The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
South of Bansko is the Pirin National Park, which is listed in the UN List of National Parks and Reservations and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park covers over 27,400 ha and is famous for its lakes, waterfalls, caves, century-old trees and historical sites. The jagged mountains, include 70 glacial lakes scattered throughout them, and are home to hundreds of endemic and rare species.
Rila Monastery, founded by Ivan Rilski in 927, is 1 hour away by car. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is Bulgaria's most famous monastery and set in a narrow forested valley. Explore the 300 monk cells that fill four levels of the beautiful balconies. The Nativity Church built in the 1830s, contains 1200 fascinating murals.
UNESCO World Heritage Site, Boyana Church, is located on the outskirts of Sofia. The 10th century eastern church was enlarged at the beginning of the 13th century by Sebastocrator Kaloyan, who also ordered a second building to be erected next to it. The 13th century frescoes in the second church make it one of the most important collections of medieval paintings. The site is one of the most complete and perfectly preserved monuments of east European medieval art.
The smallest town in Bulgaria, Melnik, has had an eventful and turbulent history. Archaeologists claim that the Thracians were the first to settle here and then came the Romans leaving an ancient Roman Bridge. There are 96 buildings that are cultural monuments. The white house facades are framed with dark boards and the windows are strangely grouped several together. Inside the houses there are carved wood ceilings, chimneys, decorative cupboards, murals and even stained glass. Truly a fascinating sight!
Bansko area
Bansko itself is a captivating and ancient town established in the 9th century AD and located only 160km south of Sophia. The town is magnificently encircled by the Pirin, Rila, and Rhodopa Mountains. Remains of ancient fortresses have been preserved in the Staroto Gradishte (Stankale) locality about 4 km southwest of the town and also in the Yulen locality (downstream Demyanitsa river). Archaeologists have discovered a 2nd century B.C. burial site containing a set of bronze surgical instruments and remains of medicinal preparations in the ancient Dobrokyovitsa locality (west of Bansko). Southeast of Bansko are remains of late-medieval single-nave churches - St George and St Elijah.
Equally attractive in all four seasons, the town offers various options for excitement and relaxation. Endless possibilities make Bansko and surrounding area a paradise for sports enthusiasts and culture admirers with over 120 cultural monuments in the town itself. Visit the The Holy Trinity church with its 30m high bell tower and clock, beautiful murals and woodcarvings. The traditional Summer Jazz Festival and the Bulgarian Folk Festival are also held here during the summer months.
Nightlife in Bansko is varied and has approx. 45 pubs, 18 restaurants, and 3 night clubs! Bansko’s delightful taverns called 'Mehana' offer traditional atmosphere with great cuisine and a good selection of Bulgarian wines.
