About this location
The Catalunia region
Poble-sec is a privileged area in the city due to its physical location: it is at the foot of Montjuïc Mountain, right by the port and the old town of Barcelona. The famous Las Rambas are at approximately 10 minutes walking distance; the two central squares Plaza Cataluña and Plaza España are also pretty close. This district began to be populated in the second half of the nineteenth century after the walls of Barcelona were demolished and Eixample plan was approved. Nowadays Poble-Sec represents a safe, residential area which also has enough entertainment to offer, including popular bars, theaters and even nightclubs.
The central avenue of this district is Parallel, which part of the picturesque Plaza España to the World Trade Centre located at the end of the harbor. It is a busy avenue during the day, but quiet at night, really good option if you want a central location but away from the tour groups usually staying in more central areas. Both sides of the Parallel are covered by a number of restaurants and cafes, and several beautiful buildings of modernist style. It is famous for its numerous theatres: El Molino, Apolo, Victoria, Tantarantana, Condal, etc. Being a residential area, has all the amenities and services, from pharmacies to supermarkets and even municipal market Sant Antoni, one of the oldest food markets in Barcelona.
There's nothing better than losing yourself in the streets of Poble-sec, where you can still find the calm, authentic atmosphere of the past, have a glass of wine in one of the bars, wander along the streets Magalhaes, Concòrdia, Margarit and Carrer de Blai, which is for pedestrians only, and cross the district, or have some tapas in a tavern, like the small bar Quimet & Quimet, Can Eusebi, Rincon del Pintor etc.
Montjuic Mountain is the greenest area of the city, a mountain full of parks and gardens which was the centre for the International Exhibition of 1929 and the 1992 Olympic Games. On the top of the mountain there is the castle built in the eighteenth century as a strategic defense point of the city. From the castle you can enjoy nice views over the harbor and other parts of Barcelona. There are several museums in the area: Olympic Museum, Joan Miró Foundation, Ethnology Museum, Archeology Museum etc, the huge concert hall Palau Sant Jordi is also located here. Among the highlights on Montjuic it's important to emphasize The Botanic Gardens and Joan Brossa Gardens with thousands of aquatic, tropical, desert plants and trees.
Poble Sec district is reachable by public buses and underground (Line 2, stop Parallel; Line 3, stop Poble Sec).
