The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

Surounded by the Pirin, Rila and the Rhodope mountains, Bansko lies at the foot of the beautiful Pirin Mountains. The Pirin National Park is the largest protected site in Bulgaria and Bansko is Bulgaria's newest and most rapidly developing ski resort. The area combines great skiing, beautiful landscapes and huge historical and cultural interest with crystal clear mountain air, breathtaking panoramas and local tradition.
The climate is incredibly intense in its nature, basking in glorious sunshine in the summer months, bathing in realms of snow throughout the extended winter season, and vividly dynamic seasons in the interims.

Bansko area

There are so many different things to do that it is difficult to summarise. The skiing cannot be beaten in the Balkans and the favourable snow fall ensures great skiing throughout the winter months. There is a ski bus to and from the gondola (8 kms away) every few minutes in the morning and afternoon.
For the non skier there is still the history and culture to be enjoyed. In summertime everyone is faced with a mountain of opportunities, combined with a fantastically hot climate. The Greek coast is but an hour and a half away, or alternatively a two hour drive brings you into the capital, Sofia, for shopping, culture and all the joys of a beautiful, metropolitan city. Alternatively, mountain walks, crystal clear air, spa resorts and a National bear sanctuary are all to be enjoyed.
Bansko town centre is a listed World Heritage Site, and it is easy to see why with its quaint cobbled streets, where you can still hear the local Bansko dialect being used, and old clock tower, where the bell has been measuring the hours for over 150 years. Skiers of all abilities are well catered for as Bansko has over 65 kilometres of marked ski runs, which are easily accessed by the newly installed and impressive Gondola lift. As the day draws to a close, Après-ski is centred around the local “Mehanas,” friendly taverna type restaurants serving traditional Bulgarian cuisine and drinks, often with roaring log fires and live entertainment. For a truly enjoyable winter sports holiday, or a wonderful, relaxing break throughout the rest of the year, enhanced by warm Bulgarian hospitality, visit Bansko where you really can have the best of both worlds.

Perfect Skiing and Snowboarding
In less than 20 minutes a fast Gondola cable lift will take you to the ski centre, which is situated about 12 kilometres away from town. On your way back at the end of the day it is up to you to decide whether to return by the Gondola or ski down the ski road, which marks Bansko as one of the few resorts in the world to offer this option.
The ski centre has over 65 kilometres of marked ski runs and cross country tracks that have been extensively cultivated. More than 50% of the slopes are covered by snow cannons and all runs are groomed by more than 12 Kassbohrer slope maintenance vehicles to guarantee maximum safety and pleasure from the great selection of nursery, intermediate, and advanced pistes. The ski runs are serviced by a number of chair lifts and drag lifts, all of which are cutting edge Doppelmayer ski lifts, including the 8-man Gondola and the four-chair lift with bubble shields to protect you from harsh weather conditions. Expect no queues for this and the coming seasons for the easy hands-free access to all lifts is secured by SkiData chip-card ski passes that you never need to take out of your pocket, which is still a rare occurrence in many other resorts.
In addition to on-piste skiing, skiers and snowboarders are welcome to the fun park in the Platoto area which offers fans of the extreme winter sports the option to ski over present artificial bumps and jumps as well as to build those on their own. Also, the half-pipe located by the place where Bansko’s famous snow towers are usually built, offers both skiers and snowboarders an arena to boast their latest tricks.
Last but not least, Bansko offers its guests a unique 16-kilometre uninterrupted skiing, starting from Todorka Peak at the highest point of the ski centre, all the way to base station of the Gondola lift at the outskirts of town. The last 7 km of the slope are lighted, and the entire facility is equipped with artificial snow machines to ensure a great skiing experience even in warmer conditions.
There are a number of web cameras by the slopes and images of these are available on-line at www.banskoski.com, which is the official internet site of the Bansko ski area. Images of the web cameras are also displayed on-line at the base station of the Gondola lift.

Beginners
Bansko is a great place for first-time skiers and snowboarders. The ULEN Ski-school has some of Bulgaria’s best instructors and the ULEN Rent-a-ski offers the latest in ski and snowboard equipment. This, combined with the availability of baby-drags and plenty of blue runs, has instituted the resort as the place where many have become enchanted with the magic of winter sports and where even more keep returning.

Intermediate
Plenty of blue and red runs, suitable to intermediate skiers, make the resort a very good choice both for those committed to becoming experts, as well as for those who take up winter sports merely as a recreational activity. Most runs are accessible by chair lifts and there are a number of dining establishments by the slopes for skiers and snowboarders to re-charge or unwind. Hands-free access to lifts and the rare occurrence of queues designate Bansko as a smart choice for intermediate skiers and snowboarders.

Advanced and Off-piste
While some red runs and the Alberto Tomba black run should keep most experts busy, Bansko is probably more popular with experts for its great offerings of extreme and off-piste skiing. The resort is a regular host to extreme competitions, but even on quieter days there is the alternative to compete on pre-defined slalom traces on the marked slopes. The ski and snowboard fun-park area and the half-pipe facility are popular playgrounds for experts to boast their latest tricks. The Bansko snow towers, these hand-made symbols of extreme skiing and snowboarding, are another prominent assembly site for fans of the extreme. Powder skiing, heli-skiing and para-gliding are also available locally.
If you wish to take it off-piste, please make sure that your insurance policy covers off-piste skiing and that you take a guide with you.

Biathlon and Cross Country
Bansko, with its biathlon and cross-country trails, is also the choice of Irina Nikulchina and Nina Kadeva, two Bulgarian women that are among the world’s top ten biathlon racers.

Ski Lifts Working Hours & Ski Guides/Prices
The well-maintained lift system works from 09:30 till 16:30 each day. Ski guide service is available for intermediate and advanced skiers for off-piste skiing. Full day guiding service is also available to snowboarders.
A 6 day ski pass costs around £140 if bought at the lift station and ski/boot/stick hire is around £75. It can pay to shop around, however. If you google 'ski pass Bansko', then there are several sites offering deals. www.banskotouristinformation.com also offers discounts and a wealth of further information.

Après-ski
Among other Bulgarian mountain resorts, Bansko offers what is probably the best après-ski, because it is a unique combination of a modern mountain resort and a living rustic town with a population of about 10,000 people. Almost a hundred “mehana” dining places offer many local cuisine dishes, such as “kapama” or “Banski starets” in the atmosphere of traditional songs and dances, performed by local artists. In some of the smaller “mehana” your waiter may very well be the proprietor of the place.
Besides the famous local church, St. Trinity, there are many historical, architectural, and cultural monuments in Bansko, including the houses of many famous Bulgarians from the period of the Bulgarian Revival. Both winter and summer, Bansko hosts a number of festivals, including the Bansko Jazz Fest and the Festival of Local Traditions.

Bansko’s most popular hangout for night birds is the Amnesia disco club, which features popular music in a relaxed atmosphere. A good place to be on a day off the slopes could be the bowling at hotel Strazhite.

If you are ready to unwind even before you have taken off your ski or snowboard shoes, visit one of the numerous dining establishments and ski-bars by the slopes in the Bansko ski area as well as those by the base station of the Gondola cable car. There are plenty of new diners and ski-bars to quench your thirst. Sky TV with sport channels are available in Happy End bar and in the lobby bar of hotel Strazhite

Night-life
At the end of the day, for a truly happy ending, the Happy End restaurant by the Gondola base station turns into a night club whose lively atmosphere is only rivalled by the Amnesia discotheque in the centre of town. Other clubs, such as the Night Club in hotel Pirin, the Karaoke Bar in hotel Bansko, the Buddha Bar club and No Name discotheque, add up a modern flavour to this town of otherwise conservative moods. For a quieter night out the Bowling arena in hotel Strazhite might be a very good alternative.

HI Alistair,
Just to let you know we got back a couple of days ago and had a lovely time in Bansko.
When we arrived at the airport there was no snow to be seen anywhere and also when we arrived at the apartment. All my family were laughing and saying I had picked somewhere where there was no snow to ski!! Anyhow the last laugh was on them as when we woke up the next day the whole place was covered in snow and it continued to snow all day!!! I think everyday we were there we had some form of snow fall and the instructor that I had said it was ideal ski conditions with powder snow – although the avalanche risk was high!! He said it had been 4 years since they had had this much snow in February.
The apartment was great – and even with 8 of us we didn’t feel cramped at all – obviously we were out early in the morning and then most nights ate out in the town. We left our car hire until we arrived – but were lucky and managed to get a vehicle to transport us all – we had a few episodes in the snow where we had to push the car out – should have asked for some snow chains!!!
The first day we went down the mountain road but it was a bit advanced for my sister and I – we went hurtling down – and I had to keep falling over to stop myself careering of the edge!! We were probably the only skiers who walked down some of the slopes rather than ski. I had a few lessons with the Ullen ski school but still need to get a bit more confidence up – but would go ski-ing again. My younger son took to it like a duck to water – straight down the mountain road no problem and then was off with his older brother all the holiday – even tackling the 73% degree black slope – (he was under strict instructions not to go on black slopes) – but his older brother talked him in to it – good job I was too scared to go to the top – so I couldn’t see what he was up to.
It was lovely to be in the fresh air everyday – and we thoroughly enjoyed the holiday – we certainly slept well every night. All our flights etc were on time so everything ran smoothly. I will certainly recommend your apartment and Bansko to anyone looking for a ski-ing holiday.
Regards
Linda 26/02/09

Hi Alistair,

You had right everything was more than perfect and the landscape is gorgeous. Especially up on Virhen mountain. It was a fine vacation (despite few rainy days) and we shall come back for sure, maybe in December.
Thanks for all
