Mas Dalt - luxury 17 bedrooms!
About the home
Mas Dalt is another fantastic villa offered in exclusivity by Charlie and Maria at villasbarcelona since 1998. This house is time-tested and true, and all rentals come with a full copy of our 90-page local Guidebook, so that you get the most from your holiday.
At last a property where you can really say "the more the merrier!". Mas Dalt is unique. Situated on a huge 15-hectaire (over 37 acres) hillside wooded property with great views, Mas Dalt offer 17 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms in three different fully independent living quarters, each with its own full kitchen, fireplace and TV living room, BBQed terrace, etc. For extra large groups, keep in mind that 12-bedroom Can Tapies is only a 10-minute walk away. Situated 4 kms east of Banyoles, about half an hour in from the coast, this is an ideal area for holiday-makers. Can Tapies sleeps around 30 guests plus a few small kids.
The owners live in a similarly splendid mansion 2 kilometers away. They employ three local ladies to clean the house between rentals, and these same ladies are available to work for you, whether it be extra cleaning help, or to go shopping and cook and prepare excellent meals. Their extensive menus of home cooked Catalan roots cuisine are getting excellent reviews!

General Proceedures
1) Deposits:
The standard method for making a reservation is by paying a deposit of 25%, usually directly to the owner´s bank account. This deposit is to guard against no-shows, and the amount received is deducted from the total cost of the rental. The remaining 75% is due either prepaid well ahead of your arrival or in cash upon occupying the property (you will be met at the property by the owners or caretaker).
There are many ways to make the deposit. By far the most common method is by Electronic Bank Transfer, and most of you will simply make a transfer from you online banking account, but in some cases I can make a charge on your VISA or Mastercard or you can send a Certified Bankers Cheque directly to the owners. I describe these methods in detail in email 2 of 3 on deposits. You decide which method is best for you, or feel free to come up with your own method. European Union bank account holders will want to send bank transfers as there are now absolutely free charges and commissions between EMU countries, EU regulation 2,560/2001 which came into effect July 2002.
2) Price all inclusive and changeover times
Rental fees quoted in our website are all-inclusive and there are no extra or hidden charges of any kind. All properties are rented clean, with plenty of clean sheets and towels and kitchen linen, etc., as well as your usual cooking utensils, and in many cases some basic start-up foodstuffs, like salt and pepper and olive oil, vinegar, coffee, etc. is there upon arrival. Some houses offer more generous welcome packages of food and drink. Those who rent for two weeks get a house cleaning and sheet and towel and linen change at the end of the first week included in the rental. Additional maid service is available upon request (usually at about 10 to 12 Euros per hour, minimum 3 hours). You are kindly requested to leave the house pretty much as you found it at the end of your stay.
There is no damage deposit. We trust you to contact me or the owners if something is broken so that we can fix or replace it before the next guests come in.
In the summer high season, most properties try to not to lose a day between rentals, and rentals are back to back, so incoming guests are kindly requested to occupy the house in the afternoon starting as of 5 pm and depart relatively early on the last day, usually before 10 am, so as to give time for a thorough cleaning between rentals. This is standard everywhere in the villa rental business. If you want to show up early, please check with me first. We can try to arrange for you to leave your things somewhere safe in the house and come back later when the cleaning crew has finished. Do not go into the house and please stay out of the way of the cleaners, gardeners, and pool maintenence staff or they might not finish their jobs! I get a lot of complaints from owners about guests who show up early and interrupt the cleaning. If you are arriving late in the day when shops are closed at 21:00h or on a Sunday, or on a holiday, I can arrange to have the owners do a shopping for you.
3) Balance due
The balance due for all rentals must be either prepaid well in advance of your rental (see email 2 of 3) or handed over in Euros cash upon arrival and getting the keys for the property from the owners. Payment at the end of the rental is not acceptable. Owners do not want to be in the position of having to chase after their guests for payment. In fact I advise owners not to hand over the keys until they have full payment.
It is up to you to make sure payment in full is made prior to arrival or be prepared to pay in cash upon arrival. Don´t leave this to the last minute as local ATM machines will not give you more 500 Euros per day, and local banks will not accept more than a few hundred Euros worth of traveller´s cheques due to massive fraud in that sector.
While you are here, house owner´s and/or their caretakers are always on hand in case you need them, as am I (Charlie). I'll be sending you an email asking for all your arrival details. Let's work together to make things go smoothly for all concerned. To a large extent, this sector of the "hospitality industry" depends on mutual trust and respect between owners and their guests. I can always be reached so feel free to call me or have the owners call me with any questions you may have, whether it be ahead of arrival, when you are with the owners, or during your stay. My telephone numbers are in the signature below.
Sincerely,
Charlie

The Costa Brava/Catalonia region

What can one say about the Costa Brava?
Often considered a blend of the Côte d'Azur & Tuscany but with a Spanish flair for fun, the Costa Brava is rightfully famous as one of Europe's premiere holiday destinations. Why?
From the breathtakingly beautiful coastline, where wide beaches of golden sand and crystal clear waters alternate with rocky promentories and little coves backed by sheer cliffs topped with pine and oak forests, the Costa Brava boasts 150 blue-flag, top notch beaches. The interior of the Costa Brava is every bit as stunning as the coast (and far less touristy, of course!), with pristine medieval villages set in typically Mediterranean landscapes on the coastal plain, looking very much like Tuscany, and quickly ascending to typically Alpine landscapes as you work your way up into the Pyrenees, with trout-filled streams feeding environmentally protected lakes - like the one in Banyoles - offering a welcome alternative to the coastal beaches, yet only half an hour away by car.
There is always plenty to do. My 90-page guidebook describes 10 routes you can take on daytrips throughout the region. From village to village and including historical sites, recommended beaches, local festivities and folklore, restaurants, market towns, etc -- the guidebook in indispensable for gettting the most of your holiday and steering you clear of the worst tourist-traps in the area. Included are info on the 14 golf courses on the Costa Brava, numerous aquaparks & go-carting circuits, and every town seems to have a horseback-riding club & bicycle rental.
... but of course the main reason for coming to this part of the world is for the good weather, the laid back and friendly local atmosphere, and the excellent and very affordable food and drink. My guidebook explains local dishes, recommends restaurants and cafés, markets and specialty shops, and includes a guide to Spanish wines and cavas. By the way, my favorite local prix fix lunch menus cost about 10 Euros for a 3 or 4 course meal, including wine.
While I am being asked to talk about the Costa Brava, most people enjoy a day trip or two to Barcelona, city center is only one hour away by car or local commuter train. Many guests will also make their way to the Port Aventura amusement park, two hours due south, just off the AP-7 highway, just a few kms from the house. Day trips into Southern France are also recommended, the French border is just a 40-minute drive due north.
When you book your rental villa with me, I will send you a copy of the Guidebook as a .pdf file.
To sum up in one quick phrase, the Province of Girona and Costa Brava is often described as "a quintessentially Mediterranean experience". After only 23 years living here, I couldn't agree more!
The Banyoles / Camos area
Seventeen quick km up the freeway from Girona is the lakeside town of Banyoles, site of the 1992 Olympic rowing events. (If you're not in a rush to get to the lake, turn off the freeway at the signs for Palol, with its ruined castle and a fortified precinct, on this attractive alternate route to Banyoles.) The lake, with a surface of one square km and 8 km perimeter, is unique in the world in that it is fed by the confluence of two subterranean rivers, where 600 liters of water are pumped in per second. Despite some Olympic-related lakeside development, with new hotels and restaurants much in evidence, Banyoles is an attractive place to visit, with a well-kept old town and shaded footpaths around the lake.
Banyoles grew up around a monastery originally founded by Benedictines in 812. Follow Carrer Nou, full of stone mansions, to the Monestir de Sant Esteve at the eastern end of town, still the biggest structure in the old town, with a Gothic retablo of 1437 backing the altar and cloisters containing 12-16C tombs of local Abbots. (Often closed but you can call 57 02 24 to visit.) The streets leading back into the centre of town are full of ancient buildings, including a 12-14C almshouse, Pia Almoina, with a fine 14C cloister, and now site of the Museu Arqueològic Comarcal (350ptas), with its famous jawbone of a pre-Neanderthal man found near the lake), and a good example of 15C industrial architecture, the dye market, la Llotja del Tint, and the 13C church of Santa Maria dels Turers, one of the earliest example of Catalan Gothic with fine stained-glass windows. The Museu Darder d'Història Natural (300ptas) contains the collection of renowned taxidermist Francesc Darder, and the rooms dedicated to Man are controversial, to say the least, for their bizarre collection of human remains. All streets lead to the central Plaça Major, a lovely tree-lined, arcaded square with several cafés and a Wednesday market that had been held here since the eleventh century. The café on the corner with kiddy rides in front, el Café de la Plaça, has delicious sandwiches made with especially soft doughy rolls, named xapata. Ask for a sandwich with the cold-cut of your choice and pa amb tomaquet, which means the bread will be rubbed with tomato and doused with virgin olive oil.

We stayed at Mas Dalt for a week in July 2011, there were 31 of us and we still had 2 empty bedrooms! Its a comfortable well equiped house, it's not fussy with precious antiques, you can relax here. The owners were helpful and polite. The only possible downside is that you cannot have "noise" here after midnight, which can be a litttle difficult with large numbers of guests, we play accoustic quitar and sing without amps or any electric equipment and still it was an issue, which surprised us as the house is in the middle of nowhere, but bylaws have to be observed! This is better than being in a area surrounded by thumping music so all in all I would recommend this house for a peaceful holiday. Just go inside after midnight. The pool is lovely, really comfy beds with nice linen and towels, there are mosquito nets on all the windows and there are 3 kitchens which make catering for large numbers easy. We loved this property, the lake at Banyoles is lovely, Girona is a gorgeous town, well worth a visit. With large groups it can be a very economical way to holiday in total comfort! Response: Thank you so much for that lovely and thoughtful review of Mas Dalt. Just to reassure everyone, there is no midnight noise curfew, and many of our guests enjoy using the pool and other outdoor areas at night - it gets dark very late here in summer! - but we also hope our guests can enjoy a peaceful and tranquil stay in the quiet surroundings. |

Subject: RE: Mas Dalt Oct 1 of last year!
Charlie,
We are a family group of 12 that stayed at Mas Dalt for 9 days in October 2010 and we absolutely loved it. We do a family vacation week in some part of Europe every year and have found some spectacular villas in our travels but nothing even comes close to Mas Dalt.
The property is amazing and the owners (Rosa and Josep and Antonio) were so good to us that we felt most welcome. The villa (really two buildings) sits up in the hills of the owners’ farm in a beautiful treed setting and the view from the elevated pool terrace is gorgeous.
Every one of the 17 bedrooms are perfectly decorated, comfortable and completely equipped as you would expect in a hotel. The property was spotless and the only small problem we had was a WiFi connection that was not working the first day. The owners had this fixed on day 2 and it worked just fine for the rest of our stay.
It is very hard to identify the best attribute of Mas Dalt but our family would rate the huge “cookhouse” very highly. Most evenings we prepared fantastic meals in the brick wood burning BBQ in this huge cookhouse attached to the main building. It was equipped with running water, a giant harvest table and bench seating that accommodated our 12 for dining easily. There are a least 5 well seasoned paella pans to choose from (ranging from about 20” to “giant”) and we made excellent use of them. It is open to the evening air on one end, is constructed of stone and it is a magical place to cook and eat. Don’t overlook it.
Basically, the time we spent at Mas Dalt was so much fun and so perfect that it would be difficult to describe adequately. Given the size and the quality of this property the price is far and away the best bargain in Europe and ranks as our family’s top pick out of all our travels to date.
Thanks for everything Rosa, Josep and Antonio. Thanks Charlie, for making all the arrangements. We will be back no doubt.
P.S. Charlie, I include some of my pictures should you want to use them.
Cheers,
John Bock

Hi Charlie,
Sorry for how late this email is, but we wanted to give you some feedback on our stay in Mas Dalt and Can Tapies in October.
Both houses were absolutely spectacular, we were delighted with the amount of room, the facilities, the design, and of course the beautiful gardens, both of which had a great swimming pool.
The area around the houses was lovely as well, and the view from the terrace of Mas Dalt was spectacular.
The houses were absolutely perfect for a large group gathering, there was more than enough room for everyone and plenty to do.
The location was also great, close enough to Girona that it was easy for some people to fly over just for the weekend, but far enough away from the city to be out in the middle of the countryside, but with a town near enough that shopping for supplies was easy.
Also if you could pass on our thanks to the owners, they were very friendly and extremely helpful all weekend without being in any way intrusive, basically the perfect hosts!
All in all everyone who stayed in the house was blown away by it and we couldn't have been happier with how it all went, we're all already looking forward to returning next year.
Once again thanks for all your help, and of course feel free to put this email up in the review section of your website.
Cheers,
Robin, Ronan, Sarah, Brian and Liz.

Dear Charlie,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, Rosa and the rest of the team for a truly exceptional and memorable holiday. The villas were of the highest standard; impeccably clean, beautifully presented and with lots of charm and character. Rosa and her helpers could not have done more to make us feel welcome and their attentiveness and willingness to help went far beyond our expectations.
We had a brilliant two weeks and we are already planning our return to the villas. I know I speak on behalf of all my Friends and family when I say thank you for such a special and unforgettable holiday that will fill us with happy memories for many years to come.
Please feel free to use any of the above on your website.
Thanks again and we look forward to organising another holiday with you in the future.
Kind regards,

Review of Can Tapies and Mas Dalt- Better late than never!
We stayed at Mas Dalt and Can Tapies in September 2008. It was literally the best three days of my life and although this might sound like an exageration, it really isn´t!! This was partly due to the fact we got married on the Saturday afternoon and spent the rest of the weekend celebrating with friends and family so of course that made it a very magical weekend, but was also due to the beauty of the place, the niceness of Rosa and Josep and the amazing weather. The two houses are amazing- stunning views, beautiful pools and loads of communal space inside and out so you could have a good holiday whatever the weather. All the rooms are clean and nice although some are a bit dark but this is very typical of Spanish houses and actually an advantage on a hot day. Our favourite things from each house were
Mas Dalt
- Massive terrace area for eating and lounging around on.
- brilliant pool with fantastic views
Can Tapies
-has a table tennis table and games room which went down well with everyone,
-huge hall where a large group can sit and eat
-again a beautiful pool and gardens
- 2 BBQs
I would highly recommend both properties. I think they are both ideal for getting a big group together because as I said there is so much communal space. However if you wanted to rent one of the smaller apartments you would have a lot of privacy. The countryside around the villas is stunning and you are only twenty minutes drive from Girona which is gorgeous and 10 from Banyoles which is also very pretty with a beautiful lake.

What a fantastic setting, house, facilities etc. and Rosa was lovely...our spanish being about 10 words, luckily hers and our french was o.k, so we were able to have a good chat about the history of the house etc. Thanks very much for your recommendation and attentive liaisons prior to our departure.
With best wishes,

Dear hosts
We thank you for a wonderful week which we enjoyed at Mas Dalt, a mansion of extreme comfort and excellence and situated in beautiful surroundings. We felt as if we were specially welcome, everything is so well cared for and there are so many beautiful things all around. (So many handmade cloths and even a handmade curtain.)
Well, we are very satisfied with our stay and hope you will be enjoying the rest of the summer season.

Hi Charlie,
Mas Dalt was just beautiful -- beyond anything we could've expected. The owners were completely lovely -- Rosa would eagerly go out of her way to get us any info we needed, or to make us dinner reservations, and in one case drove with us over a half-hour away just to show us where a restaurant was so that we wouldn't get lost. We'd try to assure her that she needn't take so much trouble, but she insisted. She and her son could not have been more accommodating.
One day we hired Rosa to cook a dinner for the entire group (26 people) and it was fabulous! She did all the shopping and made all the arrangements. It was so nice after a day of sightseeing to come back to tables that were all set on the terrace with the beautiful view, and a meal that was all ready for us. The food was truly delicious.
The house was clean and the pool and grounds kept up perfectly.
Thanks for making the arrangements for us last year. We hope to visit Spain again on another holiday at another time, and look forward to speaking with you then if you're still in the business of villa rentals at that time!
Thanks again, Janice

As you know we took our staff away for a long weekend. There was plenty of room and the new building and pool are just superb.
From the very large veranda you can see for miles. You can also walk for miles if you so wish as you seem to have you own forest surrounding you!
We never left the “complex” other than for food and not one on the 18 people that went had a single complaint about anything.
As for Rosa, very helpful when needed. We had one small problem in the villa but once we advised Rosa it was sorted within an hour.
I would definitely recommend this property, especially if you want peace and quiet.
Thanks
Nick

Just a short note following our return from Catalunya to thank you for your assistance in arranging for our stay at Mas Dalt. The masia was ideal and our party of 6 adults and 11 children enjoyed themselves immensely. Rosa was ideal - welcoming yet unobtrusive and available in times of (minor) crises... a self-inflicted crisis - one of my friend's kids locked the keys in the rental car - Rosa knew just who to call!
Whilst I don't make a habit of going back to places I have stayed, this would be high on my list were I to do so.
Thanks again
