The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

Bansko is a charming traditional Bulgarian town with a modern ski area. The town lies at 925metres in the Pirin Mountains. The ski area is up to 2600metres, which affords it excellent snow cover from mid December to Mid April.
The old and the new lie side by side in Bansko- traditional rustic architecture and farming life- with horse and cart a common sight in the cobbled streets ,alongside the multi million euro ski facilities and five star Kempinski Hotel
The summers are short and hot. The old town buzzes with the international jazz festival in August .Life spills outdoors as the mehanas open their gardens and the pavement cafes in the old square are the place to sip a Bulgarian coffee and watch the world go by...

Excellent ski conditions so far this season, with plenty of fresh powder days; see www.snow-forecast.com for up to date snow reports
updated JAN 2012
The pistes lie between 1000m and 2560m. There are 70km of ski runs , including a 17km run from the top of the mountain right down to the bar in Bansko. Pistes are graded as 30% beginner, 40% intermediate and 30% expert. These are well served with a modern chip operated gondola and 11 lifts, and well maintained with 160 snow cannons covering the pistes. There are snowboard and ski nursery slopes and children's area. and a selection of ski hire shops and ski schools are available locally .All offer great value compared with the familiar alpine resorts. Other snow based activities include snow mobiles, heliskiing, para skiing and ice rink .
Apres ski you are spolied for choice. After a day on the slopes, revitalise using the excellent on site facilities at Bojurland: including sauna, steam room, swimming pool and gym. There is a BBQ, bar and retaurant onsite at Hotel Bojur which provides good value Bulgarian fare, pizzas and pasta.Stroll to the local mehanas (tavernas). These provide excellent hearty rustic food in a cosy atmosphere, often with folk singing and dancing. Skewers cooked over an open grill are a speciality. The local wines are fantastic value with chardonnay and the red melnik and mavrud grape varieties well worth a try. Other European food including pizzas, which can be delivered to the apartment, are also widely available. Avalon Hotel does a great curry night on Thursdays ( booking essential)
The Happy End Bar beside the gondola is a popular place for skiers at the end of the day, as is the lively Base Camp Bar (great for cocktails), which is just around the corner from Bojurland. Harry's bar hosts quizz nights on a Wednesday. There are also a few nightclubs and casinos in the town. Bowling Alleys and an ice rink provide good family entertainment.
Non skiers can visit the museums and the old church in the square, shop for local crafts and antiques, explore the extensive Sunday morning market just moments from the apartment, enjoy coffee in the square or for a special treat spa treatments and afternnoon tea at the Kempinski Hotel. Local towns such as Blagoevgrad and Velingrad can be vsited by bus or train. There are also several mountain villages of interest.
Bansko is also great in the summer when the temperature soars . early July is the Pirin Folk festival. The end of July it it hosts the Bansko mountain bike event. From 8th to the 13th of August is the international jazz festival, with top acts, now in its 15th year. The end of August sees the Opera fest with open air opera in the main square. The cafes along Tsar Simeon are buzzing. You will appreciate being close to the centre of activity in the old town. This is also the best time to trek in the mountains, where there are well marked trails via alpine huts. The chairlift at Dobronishte operates year round and the gondola in Bansko operates to a summer timetable.Take a picnic into the mountains to enjoy beside one of the many glacial lakes for a real treat. You can fish for trout at a mountain mehana and they will cook it fresh for you. Spend a day horse riding in the mountains followed by a traditional Bulgarian lunch in the magical alpine meadow surroundings.Other activities available locally include mountain biking over several marked trails, quad biking, climbing, paintballing, scooter hire, canoeing and white water rafting. There is a top class golf corse designed by Ian Woosnam at Pirin Golf and Country Club around a 10 minute taxi drive from Bansko, which opened in 2009. This is also a reccomended lunch spot and hosts snooker competitions
Take a trip on the railway into the mountain villages, relax in the recently renovated mineral thermal pool at Dobrinishte Spa ,visit the local vineyards at Melknik, the fascinating Rila monastery or Bridgit Bardot's bear sanctuary ( for rescued dancing bears). Many of the nearby towns can be reached by public transport from the local bus station.Take a couple of days before leaving to explore the fascinating city of Sofia. You can even drive to the Greek beaches of Thessaloniki or Thassos island within half a day! Another exciting option is to fly from Istanbul and enjoy a few days in this exotic capital.
We have been visiting Bansko, both winter and summer for several years now. We are keen outdoor activity enthusiasts and have experience of many of the activities on offer; including completing a taverse of the Pirin mountain range, staying in the alpine style huts. ..please ask us for further information.

This apartment is situated at an excellent position. It is just a few minutes away from the center of Bansko, the shops, taverns, ice rink and a bowling room which is excellent if you are travelling with children. There is a hotel bus which takes you to the gondola every morning and takes you back to the apartment in the afternoon. There is also a swimming pool at the complex which is free of charge and could be used from 10 am to 7 pm.However, we recommend this complex and Bansko for both winter and summer vacations. We will go back for sure!!! |
