The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
Walking routes are well marked. There are literally thousands of lakes in the lower hills and the scenery is breathtaking. Horse riding is available in nearby Razlog, as well as Quad biking and Ski-dooing. The Rila Monastery is accessible from Bansko, for a day taking in a little history and culture.
Pirin National Park, ancient, massive & diverse, is on your doorstep. The flora and fauna and landscape diversity of the park are so special they are protected by national and international legislation. Two nature reserves are located within the park's territory.
Bayuvi Dupki–Dzhindziritsa is one of the oldest reserves in Bulgaria. It was established in 1934 to preserve the natural primeval forests of Macedonian and Mountain Pine and the huge diversity of animal and plant species. In 1977, the territory became a Biosphere Reserve after the UNESCO program. The YULEN Reserve was established in 1994. It contains an exceptional diversity of forest, sub-alpine and alpine ecosystems and landscape.
Vihren People's Park was established on the 8th of November 1962. In 1974, it was enlarged and renamed “Pirin People's Park”. Its territory covers 40,332 hectares. The park is exclusively state-owned and borders on the municipalities of Gotse Delchev, Bansko, Razlog, Simitli, Kresna, Striumiani and Sandanski.
Due to its unique natural system, Pirin National Park is a potential NATURA 2000 and EMERALD site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is truly a special place.
Bansko / Gramadeto area
FOOD With around 40 Mehanas, hotel restaurants and street cafés, there are a wide range of places to eat within a few minutes walking distance of the apartment. All Mehanas serve traditional Bulgarian cuisine and a selection of house wines. Many of the wines are made in the Mehana, and will come straight from the barrel.
BARS The Happy End Bar opposite the gondola station and 5 - 10 minutes from the apartment is usually the first stop for skiers and snowboarders when they come off the slopes. All Mehanas and restaurants serve the usual European beers, as well as the local brews. The most popular (and recommended) is Kamenitza or Zagorka. A pint bottle of Zagorka in one of the traditional Mehanas will cost you around 1.5 Leva (about 50p)
Bulgaria has for a long time been a supplier of full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines to Europe. Inside Bulgaria, there is an even wider variety of wines on offer. Some of the most popular reds are the mellow Melnik and Gumza; rich, dark Mavrud; and the smooth strawberry-flavoured Haskovski Merlot. There are also plenty of white and rose wines available
CASINO Bansko has two Casinos, both within 5 - 10 minutes walk of the apartment. Here you can play all of the usual one-arm bandits, roulette, blackjack, poker etc. The Gold club is on your right hand side as you head down Pirin towards the town square. The other is beside the Strazhite hotel and ten-pin bowling.
TEN PIN BOWLING The ten pin bowling complex also provides various arcade machines, pool tables, a café and bar. Ideal for families and those still suffering from the night before. It is situated next to the Strazhite hotel on the main road (Glazne) coming into Bansko and about 5 minutes walk from the apartment.
SHOPPING For those not content with shopping during the day, you can continue late into the evening, with most shops staying open until around 8pm. You may find that some of the shops close for siesta between 12pm and 3pm. Heading from the apartment down Pirin street, you will pass a varied mix of street cafés, Mehanas, restaurants and many small family run shops selling everything from clothes to furniture, ornaments, souvenirs and of course ski and snow boarding shops, including an official Burton outlet. We found that most of them offer discounts on multiple purchases and sales of up to 50% on boards, skis and equipment are common out of the ski season.
EVENING ENTERTAINMENT During the last World Cup, many tourists and locals gathered in the town square to sit back and relax with a beer while watching the matches on a large screen erected in the town square. The square is also host to various concerts and entertainment through-out the year, including the annual Bansko Jazz festival in August and the Easter Sunday celebrations.
Nightly entertainment can be found in many of the Mehanas and usually consists of live traditional Bulgarian music and dance creating a real party atmosphere. Don’t worry, participation isn’t compulsory, but after a few rakiyas, you will find it hard to resist.
How to get there
Easyjet and Wizz Air now fly in to Sofia. Others may fly to Plovdiv which only increases your transfer time by about an hour by road.
We can organise getting you from the air port to the resort for an additional fee or we've found www.doyourtrip.com who operate an airport/resort transfer service. I emailed them & this is what they said about transferring 3 people with skis Sofia-Bansko: "We have two options in these conditions, * Regular car 85Euros with ski support but less space for luggage * Minibus Mercedes Vito (118Euros) with completely big room * the idea for minivan(105Euros) probably its not worth it -again, little boot space (Opel Zafira, Crysler Voiger). Two days notice, completely enough!" They seem very keen to be helpful. They were cheaper than BulgariaSki.com for van and minibus transfers and plan to organise a forum to help you collaborate with fellow Bansko-skiers/ boarders. BulgariaSki.com can do your lift passes, ski or board hire and ski lessons if you want to book them before you go. On arrival, 'Inter Sport' are also recommended for friendly Ski/Board and boot hire, located on Pirin Street opposite the Happy End Bar just round the corner from the apartment and right near to the gondola. The Bulgarians working there are young, enthusiastic, and speak very good English.

Further details outdoors: SUMMER GUESTS Your brand new fully furnished south-east facing apartment is located on the ground floor overlooking the sun terrace. Everything you could want is within easy walking distance. Summers are hot, the mountains are grand for walking, fishing, canoeing, climbing, white-water rafting and cycling & the Ian Woosnam golf course is just down the road. We are doing a good price for our Summer guests. Walking routes are well marked. There are literally thousands of lakes in the lower hills and the scenery is breathtaking. Horse riding is available in nearby Razlog, as well as Quad biking and Ski-dooing. (that's in the winter?) The Rila Monastery is accessible from Bansko, for a day off and taking in a little history and culture. Check out www.escape2bansko.com/activities/outdoor_pursuits.htm for all the stuff you can do.
WINTER GUESTS For Winter visitors, if there's snow all the way down to the town, which there usually is, we reckon you'll be skiing (or boarding) right up to the door because we are right by the gondola and the end of the Home Run. If you want, you can ski all the way down the mountain to your apartment! Surrounded by the Pirin, Rila and the Rhodope mountains, Bansko has the best snow record and the longest ski season of all Bulgarian resorts. It's a favourite destination for skiers and snowboarders with its long mild winter and stunning scenery. There has been extensive investment over recent years leading to state of the art facilities and opening up an extensive network of runs fed by an equally extensive network of lifts & gondolas. There is skiing for all types of skiers and boarders, off piste and x-country and the Green runs link up nearly all over the resort - so if you have different abilities you can still meet for lunch up on the mountain. The ski school has an excellent reputation, with English speaking instructors. • Highest Lift: 2560m • Km of Piste: 65km • Longest Run: 16km • Cross Country Trails: 9km • Beginner Slopes: 8 (Blue/Green) • Intermediate Slopes: 11 (Red) • Advanced Slopes: 1 (Black) - 2567 metres • Mountain Restaurants: 10 • Lifts: 15 (1 Gondola, 7 High Speed Chairs, 7 Drags) • Night Skiing • Snow-cover: December to May (Forty four Tachnoalpine snow cannons can prolong the season) • Platoto fun park: Boarders (& skiers) can build jumps to suit taste & ability
