SKIING
The Great Skiing & Snowboarding Guide describes Bansko as: "The best-developed ski resort in Eastern Europe, an attractive old town with a modern lift system and hotels of international standard".
With one of the highest peaks in the Balkans, at 2746m above sea level, the ski season runs from mid-December to April. In 2006/7 there were over 65 km of runs divided between 14 pistes, and a total vertical drop of over 1.5Km from the top slopes down to the town. Additional beginner runs are being added for 2007/8. Bansko has invested massive amounts of money into its facilities, and the resort now has state of the art equipment including:
* A fast, 8 person gondola lift to take people up on to the mountain * A variety of 3 and 4 seat high speed lifts (some with protective domes) * 8 Beginners slopes (Blue) * 11 Intermediate slopes (Red) * 1 Advanced slope (Black) * Electronic pass system * 10 mountain restaurants * Night skiing * 30 snow cannons * Excellent ski school with English speaking instructors
More lifts are being added for 2008 winter season.
One of the nicest parts of the skiing is the run down the floodlit road from the top of the ski lift all the way back down the mountain. This provides a wonderful end to a day's skiing.
APRES-SKI There are rumoured to be over 150 taverns ("Mehanas") in Bansko, offering local and international food and drink, and a variety of entertainment including live musicians and singers. A meal with wine or beer typically costs from £6 per head.
There are some nightclubs, a bowling alley, and a skating rink.
How to get there
Direct flights can be booked through any of the following websites-
British Airways (London Heathrow) www.ba.com Bulgaria Air (London Gatwick or Manchester) www.air.bg EasyJet (London Gatwick ) www.easyjet.com New for 2008 season (starts 6th Nov 2007) Ski Charter (London Gatwick or Manchester) www.ski-flights.com Saturdays only, through the ski season Wizz Air (London Luton) www.wizzair.com
Also see www.skyscanner.net for a very handy price/availability guide
There are cheaper options available if you don't mind interesting stopovers, in say Instanbul, Budapest or Warsaw (very cheap, if you can get them). Lufthansa fly from Heathrow to Sofia via Munich/Frankfurt, which can make for a somewhat longer flight (from around 4 hours) but has more convenient flight times than Wizz Air or BA.
There are also indirect flights from Birmingham and other UK Cities. Try www.cheapflights.co.uk.
