The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
Bansko is a magical symbiosis of history, traditions and culture. All that a visitor reveals here is – old-time architecture, heroic history, authentic folklore, eternal culture, centuries - kept traditions and customs, specific food, sense of humor – a symbol of Bulgarianness. Bansko covers the most beautiful and majestic part of Pirin Mountain next to the colorful gorge Momina Klisura, Razlog valley and part of the Rhodopies. The summer there is short and cool, but the winter is long, mild and snowy. It is only 150km away from the capital Sofia, 150km from Plovdiv and 60km from Blagoevgrad. The nature is the biggest treasure of Bansko. Pirin mountain with its rare tree species is pronounced as a National park and it’s also under the auspices of UNESCO.
Pirin is noted for its rich flora and fauna. Much of the area is forested, with the best conifer woods in Bulgaria, holding important populations of the Balkan endemic species Macedonian Pine, Bosnian Pine and Bulgarian Fir. Animals include the Wolf and the Brown Bear.
