The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
The alpine character of the Pirin mountains create excellent skiing conditions for all types of skiers and snowboarders. Bansko is a year round resort, skiing in the winter months, outdoor pursuits in the summer months. Bansko borders the Pirin National Park, which is popular for hiking, horse riding, mountain biking and fishing. There is an abundance of wildlife and a popular destination for bird watching. The Rila Monastery, arguably the most beautiful in Bulgaria, is close by. You can travel on the Narrow Gauge Railway and take the morning train into Velingrad, spend the day shopping and either return by taxi or the evening train.
Bansko area
Bansko is a charming and historic town with a stunning alpine backdrop. A climatic mountain resort, Bansko is known as an alpine skiing, hiking and climbing centre. It combines it's natural beauty and outdoor opportunities with the atmosphere of an ancient Bulgarian town from the tenth century and boasts a wealth of culture and history.
Bansko is the newest ski destination in Bulgaria and has the best snow record and longest ski season, Mid December to early May. There has been an enormous amount of investment in recent years in order to develop the ski facilities, which give easy access to the 65 kilometres of marked ski runs. Ski lessons and ski hire are much cheaper than other european destinations, which makes it ideal for the first time skier, but has something to offer all levels.
Once you are there , you can get around on foot very easy, so you won't need your own transport if you are there purely for the skiing. There are a host of good value restaurants in Bansko and booking isn't generally a problem, apart from busy times such as New Year. Numerous bars play live music.
If you aren't adventerous, there are several 4 and 5 star hotels and spas locally that are open to non-residents for a small charge. You can even have a dip in a hot outdoor pool at the 5*Kempinski Hotel and watch the ski-ier's go past!!
