The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

The Pirin Mountains have a predominantly Alpine character with 45 peaks all over 2590m high, the highest of which is Vihren at 2914m. Most of the range, which is predominantly granite with beautiful mountain and lake scenery rich in flora and fauna, is protected within the Pirin National Park.

As well as wonderful skiing and snowboarding in winter, walking, mountain biking and water rafting are available. There are waterfalls, caves and historical sites, including the amazing Rila Monastery, waiting to be explored.

Bansko

The Bansko / Glazne area

Winter

The town is situated 925m above sea level and the skiing area is between 1600 – 2600m. The variety of slopes available makes this a skier's and snowboarder's paradise reached by Gondola high in the mountains giving good snow record and long ski season.

• Over 70km of ski and board runs, catering well for all abilities

• 16km uninterrupted run right down to the resort

• off piste opportunities. Deep powder lasts well into the season

• snowboarding park with artificial bumps and jumps

• long ski season from December to April

• cross country skiing, heli-skiing and night skiing

• international skiing and biathlon championships

• very reasonable cost for ski pass

• lessons and ski hire easily available

Personally I have skied in many parts of the Alps and in the USA and we return to Bansko annually with our family. This is an excellent resort for beginners and intermediate skiers and is great value for money!

Summer

Summers are warm and sunny and ideal for a wide range of outdoor activities ther is something for everyone. walking,/fishing/horse riding/mountain biking/white water rafting/lakes/golf/hot mineral springs/narrow gauge railway/monastasteries (including famous Rila Monastery)/historic buildings/Bear Park/ Jazz Festival in August.

Most of the Pirin mountain area is protected within the Pirin National Park. Now designated as a UNESCO world heritage site, Bansko's old quarters consist of a myriad of narrow cobbled streets flanked by timber-framed stone houses. Its modern centre is pedestrianised with a large central square lined with cafes and shops.
