The Languedoc region offers a variety of attractions- a sunny climate, on average 300 days of sunshine a year, vast sandy beaches, secret rocky inlets and a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle. Inland the landscape consists of wild rocky gorges, France's oldest vineyards, abundant orchards and market gardens, old villages, Cathar castles, and , inland from Roman Narbonne the magnificent fortress of Carcassonne. The capital, Perpignan along with Nimes and Montpellier offer good shopping and varied cultural attractions.
Banyuls sur Mer area
Banyuls is famous for three things- it's wine, it's artistic heritage and it's important marine life. It is situated at the extreme southern end of the Cote Vermeille amid the last foothills of the Pyrenees. The underwater marine reserve, the first protected zone of it's type in the entire Mediterranean ensures crystal clear waters for magical snorkeling, and for those who prefer to keep their feet dry, a visit to the aquarium where there are more than 50 tanks of fish and invertebrates ranging from the exotic to the unbelievable. Due to it's unique position Banyuls has a rich and varied history. The sleepy town was the birthplace of the world renowned sculptor Aristide Maillol [1861-1944] whose works can be seen in the town and at the nearby museum. Nearby Collioure was the centre for Matisse and where the artists of the Fauvist movement first nurtured and developed their new ideas. From Banyuls the famous Transpyrenean footpath GR10 begins it's spectacular journey towards the Atlantic coast. There are walks to suit all abilities, including routes through the vineyards or longer treks with stopovers in hostels. The little town of Port Bou is just 20 minutes away over the Spanish border where you can sit and enjoy tapas and Sangria overlooking the beach, or stock up the drinks cabinet from the local shops.
