The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
Bansko offers the best skiing in Eastern Europe with ultra modern ski facilities with most of the lifts and ski slopes having been developed over the last 5 years or so. Access to the 70kms of pisted runs is via 25 kms of speedy and comfortable lifts- 1 gondola lift , 6 four-seater chair lifts , 1 three seater chair lift and six tow lifts. There are runs to suit all standards of skier from absolute beginner to expert with the Albert Tomba black run offering a stern test to the most accomplished of skiers. It is possible to ski right from the highest run, at 8,500 feet down to the gondola base station, over 15kms of continuous skiing The Pirin Mountains are situated in south western Bulgaria, with Vihren (2,914 m high) the highest peak, The range extends about 40 km northwest-south-east, and about 25 km wide. Most of the range is protected within the Pirin National Park and the mountains are noted for their rich flora and fauna. The area is heavily forested with the best conifer woods in Bulgaria, including Macedonian Pine, Bosnian Pine and Bulgarian Fir.
Bansko / Razlog area
Bansko is a historic old town that sits at the foot of the stunning Pirin mountain range and borders the Pirin national park - a UNESCO protected area of stunning natural beauty. There are known to be over 180 lakes throughout the national park area. Bansko is 930m above sea level and it's highest ski point is at 2580m. The two main ski areas are Chalin Valog at 1100-1600m and Shiligarnika at 1700-2580m. There are around 70km of pisted ski runs that are accessed by the state-of-the-art Doppelmayer 8 seater gondola based at the south of the resort at the base of the mountains. The longest combined run is 16km.
Bansko is rapidly developing as a summer destination with pleasantly warm summers and fantastic mountain walks. The range of summer activities is constantly expanding with walking, mountain biking ,fishing and hunting, paintballing , whitewater rafting and canoeing amongst the most popular. The Ian Woosnam Pirin Golf course is partially open and should be in full swing by next summer.Bansko is located 100 miles from the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia and it takes just over 2 hours by road to reach Bansko from Sofia Airport.
Unlike most other Bulgarian ski resorts, Bansko is an authentic old town which has been modernised tastefully. Much activity in Bansko is based around the old town square From there you can walk through the narrow cobbled streets and enjoy the culinary delights of the Mehanas ,or local taverns, offering Bulgarian cuisine and local wines and beers way below UK prices On both hot summer and cold winter nights, locals and tourists will sit outside the local cafes around the square and drink local beers and wines. August is festival month in Bansko with two main festivals. First there is the Pirin Folk Festival - where you can see hundreds of folk singers, dancers and musicians from the Pirin mountain region present their traditional folk dances and music. Following this is the International Jazz Festival, which starts in the second week of August - with visiting performers from all over Bulgaria come to Bansko for the week. The festival is open air and the music can be heard all over the town
