: Can Suriol, a typical Catalan farmhouse, formed by a “mother” farmhouse, around which other farmhouses were gradually added. Of the initial settlement there is documentation dating to 1334. Today the farmhouse is an 18th century building which is impressive for its two exterior galleries with semi-circular arches.
Walking around the old centre of Olivella is undoubtedly a gratifying experience. Upon arrival you find plaça Major, location of the town hall and La Sala Information Centre, where you can obtain information about the El Garraf Park and Olivella in general, and from where guided tours begin to discover the most picturesque corners of the village. From this spot you can see the first settlement of the village located on the hill, Puig Molí. This settlement comprised a church, castle, and the rectory: the castle known as Castell Vell was constructed in the year 992 following a clear strategic plan during the “Reconquest”. Today there is a mill build in the 18th century on the ruins of the castle. Very close to the Castle Vell, are the ruins of the church called Eglésia Vella (13th century), the only example of Romanesque architecture in the area. It formed part of the old castle of Olivella and was in use until the 16th century as a parish church. From here you can enjoy a privileged view of the village, but it is difficult to reach and the path is not marked.
Trough carrer Major you reach the parish church of Sant Pere I Sant Feliu, build in 1430 on the remains of the castle known as Castle Nou and restructured in the 17th century. After visiting the church, it is wandering through the narrow streets of Olivella before branching out to discover its surroundings.
Farmhouse Can Grau , this farmhouse is available for short-term stays and to undertake activities to widen knowledge of the natural environment of El Garraf.
