The archeological traces of the inhabitants of Bansko and the Razlog Valley in general date to the early periods of the Roman Empire. There are several housing structures at the outskirts of the town, which date to 100 BC.

Until 5 October 1912, Baniçka (Bansko's former name) was a part of the Ottoman Empire, but enjoyed a quasi self-rule autonomy granted by the sultan. The town was ruled by an assembly of the elders, while justice was administered by the Ottoman judge in Razlog. It was incorporated in Bulgaria in 1912 as a result of the First Balkan War.

Bansko today

Bansko, once mainly a stockbreeding and travelling merchant community, has nowadays become a centre of winter and summer tourism. The mountain peaks near the town, the numerous lakes and the old pine woods make it a popular site for recreation. In recent years, the town has gained international popularity after the start of the annual Bansko Jazz Festival and consequently the annual Bansko pop-star concert featuring top pop stars. The nearby village of Banya, located only 5 km from the town, is known for its 27 thermal mineral springs.

"Great location , views, amenitiesbe even better when no noisy stray dogs"

Everything went smoothly , no flight delays , transfer pick up waiting ready for when we left plane, had 2 vehicles as 13 of us but great drivers for a 3hr trip, large cash deposit £200 seemed alittle high to leave for key collection and extra £30 paid for tkeys to be collected on leaving. Great location, lovely apartments couldnt get fire to light despite getting wood, one of the apartments had dishwasher other didnt but we mostly ate out daily so not bothered, hotel facilities and drinks great , most ski runs closed dueto world cup so never got best out of skiing but most definately return and would recommend to others ... had fab time with family highly recommended

"OK For Larger Groups, Could do with a 'spruce up'."

On arrival at the apartment, we were a little disapointed. The rooms were all very cold and felt a little damp; it seemed that the apartment had been un-occupied for a while. It would have been nice if the property management company had maybe turned on some heating and hot water a little in advanced so that it was more welcoming. Overall the apartment could do with a general 'tidy'. It seemed tired in places, some stains on the chairs and sofas, walls were a little scruffy in places and there were several DIY issues. Door handle kept falling off, shelves in the bathrooms were not straight and so items fell off and some of the taps kept dripping. We also found that the ventilation was terrible from downstairs, especially with cigarette smoke and cooking smells, everything they did came upstairs into our rooms. We tried to relieve this by investing in an air freshner but it did not help. We did inform the management company as they had made it very clear that if the room smelt of smoke then we would be charged £50, we wanted to be clear that the smell was not coming from us!!! For the size and cost of this apartment, it would also have been an added bonus to have some games or at least something for evening amusement, usually we have found properties accommodating larger groups are better equiped in this area, additionally resort and apartment information provided was out of date. The overall cleanliness was OK and the hot water was great. Also by middle of the week the apartment had warmed up but we did have to suffer a few nights of blankets wrapped around us. We could of course purchased some wood from reception for the fire but it was very expensive for a small amount. Location of the apartment was great, and was above the 'smog' that seemed to hang around the main town all day. Swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room were all an added bonus but you do have to pay 10 Lev a day for using (approx £5). The Mountain Dream restaurant was also very good and very reasonable prices, much better than anything in town. The ski bus into town from the hotel was not free, we did not use this though so cannot comment on the price charged. There is an issue locally with stray dogs, we were quite often woken by these as they seem to stray freely around the complex and barked early in the morning.
Overall we had an enjoyable holiday, we would not return to Bansko though as the town was just to large and commercial and the queues were far too long for the 1 gondola up the mountain, sometimes as much as 2hrs and this is being generous.
