The Mallorca/Majorca region
Mallorca is one of the most popular European holiday destinations with a reputation for providing stylish and sophisticated vacations for families, business people and those who are looking for sporting activities.
The beautiful beaches and great weather are what make Mallorca a favourite holiday destination for UK tourists. However, whilst Mallorca is famed for its great sun, sea and sand there are also plenty of other things for those seeking a slightly different experience. You can discover delightful antiquated villages perched on the hill tops, and beautiful examples of Gothic architecture. Similarly the scenic beauty of the Island is amazing with wonderful olive groves, valleys, mountains, beautiful bays and coves. This small island has a diversity of landscape from the dramatic Tramuntana Mountain ranges to the fertile plain at the centre of the island to small secret coves and long sandy beaches.
Mallorca is covered with almond groves, vineyards, fruit trees, flocks of sheep and goats and sleepy villages where the pace of life is much slower. The island has an ancient history going back to Roman times and has had its fair share of invasions including the Moors and the Phoenicians who have left their mark on the physical and cultural landscape of the island. If you hire a car you can explore the mountains of Sierre tramuntana and the hidden away monasteries around the island. On the west side of the island is the famous mountain village of Valldemossa and the village and Port of Soller which is accessible by car or you can take the old fashioned train from Palma to Soller and the catch the tram into the port. To the north of the island you have Puerto Pollenca, Alcudia and C'an Picafort; these are all tourist areas. In the south of the island is the capital Palma, where you can do some sightseeing and shopping.
The climate here is variable, during July and August it is very hot, June and September are quite similar and it is hot, May and October have warm days and cool nights. The winter in Mallorca is very pleasant, however towards the end of December it starts to get cold, January can be wet but by the time spring comes the good weather is on its way.
Today, the island is peaceful and offers something for everyone.
Banyalbufar area
Banyalbufar, a municipality situated in the south west of the Tramuntana mountain range between Estellencs, Esporles and Valldemossa, has a population of approximately 500 people and its characteristic scenery is formed by the surrounding mountains, the spectacular terracing dedicated to cultivation and the abrupt coastline that goes from the Raco de S'Algar to the Port des Canonge.
Banyalbufar is the best kept secret in Mallorca: a beautiful village halfway between Andratx and Soller on the famous North Shore, or Costa Nord.
The mountains and sea offer wonderful walking, including a path that follows the beautiful coastline or over the mountain all the way to Soller.
There is a good classical music festival on the season. (Concerts a Banyalbufar). At the church. Ask for dates and details.
Nearby Deia and Valdemossa have long been attracting discerning tourists looking for authentic and beautiful Mallorca. Banyalbufar is coastal, and much more beautiful. Its also tiny, but with enough restautants, bars, terraces and wonderful beaches to keep you fully amused and chilled.
How to get there
Fly to Palma de Mallorca international airport . Banyalbufar is just 30 km from the airport. Cheap flights available from Easyjet.co.uk , Ryanair, from main U.K. airports.. An excellent website that searches for cheap flights from your local airport is www.skyscanner.co.uk.
Car hire is easy to book over the internet and it is advisable to book with a car hire company who have an office at the Airport as this makes car collection a lot easier. Holiday autos, Sixt car rental, Europe car, Gold cars, Avis to name a few are all based at the airport.
Local buses run regularly between the airport, the city (Palma de Mallorca), and the town. From there, only 5 minutes walking distance to Sa Vinya.
