The Costa Brava/Catalonia/Barcelona region

Best known apart from the capital, Barcelona, is of course the Mediterranean coast, Costa Brava an Costa Dorada, with ample beaches and mild climate, doubtlessly a first rate tourist attraction.

One shouldn't forget anyhow that Catalonia offers as well high mountain ranges, the Pyrenees in the north, the curious formations of Montserrat, the inactive volcanoes of Garrotxa, and a wide plain area in the region's center.

Catalonia has a very marked culture of its own, most evidently of Mediterranean tradition, and is distinguished of most other Spanish regions in several aspects, not at least by its language, Catalan (although everybody speaks and understands Castilian Spanish perfectly). Certainly it is one of the most cosmopolitan places in Spain, thanks to its long tradition of international commerce.

The coast offers ideal facilities for all sorts of water sports, but everywhere you will realize about that special talent to combine the beauty of nature or monuments with modern attractions, a main reason why Catalonia developed into one of the preferred tourist destinations. Catalonia's excellent gastronomy is characterized by seafood, rice dishes, wines of great international reputation and traditional desserts like the famous "Crema Catalana".

Major attractions:

Barcelona

Catalonia's capital, located at the Mediterranean Sea, offers the structures of a true metropole. Among its most outstanding sights are the Gothic Quarter and the works of architect Antoni Gaudi.

Costa Brava

Certainly one of the most famous Spanish coasts, stretching from the north of Barcelona over the province of Girona. It is of great natural beauty, with steep cliffs and romantic small coves.

Girona

A beautiful historic city with the old Jewish Quarter among its major sights.

Figueres

The birthplace of great painter Salvador Dali. Its main attraction is of course the museum Foto dedicated to the artist, showing a collection of some of his finest works Foto.

Costa Dorada

The Golden Coast, stretching from south of Costa del Garraf to Costa del Azahar, offers apart from its great beaches and beautiful landscapes towns of outstanding beauty.

Tarragona

An important city of the Roman empire, still preserving outstanding monuments: the aquaeductus, an amphitheater and the Tomb of the Scipios, located at the seaside. Close to Tarragona there are the monasteries Santes Creus and Santa Maria de Poblet, both of high historic-artistic interest.

Lleida (Lerida)

Located inland in a mountainous area. Most interesting is its cathedral, "Seo", built between 12th and 15th century.

Barcelona

Barcelona has the dynamic and open personality so typical of Mediterranean cities. It is the perfect city to relax in, stroll around and eIn Barcelona, and throughout Catalonia, there are two official languages: Catalan, the language of the Catalans, and Spanish, the official language of Spain. The sea breezes mean that Barcelona enjoys a pleasant climate.

As in most European countries and also in Catalonia, GMT is the time system used in Barcelona. Clocks are one hour ahead of GMT in winter and two in summer and are adjusted twice a year, going forward one hour in winter and back an hour in summer. Barcelona has its own way of life which makes it unique.

Barceloneta

Barcelona is frequently mentioned as one of the 'World's Best Cities to Live in, and there are countless reasons why: it's cosmopolitan, artistic, architecturally sophisticated, is home to the world's best culinary masters and to the world's best football team.

But to top it all, Barcelona is a city with a beach. Not many of Europe's top city destinations can boast a beach. But Barcelona, situated on the Mediterranean Costa Brava in Catalonia, is one of them.

There are over four kilometres of golden sandy beaches in Barcelona, La Barceloneta, or Little Barcelona, in the Ciutat Vella district, is the main beach and also a triangular residential and commercial district which leads away from the beach and port.

The local neighbourhood

Barceloneta is a fascinating ravel of corridor style streets and alleys, where you can find some superb bars and restaurants. It's also not your typical touristic area, so you can lose yourself in the lifestyle of the local residents of La Barceloneta.

The district reaches from the old harbour and the new Port Vell, across to the beach of the same name and there reaches up towards the city centre in a triangular point.

The residential district was originally built to provide accommodation to inhabitants of La Ribera who had lost their homes when the construction of citadel took place. Later it was home to local fishermen and metal workers.

During the urban renewal of Barcelona in preparation for the hugely successful Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992, the district of Barceloneta was cleaned up and revitalised and now has a vibrant village feel.

Barceloneta Beach:

Barceloneta Beach is situated around 15 minutes way from Las Ramblas; it's a popular beach and can get pretty busy during holiday time. In which case, head to the next beach along, Icaria Beach, which is a little more laid-back.

The 1100 metre stretch of beach offers a myriad of sports and leisure activities. There are heaps of services for all the family including showers, public toilets, children's games area, boat hire, parasols, ice cream and refreshments kiosks and more.

Eating out in Barceloneta

Visitors and residents of Barcelona head to Barceloneta to eat tapas, seafood and enjoy an evening drink by the beach. It's also a favourite spot for Sunday lunch.

Climate

Barceloneta enjoys a mild temperate and Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters.
