The County Cork region
Rugged peninsulas, clean beaches, towering mountains and some of Ireland's most famous landmarks. West Cork is famous for its natural beauty. A favourite holiday destination for generations, West Cork offers a wide variety of vacations and breaks - from gourmet heaven in Kinsale to the bustle of Dingle, from the lushness of Killarney National Park not far away in Kerry, to the wild Atlantic views at Mizen Head. The region is historically and culturally important and still has a number of Gaeltacht areas. Visits to islands such as the Blaskets, Garnish and Cape Clear are particular treats while the Ring of Kerry and Killarney town remain firm favourites year after year.
Bantry / Kealkil area
The nearest village, Kealkil is 2 miles and has a shop and 2 pubs. The nearest town Bantry is a 15 minute drive and has a supermarket, gift shops, lots of restaurants and pubs. Bantry is famous for its market trading on regular days each month. Traders come from all over the country trying to sell just about anything you can think of!! A great atmosphere and a great day out. Gougane Barra Forest Park is nearby and is a location well worth visiting for a walk with either the dogs or children, it is dotted with meandering streams, deep forest alcoves, picnic areas and mysterious little tracks which take you away to a scene from Lord Of the Rings. Gougane Barra is unique among forest parks in that it provides drive around facilities for the motorist and a motor trail can be followed right along the ring road. There are also a number of signposted walking paths. The Slí Loai path follows the course of the infant Lee from the lower car park to the head of the great coum - a distance of about 1.5km. From the lower car park there is a choice of several other walks, including the ever-popular Nature Trail which is quite short - under 1km. For the more energetic there is a very fine walk called Slí Easa which commands magnificent views of the whole glen and the great mountain wall that encloses it. A GREAT DAY OUT. There are sandy beaches at Barley Cove and Toormore which are within an hours drive of the property. There are also some ideal beaches in the local Glengariff area which are great for walking, exercising dogs and getting some fresh West Cork air!
