The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region
The Pirin mountains (the ones you can see from the balcony, just out of town) are excellent in the summer for exploring whether walking, cycling or by car. There are many scenic trails in the hills up to the Virin refuge, although you can even drive or take a cheap taxi to the top once the snows have gone. There are many such mountain refuges in the Pirin mountains, and it is fairly easy to organise many days hiking, even going over to Melnik, some 50kms away. Hot springs,waterfalls, lakes and a bear sanctuary are other highlights of this beautiful region.
However, the skiing and snowboarding are what it is all about in the winter. The lift system in Bansko is probably better than ones I have used anywhere before (and I speak as a formerly addicted to enormous French resorts snowboarder). Fast, new and efficient. At the moment (2007) there are over 20 runs, and even when there isnīt much snow around, the snow cannons keep almost all of them open for use. Again, better than I would have expected in the Alps. Unusually for Balkan resorts the runs are very long. From the top lift back to the resort (without any lifts inbetween) is around 1500m of descent.
Bansko area
Bansko town itself is a traditional and stunning Bulgarian town full of cobbled streets and old buildings. There are many traditional restaurants and bargain prices for food, beer and wine.
Surrounded by The Pirin, The Rila and The Rhodopa moutains. Bansko is a world class mountain resort. Enjoy the fabulous scenic walks and beautiful lakes ' Moratovo Lake' 'Valeavishki Lake' ' Popovo lake'. The town itself has 120 cultural monuments and is home to several museums and permanent ethnographic exhibitions. The Holy Trinity Church with its 30m high bell tower boasts splendid murals and wood carvings. Bansko is not only a ski resort but it is host to the traditional summer Jazz Festival, Bulgarian Folk Festival and numerous other cultural events.

Transfers or car hire can be booked through a number of agencies on the internet. Although I would recommend www.motoroads.com for transfers (approx 150Euros return for a private taxi with 1-3 people) and car hire. The road between Sofia and Bansko has recently been upgraded along almost its full length. Transfers take around 2.5 hours
