The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
The town of Bansko is located at 925 m. above sea level, and its skiing area is on 2000-2500 m above sea level.
Bansko is the all new Bulgarian ski resort, recently discovered by the foreign skiers and tourists, but well known in Bulgaria. Bansko provides a superb combination of virgin nature of The Pirin Mountains with state of the art ski lifts and a well planned ski area.It does this whilst still retaining the atmosphere of the ancient Bulgarian small town. Bansko is not only a resort but also a beautiful historic spot.
Bansko ski resort is situated in South-Western Bulgaria at the foot hills of one of the beautiful Bulgarian mountain Pirin. South of Bansko is where the Pirin National Park is situated. It is included in the UN List of National Parks and Reservations and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park covers over 27,400 ha and is famous for its lakes, waterfalls, caves, century-old trees and historical sites. The jagged mountains, include 70 glacial lakes scattered throughout them, and are home to hundreds of endemic and rare species. The mountains also have diverse and unique landscapes of great aesthetic value.
The distance between Sofia and Bansko is 170 km. The nearest International Airport is the one in Sofia. Transfer time from Sofia to Bansko is approximately 2 hours.

Bansko town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It consists of ancient monuments and narrow cobbled streets with stone houses with 120 cultural monuments plus museums and the permanent ethnographic exhibitions. A very interesting sight is The Holy Trinity church with its 30 m high bell tower and clock, splendid murals and woodcarvings. There are high quality traditional taverns offering fantastic food, but also nightclubs and bars for a livelier evening.
In summer hiking and climbing are popular, with well signed routes and hikers' chalets. Mountain bikes can be hired locally in order to explore this beautiful region. Local companies can organise trips in the mountains e.g. white water rafting, canoeing, paragliding. Also in summer the town hosts a week long jazz festival and other events.
This is also a great base for historical sightseeing e.g. the famous Rila Monastery. The area is rich in historical remains, from ancient burial mounds to Roman amphitheatres (car required). Many traditional villages are in the area, some of which give the chance to see displays such as traditional dancing, folklore events and bag pipe playing.
Surrounded by The Pirin, The Rila and The Rhodopa mountains, Bansko is a nice mountain resort with short summer and long winter. Enjoy the fabulous scenic walks and beautiful lakes."Moratovo" lake "Valeavishki" lakes & "Popovo" lake.
For après ski the traditional Bansko taverns (called "Mehana"), with their exceptional charm and style offer local atmosphere by their cuisine and good selection of Bulgarian wines. Most of the local "Mehanas" even offer live folk music. Many local cafes and bars offer refreshments. Discos and night clubs work without time limit, and usually close early in the morning.
As the cost of living is very cheap in Bulgaria, your money will go several times further here than in skiing resorts in other parts of Europe.
