The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
Surrounded by the Pirin, Rila and Rhodopa mountains, Bansko is growing mountain resort with a current populations of around 10,000 permanent residents. The skiing season starts in mid December and lasts through until mid April when the town changes over to a summer resort offering hunting, walking, fishing and sightseeing.
The other two large ski resorts in Bulgaria - Borovets and Pamporovo, are also the subject of modernisation but its Bansko that is leading the way as a modern resort with world class facilities both on and off the slopes. Within the last 10 years the town has began turning from a peaceful mountain village into the fastest growing ski destination in Europe.
Millions of euros have been spent creating over 65 kilometers of ski runs and a lift network covering 26 kilometers. As the ski facilities are being improved so to is the infrastructure of the town and the local council have a vision of creating an all seasons resort.
Bansko / Gramadeto area
Bansko municipality is a settlement that was inhabited in succession by Thracians, Romans, Byzantines and Slavs. The remains of ancient fortresses, Thracian tumuli, medieval colonies, consecrated grounds, churches and chapels within the town earthwork testify to several historical epochs. The remains of the late medieval single-nave St. George and St. Elijah churches, monuments of culture, are to the southeast of Bansko.
The town of Bansko, in its present location, is believed to date back to around the 9th and 10th centuries. The earliest documentation for Bansko comes from the 16th century relating to the peroid of the Ottoman (Turkish) invasion. The town became the dominant centre of the surrounding local villages and was known for its crafts - many of which were sold throughout Europe. Bansko was also known as a cultural and spiritual centre, all of which led the other villages to look upon Bansko residents with envy.
It is believed the name Bansko came from the Bulgarian/Romanian arotocratic title 'Ban' and the village was known as the home of the BAN's. It was this perceived status that led residents to erect a church in 1835 as a long standing symbol of Bansko's importance. The clock was mounted in 1866 and is still recognised today as an unprecedented achievement of its day. 1912 saw the end of the Ottoman rule with a declaration from the poet Peyo Yavorov in the church yard.
Modern Bansko
Currently Bansko is considered the most modern ski resort in the Balkans. A great merit is due to the Yulen joint-stock company established in September 1999. On September 2, 2001 Yulen won the competition for a 30 year concession on the future ski resort equipment.
