The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
Bulgaria is a picturesque country with over 13 centuries of history in Europe. It is situated in southeastern Europe, Bulgaria occupies the northeastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. Population: 7,973, 673 (2001) The capital city is Sofia. The official language is Bulgarian and the alphabet is cyrillic so don't expect to understand any signage. The traditional religion in the Republic of Bulgaria is Eastern Orthodox Christianity. The 3rd of March is a a national holiday as it marks the Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman domination (1878). Monetary unit: the Bulgarian Lev. There is 2 lev to 1 pound. There are 28 administrative regions, named after their respective regional centres.
The land is diverse with average height above sea level 470 m. With mountains, valleys, plains but mostly the landscape is mountanous. The climate is moderate continental with Black Sea influence in the east and Mediterranean in the south. The river Danube flows through it's NOrthern teritories. It has warm and cold mineral springs (more than 600); lakes coastal (some with curative mineral mud) and of glacial origin (in the Rila and Pirin mountains). There is a particularly good hot spring in Dobrinishe not far from Bansko.
Bansko is in Southwest Bulgaria some 150 km from the capital Sofia. It was a unique small village with authentic architecture from the Bulgarian Revival period. It has in recent times been transformed into a morden ski resort. In Winter, Bansko is the winter sports centre of Pirin Mountain; during the Summer, Bansko is the premier starting point for a number of tourist routes to the Pirin Mountain. Closest airport is Sofia airport with a transfer time of two-and-a-half hours.
Bansko / Bansko Royal Towers area
Bansko lies at the foot fo the Vihrin, the highest mountain in the Prin range. The town retains it's traditional spirit whilst developing into a fine ski resort providing excellent skiing for beginners and intermediates and snow boarders. Ski runs total 65 km covering 17 pistes. It is in particular and great value for money. A number of hotels offer great facilities for après-ski relaxation and plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs, offering a vibrant nightlife.
Bansko Town
A thriving town with plenty of shops to explore · wide variety of good value for money restaurants and traditional tavernas (mehanas) · numerous lively bars and nightclubs to suit all tastes (including a few adult themed ones). There is a bar (the Happy end bar) just at base of the Gondola for a quite apre ski. There is 10 pin bowling at the Strazhite hotel. There is new ice rink to suite all abilities. If you fancy a flutter there are two casinos one in the Strazhite hotel.
Food and Drink
There are cheap Bulgarian red and white wines to choose from. The local gin is called Rakiya and is not for the faint hearted. A bottle of beer costs about 80 pence. Three course meal from £8, pizza from £2.50, coffee and tea from 50p. Food is more expensive in the hotels but then again the choice and quality can rival any Western European resorts. The local eateries are called Mehanas. There are over 100, often family own and runned so the food is authentic and homemade. Please note that the meal order is a bit like the italian meal order. You may have your vegetable dish followed by your meat dish. If you want both on the same plate at the same time please make it clear.
Family
Bansko is a great place for families. The resort offers a ski and non-ski kindergarten located by the bottom station of the Gondola lift. Children from 3-7 yrs inclusive are welcome at the club, where they are given expert supervision. For children 4-7 yrs, the package includes daily tuition (2 hours per day), skis, boots, lift pass (to the snow club only), and daily activities including outside snow fun! This service can only be booked locally. Prices are approx. £15 per day or £80 for 6 days.
Shopping.
Lots to choose from and located all over the town. From traditional, ethnic type gift shops to morden supermarkets. Needless to say there are lots of ski shops, one within the Bansko Royal Towers Hotel Complex.
Out and about
There are over 100 cultural and historic monuments in and around Bansko including the world famous Rila monastery. Built in its present form between 1816 and 1846 the monastery was first created inthe 10th century as a refuge for hermits. Bansko also boasts one of the best museaum complexes in eastern Europe including Neophit Rilsky Museum (a former cell school), Hilendarsky/Rilsky Convent (Bansko School of icon-painting) and The House of Arts and Poetry.
The Prin National Park
Extending over an area of 27,400ha and lying at an altitude of 1,008 - 2,914m in the Pirin mountains, the Pirin National Park has a limestone Balkan landscape, with lakes, waterfalls, caves and pine forests. The rugged mountains, with some 70 glacial lakes scattered throughout them, are home to hundreds of endemic and rare species, many of which are representative of the Balkan Pleistocene flora. The mountains also have diverse and unique landscapes of great aesthetic value. The Pirin National park is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage Site.
How to get there
Cheap flights from the UK. Easy Jet from Gatwick to Sofia, Wizzair from Luton to Sofia for silly money £30, if you plan ahead. Lots more options available online a few e.gs are: travelsupermarket.com, cheapflights.co.uk, bulgaria-air.co.uk, hemusair.org, aitalia.com. From the airport you can get a TAXI (i.e one arranged just for you)to bansko for under 100 Euros (single fare), the jounery will take 2.5 hours. You can take official yellow cabs from the airports taxi rank but as they are like black cabs they are more expensive. I CAN ARRANGE AIRPORT TRANSFER . CAR HIRE - Cost about £20/day minus chaffeur. Relevant sites include travelsupermarket, rentacarbulgaria.com, bulgariacarrent.com as well as the usual suspects i.e Avis, Europar car. You can travel by train from Sofia but i recommend travelling by hire car or taxi rather than train. The train takes an enormous detour and considerably more time. However, if time is not a problem the scenery is magnificent and takes you through the highest train station in the Balkans and it is cheap. You can travel by bus from the central bus statio or the Sofia Ovcha Kupal Bus Terminal to Bansko. The buses to Bansko is of the same standard and quality of a bus in England. The timetable can be obtained from their http://tis.centralnaavtogara.bg/guide/welcome.jsp. July last year buses ran at- 07.30, 08.30, 09.45, 13.15, 14.00
