The Istria region
Just to the east of Italy (for many years a part of Italy), Istria or Istra as it is known locally (now a part of Croatia again), is only 3 hours drive from historic Venice and around an hour from either Trieste or Ljublijana airports.
It is a small peninsula - just over 1000 square miles (no larger than an English county) - nestling in the crystal clear Adriatic Sea. It boasts mile upon mile of clean, quiet beaches, unspoilt countryside and woodland, with dramatic mountain ranges, (the highest, Mount Ucka, is 4600 ft) supplying a backdrop to the inland plateaus and small scale Mediterranean farmsteads, historic walled towns, unbelievably friendly people, (many of whom have English as their second language) and an un-ending supply of fresh olives, fish, cheese, meats, truffles and wine. From your house you will be able to reach all parts of Istra in less than an hour. In fact you will be driving to Porec, Rovinj, Pazin all within half an hour, Pula, Zminj, Vodnjan, Labin, in 20 mins. This is very centrally located and yet feels so 'in the middle of nowhere' because of the peace and quiet. Krnicka Poret, regarded by the locals as the best beaches, is just ten mins drive and is fabulous. In fact the location is perfect...yes we are biased but come and see for yourselves!
Barban / Glavani area
Glavani is traditional Istrian farming village situated 20 kms (a 20-25 minute drive) northeast of Pula - the historic 'capital' of Istria - and around 8 kms (a 10 min drive) from the sea. It is located in unspoilt countryside, with meadow and woodland criss-crossed with paths ideal for walking or trekking. Barban (6 kms from Glavani) is a small medieval town located some 25kms northeast of Pula and around 10kms from the sea. Features include the 15th century church and two 15th century gates, one of which opens onto the main square where regular markets and music festivals are held. The town has recently revived the ancient festival of Prstinac (the Ring) where horse riding competitors in traditional costume attempt to spear metal rings with their lances. The facilities in the town itself include two Markets, a butchers, a bakers, a Post Office, a small bank, a chemist, a hardware store and two Bar/Restaurants. Outdoor markets are held weekly.
How to get there

Outside the summer months and for cheaper options, Ryanair fly to Trieste in N Italy and Easyjet fly to Ljublijana in Slovenia and Rijeka. these are less than 2 hours drive from istria and cheap car hire is available from Hertz or Sixt.

Guestbook
Sue and Nigel, Just a quick note to thank you again for your wonderful hospitality. Should you need a reference for a potential guest, please don't hisitate to point him or her my way. To whom it may concern...you could not ask for a nicer lodging or finer hosts. My suggestion...ask them about a meal prepared by their neighbor. John Trotti Friends and I just had a most delightful stay with Susan and Nigel. We felt so welcomed and comfortable. We had beautifully furnished rooms and a well stocked kitchen. They were helpful with information about tourist spots but mostly gracious hosts. They even arranged a beautiful catered supper prepared by a terrific cook neighbor. I look forward to my next visit. Karen Drown www.Greentreeranch@verizon.net I can thoroughly recommend Hisa Suzannah and the property that we stayed at in 2005 (Apartment Uckar) in Barban. if the other properties on Istra-Zivot's books are of comparable standard then have no qualms about booking, but I have to repeat that Hisa Suzannah is the tops. We are already making plans for a further holiday in 2007. Janice & Charlie Ashbrook
