The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
The town of Bansko is located at 925m above sea level and its skiing area is 2000-2500m above sea level.
Bansko is the all new Bulgarian ski resort which was recently discovered by the foreign skiers and tourists but well known in Bulgaria. Bansko provides a superb combination of virgin nature of the Pirin Mountain with the highest peak in the area is Vihren at 2914m with state of the art ski lifts and a well planned ski area. Bansko is not only a ski resort but a beautiful historic spot and still retains the atmosphere of the ancient Bulgarian town.
Bankso ski resort is situated in South-Western Bulgaria at the foot hills of one of the most beautiful Bulgarian mountains- the Pirin. South of Bansko is where the Pirin National Park is situated. It is included in the UN List of National Parks and Reservations and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park covers over 27,400 ha and is famous for its lakes, waterfalls, caves century-old trees and historical sites. The jagged mountains, include 70 glacial lakes scattered throughout them and are home to hundreds of endemic and rare species. The mountains also have diverse and unique landscapes of great aesthetic value.
The major mountain ranges are the Rila, Pirin, Rhodope and Stara Planina. The Bulgarian mountains occupy half of the country's territory and are easily accessible making this a prime destination for both winter and summer tourist activities.
The distance between Sofia and Bansko is 150km.Sofia International Airport is the nearest and transfer times take approx 2 hrs.
Bansko / Bansko Old Town area
Bankso is both the youngest and the best developed ski resort in Bulgaria. The ski conditions are excellent. The slopes offer runs and tracks for all types of skiers from beginners to the experts. The ski runs are maintained in excellent condition. The resort is equipped with machines for artificial snow. The two major ski regions of Bansko - the lower called Chalin Valog (1,100 - 1,600m) and the higher Shiligarnika (1,700 - 2,500m) are situated above the town on the northern slopes of the Pirin Mountains. Slalom and giant slalom runs are available in the Shiligarnika region. The total track length is 75km with plans to extend this to 95km by 2009. Bansko town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It consists of ancient monuments and narrow cobbled streets with stone houses with 120 cultural monuments plus museums and the permanent ethnographic exhibitions. A very interesting sight is the The Holy Trinity Church with its 30m high bell tower clock, splendid murals and woodcarvings. It is one of the greatest historic and cultural landmarks of the town of Bansko.
Every August, Bansko hosts a Jazz Festival for a week (for 2009 8 - 13 Aug) This is quite a event which usually lasts around a week and is very popular. In summer, hiking, climbing, horse riding and mountain biking are all activities than can be enjoyed whilst appreciating the beautiful scenery surrounding the Pirin, Rila and Rhodopa mountains not to mention the scenic "Moratovo", "Valeavishki" and "Popovo" Lakes. Local companies will be happy to organise fishing, white water rafting, canoeing and paragliding.A new "Ian Woonsan" golf course is nearby approx 10 min drive which boasts a fabulous club house.
Bankso is also a great base for historical sightseeing such as the Rila Monastery. The area is rich in historical remains from ancient burial mounds to Roman amphitheatres. The Monastery was first created in the 10th century by Ivan Rilski as a refuge for hermits. There is a rich museum collection of valuable old manuscripts and documents, icons an ethnographic exhibition of fabrics, jewelry, carpets and a rich library.
Many villages surrounding Bansko give the chance to enjoy traditional displays such as bag pipe playing, folklore events, traditional dancing and firework displays celebrating local holidays and events.
Usually each Sunday there is a local market within Bansko and there is a good choice of shops in Bansko Old Town.
A day trip to the spa region of Sandanski near to the Greek boarder is worthwhile. This area is well known for its natural water spa's.After which you could stop of at the village of "Melnik" to view the Abbey and of course sample some of local brewed wine. Melnik is the smallest Bulgarian town, picturesquely situated amidst a fantastic scenery - strangely shaped pyramids of sand and limestone. During the 17th - 18th c. it became a flourishing tobacco and wine producing centre. Every February a wine fest takes place all over the country when people celebrate Saint Trifon's Day.
Banya is situated in the south-west of Bulgaria in a valley between the three big mountains, Rila, Pirin and Rhodopes, 156km from the capital Sofia. Ruins of the interesting archaeological sites from Thracian and Medieval times were found not far from Banya. More then 70 mineral springs with average temperature of 58 C. Banya is extremely attractive with its open air swimming pools with mineral water which are near the public baths. Small beautiful parks and a number of folk-restaurants/mehanas decorated in the old traditional style makes your stay an unforgettable experience of the local traditions.
Whilst in Bansko there are many traditional taverns called ("Mehana") with their exceptional charm and excellent home cooked foods along with a good selection of Bulgarian beers and wine. Most of these Mehana's offer live folk music which really adds to the atmosphere. There are also many local cafes, bars and several nightclubs. A state of the art brand new 10 lane bowling alley has recently opened and there is a ice-skating rink.
As the cost of living is much cheaper in Bulgaria than in other parts of Europe you will really see your money go much further and so this makes for a ideal all rounder holiday.
The above is a sampler of what is available, however, there is more to choose from within your information pack located within the apartment.
