Luxury Manor: 12 bedrooms
About the home
Can Tapies offers 3 fully equipped apartments. One apartment has 5 en suite bedrooms, another flat has 3 en suite bedrooms, and the third flat has 4 bedrooms sharing 1 bathroom. It is very important to stress here that these are not 3 apartments crammed into a normal farmhouse. This is a huge patatial mansion, and each apartment is very spacious, with 10 meter high-ceilings in some points. The apartments cannot be rented separately. We rent this house to large groups who want to have holidays together but each group or family has it's own living quarters to come back to after enjoy activities and meals together, both indoors and outdoors.
Each apartment is very generously proportioned, with fully equipped kitchen, living/dining room, large rooms, private terraces, each flat set well apart from one another. There is a new 100m2 playroom with billiard, ping pong, and babyfoot. The 12x5m swimming pool is set on a terrace just below the house next to a football pitch with goalposts. The views throughout are great! Perfect for larger groups but priced for smaller groups who might just want a little extra space! This is a quiet place. Large groups or party animals please stay away!
The owners live in a similarly splendid mansion 2 kilometers away. The employ three local ladies to clean the house between rentals, and these same ladies are available to work for you, whether it be extra cleaning help, or to go shopping and cook and prepare excellent meals for you. Their extensive menus of home cooked Catalan roots cuisine are getting excellent reviews!

Further details indoors:
The main entrance to the house consists of a series of stone chambers leading to the different apartments, all quite atmospheric and the walls have ancient farm implements on display. From this downstairs hall there is a door leading to the new playroom, where the garage was, and three separate stairways going up into the three different apartments.
Apartment 1 has 5 en suite bedrooms: 3 rooms with queen size double beds and 2 large rooms with queen double bed and 2 single beds each. All rooms have private bathrooms. It has a separate kitchen and a banquet hall about 80m2 seating 14, but with a couple of extra planks of wood on tripods this table can seat over 30 guests.
Apartment 2 has 4 bedrooms: 2 rooms with queen size double beds, 1 room with 2 single beds and 1 room with 1 single bed. They all share a huge bathroom. This apartment has a central dining/living room with a dining room table seating about 10 or so, the living room with fireplace and TV and exit to the main terrace, and a separate kitchen with a breakfast table for 6.
Apartment 3 has 3 en suite bedrooms: 1 room has 1 double bed and 2 large rooms have 2 double beds each. All rooms have private bathrooms. This flat has a large kitchen/dining/living room with a fireplace and TV and the dining room table here seats 10 guests.
There is also a washroom downstairs with 2 washing machines and 1 clothes drier and a sink for hand washing.
Further details outdoors:
Situtated about 1 km of fully paved road, the wide driveway leads to the esplanade in front of the house, where there are a couple of outdoor covered sitting/dining areas. The first is a sort-of gazebo with 4 tables and 24 wicker chairs perched above the pool area, which is set in an olive grove a terrace level below.
The views from here are magnificent, 240º views north from the Pyrenees down east to the coast. The other outdoor sitting/dining area here is beside the built-in BBQ (see photo). At the back, there is another small sitting area with a BBQ.
The new 12x5 meter swimming pool is on a terrace just below the house with a fairly wide lawn and some shade trees, 16 deck chairs, and a small WC and changing room and sa mall table for 4 under a porch beside the pool. There is also a very convenient poolside shower.

General Proceedures
1) Deposits:
The standard method for making a reservation is by paying a deposit of 25%, usually directly to the owner´s bank account. This deposit is to guard against no-shows, and the amount received is deducted from the total cost of the rental. The remaining 75% is due either prepaid well ahead of your arrival or in cash upon occupying the property (you will be met at the property by the owners, who live 2 kms away).
There are many ways to make the deposit. By far the most common method is by Electronic Bank Transfer, and most of you will simply make a transfer from you online banking account, but in some cases I can make a charge on your VISA or Mastercard or you can send a Certified Bankers Cheque directly to the owners. I describe these methods in detail in email 2 of 3 on deposits. You decide which method is best for you, or feel free to come up with your own method. European Union bank account holders will want to send bank transfers as there are now absolutely free charges and commissions between EMU countries, EU regulation 2,560/2001 which came into effect July 2002.
2) Price all inclusive and changeover times
Rental fees quoted in our website are all-inclusive and there are no extra or hidden charges of any kind. All properties are rented clean, with plenty of clean sheets and towels and kitchen linen, etc., as well as your usual cooking utensils, and in many cases some basic start-up foodstuffs, like salt and pepper and olive oil, vinegar, coffee, etc. is there upon arrival. Some houses offer more generous welcome packages of food and drink. Those who rent for two weeks get a house cleaning and sheet and towel and linen change at the end of the first week included in the rental. Additional maid service is available upon request (usually at about 10 to 12 Euros per hour, minimum 3 hours). You are kindly requested to leave the house pretty much as you found it at the end of your stay.
There is no damage deposit. We trust you to contact me or the owners if something is broken so that we can fix or replace it before the next guests come in.
In the summer high season, most properties try to not to lose a day between rentals, and rentals are back to back, so incoming guests are kindly requested to occupy the house in the afternoon starting as of 5 pm and depart relatively early on the last day, usually before 10 am, so as to give time for a thorough cleaning between rentals. This is standard everywhere in the villa rental business. If you want to show up early, please check with me first. We can try to arrange for you to leave your things somewhere safe in the house and come back later when the cleaning crew has finished. Do not go into the house and please stay out of the way of the cleaners, gardeners, and pool maintenence staff or they might not finish their jobs! I get a lot of complaints from owners about guests who show up early and interrupt the cleaning. If you are arriving late in the day when shops are closed at 21:00h or on a Sunday, or on a holiday, I can arrange to have the owners do a shopping for you.
3) Balance due
The balance due for all rentals must be either prepaid well in advance of your rental (see email 2 of 3) or handed over in Euros cash upon arrival and getting the keys for the property from the owners. Payment at the end of the rental is not acceptable. Owners do not want to be in the position of having to chase after their guests for payment. In fact I advise owners not to hand over the keys until they have full payment.
It is up to you to make sure payment in full is made prior to arrival or be prepared to pay in cash upon arrival. Don´t leave this to the last minute as local ATM machines will not give you more 500 Euros per day, and local banks will not accept more than a few hundred Euros worth of traveller´s cheques due to massive fraud in that sector.
While you are here, house owner´s and/or their caretakers are always on hand in case you need them, as am I (Charlie). I'll be sending you an email asking for all your arrival details. Let's work together to make things go smoothly for all concerned. To a large extent, this sector of the "hospitality industry" depends on mutual trust and respect between owners and their guests. I can always be reached so feel free to call me or have the owners call me with any questions you may have, whether it be ahead of arrival, when you are with the owners, or during your stay. My telephone numbers are in the signature below.
Sincerely,
Charlie @ villasbarcelona

The Costa Brava/Catalonia/Barcelona region
What can one say about the Costa Brava?
Often considered a blend of the Côte d'Azur & Tuscany but with a Spanish flair for fun, the Costa Brava is rightfully famous as one of Europe's premiere holiday destinations. Why?
From the breathtakingly beautiful coastline, where wide beaches of golden sand and crystal clear waters alternate with rocky promentories and little coves backed by sheer cliffs topped with pine and oak forests, the Costa Brava boasts 150 blue-flag, top notch beaches. The interior of the Costa Brava is every bit as stunning as the coast (and far less touristy, of course!), with pristine medieval villages set in typically Mediterranean landscapes on the coastal plain, looking very much like Tuscany, and quickly ascending to typically Alpine landscapes as you work your way up into the Pyrenees, with trout-filled streams feeding environmentally protected lakes - like the one in Banyoles - offering a welcome alternative to the coastal beaches, yet only half an hour away by car.
There is always plenty to do. My 90-page guidebook describes 10 routes you can take on daytrips throughout the region. From village to village and including historical sites, recommended beaches, local festivities and folklore, restaurants, market towns, etc -- the guidebook in indispensable for gettting the most of your holiday and steering you clear of the worst tourist-traps in the area. Included are info on the 14 golf courses on the Costa Brava, numerous aquaparks & go-carting circuits, and every town seems to have a horseback-riding club & bicycle rental.
... but of course the main reason for coming to this part of the world is for the good weather, the laid back and friendly local atmosphere, and the excellent and very affordable food and drink. My guidebook explains local dishes, recommends restaurants and cafés, markets and specialty shops, and includes a guide to Spanish wines and cavas. By the way, my favorite local prix fix lunch menus cost about 10 Euros for a 3 or 4 course meal, including wine.
While I am being asked to talk about the Costa Brava, most people enjoy a day trip or two to Barcelona, city center is only one hour away by car or local commuter train. Many guests will also make their way to the Port Aventura amusement park, two hours due south, just off the AP-7 highway, just a few kms from the house. Day trips into Southern France are also recommended, the French border is just a 40-minute drive due north.
When you book your rental villa with me, I will send you a copy of the Guidebook as a .pdf file.
To sum up in one quick phrase, the Province of Girona and Costa Brava is often described as "a quintessentially Mediterranean experience". After only 23 years living here, I couldn't agree more!
The Banyoles / Camos area
This house is situated 2 kms from Camós and 5 kms to Banyoles, on Km 5 on the GIV-5147 road, to be exact. To give you an idea: Between Girona, Costa Brava´s historic capital city, and the elegant medieval lakeside town of Banyoles, there is a 4-lane highway. Running parallel to this highway to the south and hemmed in by the Serra Llonga mountains, is a winding back road with a few nice old stone villages and some renowned local restaurants. Camós, the nearest town to Can Tapies, is about 2 kms away - a 20 minute walk from the house.
Banyoles is a market town with a pleasant 12thC old town with lots of museums and historic buildings, surrounded by a newer part of town with a dozen or so supermarkets - it seems everyone is the Pla de L´Estany region does their shopping here. The area is pleasant and well-situated, the environmentally protected lake at Banyoles a exceptional gem, Girona´s old town is a short drive away, and the beaches are only about 25 kms away as the crow flies.

Our extended family from the UK and Canada of 24 had a fantastic week at Can Tapies, a huge and wonderful house in Aug 2012. The little kids called it "the castle". This 400 plus year old "villa" was very tastefully restored and extremely well furnished with every comfort and convenience one could hope for to make your stay very enjoyable and relaxing. Most of the bedrooms had lovely, on-suite bathrooms (very clean) and there was plenty of hot water for all. The setting was very quiet and peaceful and totally private with magnificent vistas of the countryside yet it was only a short drive to the local village bakery in the am or to Banyoles for the large supermarkets. Each day and evening we enjoyed the beautiful azor blue tiled pool down below the house and it was lit up like a jewel each night. It was great to have a covered pool seating area plus a restroom right down at the poolside and plenty of comfy sun loungers. Each morning someone came to clean the pool and remove the house garbage from bins outdoors. The owners , who lived only about a Kilometer away, were so kind to escort us to a a few small grocery shops in Banyoles when we suprisingly found the large supermarkets were closed on Sundays. (stock up on Saturday before you move in). We cooked wonderful meals together each night and ate outdoors on a covered terrace (one of 4) off one of the 3 well stocked kitchens. The manager provides very detailed directions and information about the surrounding area and recommends outings. Three of our favourite half day trips were an easy 20 min drive to the medieval village of Besalu; a 1 hour drive directly east to the coast to the Ruins of Empuries, (just north of L'Escala) to see a fantastic small museum and walk through acres Greek and Roman ruins overlooking the stunning Mediteranian beaches (perfect for a swim after); and also a half day drive to Olot west of Banyoles to a beautiful, volanic mountain region. Some in our group did day trips to Barcelona by car. We felt Can Tapies was great value for the summer weekly rate and it was definatley the nicest and grandest accomodation our family has had its reunion at in three previous times in Italy and France. What's there not love about Spanish wine, food, beaches and people? We would most definately stay there again. |

We`ve been a large group of families and friends. Our children (age 8 month to 15 years) loved the place and so did we. The place and house is big enough to be together or on your own for a while (if wanted). The pool is a little walk down the hill, which is good for parents with smaler children. |
