About this location
The Calabria region
Calabria is located in the southwest of Italy (the toe of the Italian boot) and is rich in history and culture. It has a variety of different landscapes, from the stunning coastal areas, with craggy cliffs set against the clear blue seas, to a mountainous inland, dotted with traditional villages, and even a small ski resort. Owing to it's southerly location the region has a hot, sunny climate for most of the year. Drive through the small villages and towns with their typically Italian architecture and numerous churches, museums or explore the lovely beaches along the coastline. The region is mainly rural and produces fruit, vegetables and local wines which can be purchased cheaply. The nearby harbours provide fresh fish for the local restaurants which you can enjoy.
The region of Calabria is flanked by both the Tyrrenian Sea on the western side and the Ionian Sea on the eastern side. The major resorts in Calabria include Scalea, and Tropea, one of the most beautiful towns with numerous sandy bays. Amantea and Diamante are also popular resorts. The capital of the region, and it;s largest town, is Reggio di Calabria which is very close to Sicily.
Tropea is a town in the Vibo Valentia province of Calabria, and is well known for its miles of white sandy beaches. There is a Blues festival in the centre of Tropea towards the end of August with live bands playing in the open air late into the evening. Tropea dates back to the 17th century with cobbled narrow streets, charming cafes and geletaria's, with fashion shops speckled along the winding streets.
The Sunday Times rated Tropea as number one in it's 'Top 20 Beaches' report in January 2007.
There are also mini cruises to the Aelian Isles which depart from the port of Tropea / Capo Vaticano and can include a trip to the volcanic island of Stromboli.
Pizzo is another beautiful town with it's marina and is famous for its tartufo, a special delicious kind of ice cream festival in Pizzo every August. A visit to Enrico's, situated in Marinella, is a must for all ice cream lovers.
Slightly inland is the commercial centre of Vibo Valentia with its new shopping centre comprising of a large food court with a selection of various dishes, hot and cold drinks, a pharmacy, Vodafone, Zara and Benetton for kids, Euronics for electrical goods, and a large Spar for all provisions. There are also a number of ladies / gents fashion shops and jewellers.
Over the centuries Ricadi has been populated by Greeks, Romans, and Normans. For a time Ricadi was ancilliary to the town of Tropea. Grotticelle became populated by people who lived on agriculture and in the mid 80's this place became one of the main economic driving forces for the overall economy of Ricadi.
The 'Red Onion Festival', La Sagra della Cipolla Rossa' occurs every year on the 13th August in the main square of the village.
There are local markets on various days all around the areas of Ricadi, Santa Domenica, Tropea and Pizzo which offer all types of goods to buy. There is a very large supermarket for provisions between San Nicola and Santa Domenica which is only approx 10 mins drive away.
There are various water sports available at the nearby beaches and also excursions from the marina at Tropea or Pizzo to a number of islands including the active volcanic island of Stromboli which shows a display of the lava at night. It is possible to also visit Sicily by boat.
Other activities include cycling and horse riding. Alternatively, if you prefer sunbathing and swimming then there are plenty of beaches to visit all along the coastline.
