The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

Between the Pirin and Rhodope mountains, Bansko is at the foot of the Pirin National Park. At an elevation of just under 1000 metres the town experiences heavy snow falls from November to April. A two station Gondola gives access to ski runs at Chalin Valog (as does the ski run back to Bansko) and the upper slopes where a variety of state of the art ski lifts whisk you to a height of over 2500 metres. It is also possible to ski all the way down to the Gondola, a ski run of 16km from the summit! There is reliable snow cover for up to 5 months of the year and the resort is equipped with numerous snow canons to ensure optimum skiing conditions throughout the season.
There is great skiing, snowboarding as well as Extreme Skiing, paragliding and helicopter trips at Bansko, and there is no doubt that Bansko is now the best and most modern ski centre in Bulgaria having the best snow record and the longest ski season (15th Dec - 15th May) of all the Bulgarian ski resorts. The total length of marked pistes is over 70km. There are 44 Snow Cannons which cover most of the slopes and extend the ski season.
Summers in Bansko are warm and sunny so ideal for a wide range of outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, quad biking and even white water rafting.
There are around 250 sunny days a year.

The cost of living is low in Bulgaria. Bansko boasts an abundance of après ski life, including numerous restaurants, taverns, nightclubs, casinos, an ice rink, bowling alleys, and horse riding. The traditional taverns are known as Mehanas and offer a great local atmosphere with plenty of charm and often host live folk music. There is a good selection of local cuisine and Bulgarian wines and beers as well as a wide variety of international food and drink catering for all possible tastes.
There are many cultural and historical monuments both in the town and in the surrounding region if you have time to explore, with a wide variety of shops supplying essential ski wear and equipment as well as the usual souvenirs.
The Pirin National Park covering over 40,000 hectares is a rugged and unspoilt mountainous region with 45 peaks over 2590 metres high, and 186 pristine lakes, numerous waterfalls, caves and historical sites. The national park is criss-crossed with hiking trails so a good map is strongly recommended for anyone wishing to explore the area.
**Additional information can be sent to you upon booking**
Transport: The basic type of transport that connects the town to the rest of the country is the bus transport. There are regular bus lines to Sofia, Blagoevgrad, Gotse Delchev, Razlog, Dobrinishte and many other villages in the district. The central bus station is modern and huge. It is located in the eastern end of the town on the main road Sofia-Blagoevgrad- Gotze Delchev, to the railway station. Bansko happens to be the last but one station on the narrow gauge line Septemvri- Velingrad-Dobrinishte. The railway station is behind the bus station (tel.: 07443 2215).

Directions from Sofia to Bansko:
In the Sofia area there a few road signs, and Cyrillic names look very different from their roman spelling, so they are shown in RED in these notes. The most difficult part is to get from the airport onto the main E79 that heads south to Kulata on the Greek border.
This route suggestion is about 160km long, and you should allow at least 3hrs for a comfortable journey. If you zero the car mileage trip meter at the airport, these notes give you the kilometerage to various turning points.
You could also ask a taxi to lead you from the airport to the “Ring Road”. That should cost around 15 Leva. The most popular language taught in schools was Russian, but is now English. So if you have to ask for directions, a youngster is more likely to speak English.
Petrol stations sell a small book of roadmaps for about 7 Leva (£2.50) and the boy scout rules of thumb work too; All satellite dishes point south, and of course you can think about where the sun should be for the time of day, and keep an eye on the way the shadows fall.
1. There are two airport terminals. From T1 (used by budget and charter airlines from the UK) simply follow the road that leaves the airport south straight to its end. From the new T2 international terminal (used by BA) the road makes a sharp right turn and runs west along the southern edge of the airport. Then you must turn left at the lights where you join the road from Terminal One. This road leads to a newly refurbished flyover which takes you in a southerly direction towards the Ring Road.
2. If you see the main entrance to the airport go past on your right, you have probably missed this turn and are heading for the centre of Sophia.
3. After 2-3 miles from the airport you go over a big flyover carrying the E80 and routes A1 and 8. Then on both sides you will see big apartment blocks.
4. You pass the “Sofia Business Park”.
5. Finally you arrive on a sliproad onto the Sofia ring road (don’t worry, you will not recognise it as such). This is road number 1 or 18 on maps.
6. You keep on going on this road for some miles and will pass a few traffic lights and the road will be bordered by building material and timber outlets.
7. Eventually on the left side will appear a McDonalds. You go on straight.
8. About two miles after the McDonalds, the road will go down a hill. On the left hand side will be a distinctively architected white building (electrical light shop) followed by a petrol station called “EkO”.
9. After it there is a big crossing with a strange “control box” on the left. This is controlled by traffic lights and is also a crossing point for the tram.
10. Turn left here. There may be a sign to Pernik or and will get onto a paved (cobbled) road, heading south west and marked as road number 1, 6, E79 or E871.
11. You now follow this road, which will lead you out of Sofia. You will pass through some suburbs. The road will turn into something like a motorway for a short distance and go back to single carriageway.
12. Some time later you will have another motorway stretch and back to single carriageway again. Eventually after a few miles you will come to a big junction where there is a pedestrian crossing and some yellow blinking lights. Keep on going straight.
13. The road will lead slightly up some hills and then there will be a big blue and white sign at the right side of the road, which tells you to take the slip road to the right, off the E871 and road number 6. The slip road is newly built and takes you left over the road, and onto the E79 (or road number 1) heading south to Kulata.
14. You will now be on the recently built dual carriageway. This is basically the road that you will stay on for the next hour or more of your journey until you are approximately 5 miles past Blagoevgrad (see more detailed instructions below).
15. You follow the road for around 60 miles. You will go through many small villages/towns and pass by a large town called Dupnitsa. Be careful of your speed as they have regaular speed patrols in the urban areas, especially Dupnitsa. Pass through some further villages and past a left turning for Rila Monastery (you will also have the beautiful Rila mountains to accompany you on the left. You will then reach the major town called Blagoevgrad. Much of the bypass is dual carriageway but again be careful to monitor your speed.
16. Some miles after Blagoevgrad you pass through a tunnel. A few miles after the tunnel you will see a bridge over the road and a coalmine to the left. You are approaching Simitli.
17. After the second bridge, take the slip road to the right to Bansko on road number 19. The slip road then twists to the left leading you eastwards to Bansko.
18. Follow the new road, passing Razlog until you reach Bansko.
