The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

Bansko provides a superb combination of beautiful natural environment of The Pirin Mountains with state of the art ski lifts and a well planned ski area, whilst Bansko has retained the atmosphere of an ancient Bulgarian small town. Bansko, unlike many of the other Bulgarian ski towns, is not only a resort but also a beautiful historical spot.

Bansko ski resort is situated in South-West Bulgaria at the foot hills of the beautiful Bulgarian mountain Pirin. South of Bansko is where the Pirin National Park is situated. It is included in the UN List of National Parks and Reservations and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park covers over 27,400 hectares and is famous for its lakes, waterfalls, caves, century-old trees and historical sites. The jagged mountains, include 70 glacial lakes scattered throughout them, and are home to hundreds of endemic and rare species.

Bansko generally will offer good skiing from the end of December all the way through to April (sometimes May!). Bansko has the best snow conditions in Bulgaria and additionally has a large number of snow cannons which will guarantee good snow conditions even towards the end of the season. Bansko is the gateway to the Pirin mountain region and is certainly Bulgaria’s up and coming ski resort. It offers an irresistible combination of high mountains and ancient history.

The skiing conditions are excellent with the Pirin Mountain having predominantly Alpine character with 3 peaks towering above 2900m. The slopes offer runs for all types of skier and snowboarder, from novice to expert. There are 14 pistes totalling 65km including a 16km run, plus cross country, off piste and even night skiing down the old mountain road. The mountain is served by a high speed gondola and a network of lifts for complete access.

The Bansko Ski School is excellent with English speaking instructors, and ski classes in 5 difficulty levels. Children above the age of 5 can attend ski school.

The town of Bansko attracts visitors with its 120 cultural monuments. It is famous for its fortified and artistically decorated houses, museums and the Bansko School of Art. A very interesting site is the Holy Trinity Church, with its 30 m high bell-tower and clock, splendid murals and woodcarvings. Every August Bansko hosts the National Jazz Festival.

Bansko / Bojurland Village area

Bansko is the newest and the most rapidly developing ski resorts in Bulgaria. 40 million Euros have been invested in the slopes in the last couple of years with the same amount ear-marked for the next 2-3 years. This has led to the creation of a top rate facility with the best equipment, including a brand new gondola to take you up to the top of the mountains, 40 new snow cannons and a state of the art electronic ski pass system.

These developments, along with the construction of extensive housing and recreational facilities around the gondola (which is on the southwest end of the town by the river), have made Bansko a popular and growing destination. There is a unique 16km uninterrupted ski run, starting at Todorka Peak (2600m above sea level) at the highest point of the ski centre, all the way to the base station of the gondola lift station on the outskirts of town. There is also a top class ski school which caters for all levels of ability and Bansko is also popular with snowboarders who can enjoy the popular halfpipe.

Bansko probably offers the best Après-ski because of its unique combination of a modern mountain resort and a living rustic town with a population of about 10,000. There are almost 100 local taverna's to eat at, and at the end of a day's skiing you can enjoy a drink/meal at the Happy End restaurant by the Gondola lift which turns into a lively night club later on. There are a number of other clubs and bars to soak up the Après ski atmosphere in this otherwise quaint village.

Summer in Bansko

Bansko is not only a great ski resort, but in the summer it is the host of a traditional Summer Jazz Festival, Bulgarian Folk Festival and many other cultural events making this the ideal summer holiday for those who prefer much more than lazing around. During the summer months Bansko is popular with visitors. Opening within a mile of our apartment in Spring/Summer 2007 will be a golf course designed by Ian Woosnam.

Few countries can rival Bulgaria's superb almost untouched mountain scenery. In summer hiking is popular and Bansko's natural beauty and the rich diversity of fauna and flora are a natural asset. Local companies can organise trips in the mountains e.g. white water rafting, canoeing or paragliding but for those who just want to wander around the old town and soak up the national heritage this is a perfect place with museums, local monuments and narrow cobbled streets where you can explore and buy souvenirs from local shops or just relax in one of the local bars or cafe's.

Take a trip on the railway into the mountain villages, relax in the recently renovated mineral thermal pool at Dobrinishte Spa ,visit the local vineyards, the fascinating Rila monastery or Brigitte Bardot's bear sanctuary ( for rescued dancing bears). Take a couple of days before leaving to explore the beautiful city of Sofia. You can even drive to the Greek beaches of Thessaloniki or Thassos island within half a day!
