The Pirin/Rhodope Mountains region

Bansko is a charming traditional Bulgarian town with a modern ski area. The town lies at 925metres in the Pirin Mountains. The ski area is up to 2600metres, which affords it excellent snow cover from mid December to Mid April. The skiing conditions were excellent winter 2007/8 with early snow cover resulting in the gondola opening 2 weeks ealrier than planned, and skiing until the middle of April.

The old and the new lie side by side in Bansko- traditional rustic architecture and farming life- with horse and cart a common sight in the cobbled streets ,alongside the multi million euro ski facilities and five star Kempinski Hotel

The summers are short and hot. The old town buzzes with the international jazz festival in August .Life spill outdoors as the mehanas open their gardens and the pavement cafes in the old square are the place to sip a Bulgarian coffee and watch the world go by...

Bansko / Bojurland Village area

The pistes lie between 1000m and 2560m. There are 70km of ski runs , including a 17km run from the top of the mountain right down to the bar in Bansko. Pistes are graded as 30% beginner, 40% advanced and 30% expert. These are well served with a modern chip operated gondola and 11 lifts, and well maintained with 160 snow cannons covering 100% of the pistes. There is a snowboard park, nursery and children's area. Ski hire ( I reccomend the Saloman rental shop on Pirin Str) and ski schools are available locally ( the English run Method School is excellent for lessons.) All at a fraction of the cost of the familiar alpine resorts. Other snow based activities new for 2008 include snow mobiles, heliskiing and a newly opened ice rink in Pirin St.

Apres ski you are spolied for choice. After a day on the slopes, revitalise using the excellent on site facilities at Bojurland: including sauna, steam room, swimming pool and gym. There is a bar and retaurant on the hotel onsite or stroll to the local mehanas (tavernas),. These provide excellent hearty rustic food in a cosy atmosphere, often with folk singing and dancing. Skewers cooked over an open grill are a speciality. The local wines are fantastic value with chardonnay and the red melnik and mavrud grape varieties well worth a try.

The Happy End Bar beside the gondola is a popular place for skiers at the end of the day, as is the lively Base Camp Bar, which is just around the corner from Bojurland. There are also a couple of a nightclubs in the town for night owls. A Bowling Alley beside the Hotel Strazite at the top of Pirin street provides good family entertainment. The Sir Galahad bar does decent pizzas, if you fancy a change from Bulgarian fare. There is often live music or karaoke on there too.

Non skiers can visit the museums and the old church in the square, shop for local crafts, explore the extensive Sunday morning market moments from the apartment, enjoy coffee in the square or for a special treat spa treatments and afternnoon tea at the Kempinski Hotel.

Bansko is also great in the summer when the temperature soarsto 30 to 35 degrees C, it hosts its own jazz festival and the cafes along Tsar Simeon are buzzing. You will appreciate being close to the centre of activity in the old town. This is also the best time to trek in the mountains, where there are well marked trails via alpine huts. Take a picnic into the mountains to enjoy beside one of the many glacial lakes for a real treat. You can fish for trout beside a mountain mehana and they will cook it fresh for you. Spend a day horse riding in the mountains followed by a traditional Bulgarian lunch in the magical alpine meadow surroundings.Other activities available locally include mountain biking, quad biking, climbing, canoeing and white water rafting.

Take a trip on the railway into the mountain villages, relax in the recently renovated mineral thermal pool at Dobrinishte Spa ,visit the local vineyards at Melknik, the fascinating Rila monastery or Bridgit Bardot's bear sanctuary ( for rescued dancing bears). Take a couple of days before leaving to explore the fascinating city of Sofia. You can even drive to the Greek beaches of Thessaloniki or Thassos island within half a day! Another exciting option is to fly from Istanbul and enjoy a few days in this exotic capital.

We have been visiting Bansko, both winter and summer for several years now. We are keen outdoor activity enthusiasts and have experience of many of the activities on offer; including completing a taverse of the Pirin mountain range. ..please ask us for further information.
