The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
Bansko (Bulgarian: Банско) is situated in south-western Bulgaria, at an altitude of approx .1930m above sea level, at the foot of the Pirin Mountains. UNESCO designated most of the 403 square km Pirin Mountain range a World Heritage Site in 1983. Pirin mountain itself is the second highest in Bulgaria and the sixth highest in Europe. Pirin National Park has great walks and trekking paths, as well as horse riding and other activities is the summer months.
Surrounding Bansko town are numerous beautiful mountain lakes, most notably lake "Moratovo", lake "Valeavishki" and lake "Popovo". The old pine woods also make a popular site for wildlife spotting, recreation and trekking. Nearby Rila Monastery and the Holy Trinity church with its 30 m high bell tower and clock, murals and woodcarvings are also well worth a visit.
Bulgaria continues to offer great value for money, with consistently high standards and a wide range of facilities and activities.
Bansko / Bansko Old Town area
Surrounded by the Pirin, Rila and Rhodopa mountains, Bansko is Bulgaria’s largest and most popular ski resort. Offering great value for money with excellent skiing and boarding, and a modern and efficient lift system.
A multi million Euro project that started in 2003 has seen the installation of new lifts, including an eight-person gondola, snow guns, and electronic pass system. These have resulted in Bansko being awarded an event in the 2009 word skiing championships. The resort has also applied to host the winter Olympics in 2014, which again will stimulate massive investment in the skiing infrastructure and surrounding area.
In contrast to the modern mountain resort, Bankso also offers a taste of the traditional with lively Pirin Street and the old town square area providing plenty of taverna's to enjoy local Bulgarian cuisine. For great Apres-ski why not enjoy a drink or meal at the Happy End restaurant next to the Gondola lift which turns into a lively night club later on, or one of a number of great clubs and bars. There are also plenty of shops to stock up on ski gear or to find Bulgarian crafts and souvenirs, or try the outdoor ice skating ring near the Gondola.
Bansko is a great ski resort, but in the summer months also boasts a wide variety of activities as well as playing host to the traditional Summer Jazz Festival, Bulgarian Folk Festival and many other cultural events.
