About the home
The House is terraced and situated on a headland between Banyuls and Les Elmes. Downstairs there is a small kitchen, stairs to upper floor, WC and an open plan living dining area. There is guaranteed private parking to the front and a south facing terrace to the rear. Upstairs, there is a double bedroom, a shower room and a twin bedroom. House is 50sq m plus outside terrace.
The town of Banyuls sur Mer is located on the foothills of the Pyrenees where the mountains meet the Mediterranean sea. The House is located on top of a headland between Banyuls Town Centre and Beach and Les Elmes Beach. It is a short (downhill) walk to the bars, restaurants, shops, entertainment and beach facilities of Banyuls Town and to Banyuls Railway Station. Banyuls beach is stony in places while Les Elmes is more sandy. Both beaches are supervised by lifeguards in the summer season. The water clarity can be excellent and snorkelling is recommended. If you bring some bread into the water you will soon be surrounded by lots of small hungry fish. Banyuls offers mountain walking and beaches mixed with some excellent beachside bars and restaurants. The area of the Languedoc has a fascinating history with Cathar castles reasonably accessible in the mountains.

The Côte Vermeille or the “Vermilion Coast” is an ideal location to explore the mountains of the Pyrénées and the Mediterranean coast. The coastline is rugged and impressive with many small bays and medieval villages and towns nestled in the hillside. The area (especially Collioure) has always been popular with artists such as Henri Matisse and many others. The hillsides are covered with vines which produce the excellent red Collioure wine and Banyuls “vin doux” - .which was (apparently) first made by the Knights Templar in the Middle Ages, The area is Catalan which has it’s own identity and culture as well as being a mixture of Spanish and French. This was the region of the Cathars and the area is dotted with medieval castles and steeped with history.
The Banyuls sur Mer area
Banyuls has the benefit of a Mediterranean climate. The summers are hot, 35° C plus and in the winter, it rarely drops below freezing. Most of the rainfall is in the winter and spring with the better weather during May through to October. There can be some spectacular thunderstorms in the summer occasionally accompanied by very heavy rain. However this soon dries out and it's usually back to glorious sunshine. There can be storms in the mountains where the clouds "dissolve" as they reach the sea air. In the spring time the air is scented with jasmine and the flowers from the lemon and lime trees and in the summer bougainvillea hangs from the houses and "Belle de Nuit" scents the night air. In the spring and early summer the cactus plants are in flower and the "garrigue" brings a display of wild flowers, wild thyme and small lavenders to the hillsides. In later summer the hillsides are parched and dry in the heat of the sun. Oleanders flower throughout the summer and at the roadsides where they are planted there is a blaze of colour.
Banyuls is a reasonably short drive or train ride to Port Bou in Spain, where there are onward connections to Barcelona and beyond. Despite being only a short distance away, the Spanish feel is very evident and it is a good place to shop and eat. Fuel, cigarettes and alcohol are much cheaper in Spain than in France or the UK.
In Winter, the ski resorts of Pyrenees 2000 and Font Romeu are approx 2 hours drive away. Ski season is January to March
